Hi Crawlers! Here are the latest and greatest goodies from trunk.
- The Orcish Mines are now two levels, and only spawn plain orcs as part of bands; gold generation is doubled to account for the shorter branch.
- The Elven Halls now contains elementals and dancing weapons (in addition to the ones normally found in the Hall of Blades).
- All enemies, including uniques, now have (at least slightly) randomised HP.
- You can no longer gain breath abilities as mutations; only draconians and nagas have access to them.
- Xom’s random spell set has been adjusted slightly.
- The penalties for amulets of dismissal and regeneration have been adjusted:
- Wearing an amulet of dismissal subjects the player to vertigo for a few turns, reducing accuracy, EV, and spell success.
- The amulet of regeneration no longer rots on removal; instead you need to be at full health at least once while wearing it for it to have an effect.
- The amulet of stasis has been replaced by the amulet of reflection, which grants a few points of SH that act as a shield of reflection. The Brooch of Shielding is now a +8 amulet of reflection.
- Chaos champions lose Chaotic Mirror and instead gain Call of Chaos, an ability which applies (usually) positive status effects to allies in its line of sight. Mnoleg also gains this spell.
- Deep elf mages are now HD 9 and absorb the spells from the deep elf conjurer and summoner into some of their own spell sets.
- New enemies:
- Deep elf archers, who have attained a notable level of skill in both archery and hexes.
- Deep elf elementalists, with mastery of all of the elemental schools and the noted ability to turn rock into earth elementals to dig out entrenched foes.
- Deep elf fighters, conjurers, priests (but not high priests), and summoners have all been removed.

Usually I like every change, but “All enemies, including uniques, now have (at least slightly) randomised HP” is a freaking terrible idea.
Orc randomised HP was already a huge frustration.

I don’t really see anything to complain about in these changes. They make the game more tense and exciting. I certainly don’t imagine any “huge frustration” from randomized HP, I’m just confused because I seem to remember randomized speeds being removed from some monsters a while ago.
The only change in recent memory that I miss is monster Animate Dead removal. in my experience this spell led to some of the most tense and unexpected tactical turns in my games.
Presumably someone on the Tavern wrote up a proof of how “optimal play” made it’s inclusion irrelevant or tedious.

Ok, good to see amulet of stasis gone. It was one of those items that mostly took inventory space since it could be useful, but I mostly forgot to use. Can’t see how reflection is a substitute though, to me it seems stasis could have been melded with clarity since they both block status effects. Clarity is only useful situationally or with certain builds.

With the new god I find that I’d like to be able to quiver a wand so I can just us the (f)ire command instead of e(V)oking and then picking the wand. Can we get this as an option?

Guys,what are you doing to the game?
Can’t you just make two game options?
1)Crawl classic
2)Crawl Tournament
In the first mode,no stuff would be deleted but new stuff added.
Believe it or not,but people like variety.
Its no good to strip of everything for the sake of efficiency.
Hugely dissapointed to the direction that this wonderful game is taking.Still lurking around for positive changes though.

It’s could be good to carefully read changelog, there a small amount of objects removed. A lot balanced or replaced.
People love variety, but DCSS is VERY variety. And a lot of mecanisms are new. And you have a new god…
Player are really always complaining…

Luckily old versions are not deleted and are freely available for you to play any time. No one will ever like every change made to the game, but in my mind the improvements vastly, vastly outweigh any negatives that are introduced. Overall I like the direction of Crawl development.

Well, since the changes to coding still makes the game unplayable on some window versions still clinging to 0.16-a0-2097 :(

Short Orcs means fewer followers for Beoghites and more randomized health of the ones who do! Ah well, should still be fine/fun.
I’m looking forward to the .18 tournament!

Why is shortening Orc to 2 levels considered a good idea?
