Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.6.0 has been finally released after 4 months of the most active development ever! The switch to git, the new wiki, the new bug-tracking system, this wordpress (350k hits last month!) seem to have attracted a lot of new players and developers. Only the constant stream of new ideas and permanent testing of new features made this shiny release possible! A big Thank You to all participants – players and developers!
The new files are available on our download page. There are binaries of Tiles & Console for Windows & Mac OSX and, of course, the source! If you are new to the game, head over to the preliminary screenshots section to decide. The release notes can be found here.
The online servers (CAO & CDO) are hosting 0.6.0 too now and CDO is back to also hosting early 0.7.0 versions (unreleased, unstable, may cause your computer to explode, etc, etc…).
And a special thanks to doy for handling and coordinating this fine release :)
Update #1: CAO is now hosting 0.6.0 games.
Update #2: SourceForge now has Mac OSX builds uploaded.
Update #3: CDO & Trunk builds updated.

Congratulations. It’s been a long and winding road, but I had a blast playing the 0.6.0 prereleases on CDO.

…Heating oil recoil absorber? Something tells me you chose a codename based on how ridiculous it looks.

Thank you so much for keeping us OS X folks in mind! Having only discovered Stone Soup recently, I am still amazed at the remarkable community and effort supporting this brilliant game. I can’t wait to get started with 0.6!

Haha, I’m from Germany and I really had to laugh about Heizölrückstopabdämpfung, although I don’t realy know what it means :D
“Heizöl” means “heating fuel”, “Rückstoß” is “blowback” (like that blowback you have when firing a gun) and the word “abdämpfung” can roughly be translated with attenuation.
Cool codename, indeed :D

It’s even cooler once you realize it has no letter repetitions

Is there any way to modify the way messages are displayed in Tiles? Messages not clearing every turn will take some getting used to, but it’s probably a good change; everything that happens in one turn appearing on the same line is kind of uncomfortable, though.

Is there anyway to get the windows console version to stretch out when fullscreen like the 0.5.2 dos version does?

(1) Using the Mac tiles version, I’m not quite clear where my /saves files are now and where my morgue files and character dumps are, etc. — anyone? It definitely works — my hall of fame listing populates, and when I restart it shows me my saved character to pull from, but nowhere in my directories can I find these things.
(2) For some strange reason, on my laptop with 0.6.0 I can’t get any highlighted targeting and the character’s point of view — which normally dims what you can’t see — is also not being reflected — so I thought the version was broken — but meanwhile on the 0.6.0 I just downloaded to my iMac, it all works beautifully.
(3) Is there a better place to ask these kinds of questions? I haven’t found newsgroups easy to use or convenient — this is much more so, but I don’t think the Comments space is the best place to ask these questions….

Also, for some reason I can’t get my Mac tiles version to see my options file — I pasted in an init.txt file to the directory but the splash screen says, “(Read options from unknown.)” and my option choices aren’t being reflected….

David: I guess you could file support requests on the tracker, though I can’t guarantee you’ll get replies. Fastest is probably irc (##crawl on freenode), maybe the mailing list.
Saves and morgues at least are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (or similar) on Mac; ~/.crawlrc seems to work for me. Note however that I’m not using the app bundle, so I’m not quite sure what applies there.

Rob, thanks. You da man. I appreciate the help in locating those files. I was able to copy old /scores data that were high scores back into the new /scores file in the Library (yes, Mac here too), and so now I have an updated hall of fame of my best characters.
Any thoughts on where I can put my options file within Finder so that the Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup file in /Applications will see it and use it?

David: Your options file needs to be named “.crawlrc” and copied into your home directory.

I was waiting for so long… for this?
Damn it. It gets even more harder. Unreasonably!
Oneshotted by the centaur with a 2/3 of a HP; or by the pack of gnolls or orcs on 2nd level.
Or this friigin “new” twins and a mummy with a smite! As if Sigmund wasn’t enough.
Thanks but i’m better off playing 0.5.2. version.
Without this new headache.
You ruined the game for me with this damn tweaks. Now dying isn’t fun. It’s just plain frustrating! One thing is when you die of your own stupidity or mistake and completely another thing is when a friggin unkillable mob waiting behind every damn corner on every damn level beginning with first!
P.S. Don’t even start with armor/dodge exp drain thanks to the new mechanics.

I might just being missing it, but where are my bones files to delete? I have been deleting bone files to avoid fighting my ghosts for years, and now I don’t see it. Am I just missing it?

I love the tabs in the tiles version, seriously. I look forward to possibly additional tabs in future versions. More available shops might also be a nice feature. But otherwise keep up the excellent work. :)

Wonderful to see a new version with added content!
But I am wondering if there will be a DOS-ascii version out aswell? I cannot stand tiles. And the worst is how Windows Vista runs the Windows-version. Colors are -horrible-, it does not use unicode, I have to sit 4 inches from the screen (literally) to try to make out what different symbols mean :&
