dpeg: I suggest to have a miscellaneous item (which could easily be called “rod of divination”, the name is good) providing Magic Mapping, Detect Monsters, Detect Secrets (the latter would find traps, secret doors, and hidden items). The mechanic should not be that of current rods (recharging over time), of course. Instead, the rod should have charges and using one of those spells from it would reduce charges permanently (i.e. like a wand). Evocations should either increase spell power and/or reduce charge cost. The rod could be recharged via scroll.
OG17: I like that idea, but it shouldn't be called a rod if it doesn't work like one. “Stone of divination,” maybe?
Though I'm a bit wary of having detect traps, doors, and items be a single usage. And would this be a full-map effect with evo-based success, or automatic succes in an evo-based radius? That is, there's already an orb that has an evo-based mapping effect. Also, I'd get rid of the recharging mechanic entirely, as the item'd be used to reveal every branch end and tomb level by deep dwarves (and players who have scrolls to spare) - absolutely finite charges are a lot better, I think, and make the effects that much more valuable.
KiloByte: Instead of adding a new item type, what about simply turning the spells into two wands? (Magic Mapping works well enough as a scroll).
I like the idea of a rod, so here's a new proposal for the item, to make it more roddy: rods of divination have exactly one type (mapping, items, creatures) and come with a number of charges. If you wield the rod, then (a) it will locally perform its function (map, find items, find creatures) and (b) continuously lose charges. Evocations increases the search range. There should totally be a divination rod that finds water and metal, by the way. — dpeg 2010-07-09 17:45
Why does this need to called a rod? I mean sure, divining rod, whatever, but that's no reason to reuse a term that already has a well-defined usage; rods are evocable items that recharge over time. This “rod” has nothing in common with that; it might as well be labelled “scroll” or “potion.” That said, I think it's an interesting mechanic - I think it'd be fitting to have it be a magical “torch,” myself. — OG17 2010-07-09 18:37
