Making Fire Attractive

Fire magic kills things with fire.

The problem? Other elements are pretty much just as good at killing things, and they give you great stuff on top of that. I can think of two ways to make fire magic more attractive: give it more support spells, or make its conjurations clearly better than other schools. I prefer the latter, since the former just makes it like every other school.

I agree. I suggest looking at the mid-level spells. I think either ozocubu's fridge or freezing cloud should be converted to a fire spell. In exchange, ice can have the (much less useful) fireball. There could also be an offensive fire spell that isn't a conjuration, but rather a charm. Maybe some kind of hot-blood spell that grants the caster might but deals him damage while it is on. — Pedjt 2011-05-04 17:40

The Fire Storm treatment

As Fire Storm is to Ice Storm, other fire spells should be to their ice equivalents. Fire Storm has smite targeting and vortices. A simple way to do this would be to reverse the ranges: currently, Throw Frost and Bolt of Cold have slightly longer ranges than Throw Flame and Bolt of Fire. Throw Flame and Bolt of Fire would have the ranges Throw Frost and Bolt of Cold currently do, and Throw Frost and Bolt of Cold would have the ranges Throw Flame and Bolt of Fire currently do. — minmay 2011-05-04 15:46

Good idea. What about fireball? It was suggested on the forum to make it level 5 and I think it could work. — galehar 2011-05-04 22:31
I've swapped the range like minmay suggested. — galehar 2011-06-28 13:41

Fireball

Currently level 6, delayed 7. Even 4/5 wouldn't be too good. Let's compare the damages for a few chars:

Fireball Bolt of Fire
3d8 (13.5) 6d7 (24)
3d12 (19.5) 6d9 (30)
3d19 (30.0) 6d14 (45)

and the bolt doesn't suffer from the serious downside of being unusable at close range (unless in open) or when surrounded. A very similar spell, Evaporate, is only level 2, requiring lugging potions though. Thus, I think level 4 would fit Fireball well — kilobyte 2011-05-05 00:02

You have a good point, but doesn't Fireball not miss? (The wand does, at least.) I would suggest to be conservative and reduce level to just 5, remembering to evalute this later (and possibly to reduce again). — dpeg 2011-05-05 20:06
If we make Fireball level 5 and restore Bolt of Fire to the book of Flames, then the book would have a smooth progression from level 1 to 6, which I think suits fire elementalists very well. — minmay 2011-05-05 21:32
Indeed, the fact that it never misses is an important factor. I suggest we keep it L6 and increase its damage instead. Regarding the FE book, it's fine to leave bolt of magma in it. It has been significantly boosted. And since IE has throw icicle, it makes sense for FE to have bolt of magma to deal with rF+ enemies. — galehar 2011-06-28 13:41
I'm not against Bolt of Magma in the FE book because it's weak. I'm against it because it's an earth spell, which really hurts the background's distinction (though this is a lot better now that Conjurations[fire+earth] is gone). — minmay 2011-06-28 16:43
