Summary | 0005504: When I should die, the game instead crashes. | ||||||||||||
Description |
I just recently downloaded the newest version of Crawl, and have been having issues with the game. At first the problem was that the game would not run and would crash instantly. When I tried to play in console mode, it said it couldn't find the morgue and save folders, so I changed the paths in the init file to point to the folders after remaking them. This got the game to run, but now whenever I should die and a new file should be made in the morgue folder, it crashes the game instead. What should I do? I'm operating the game on Windows XP and Windows 7. |

Permission issue? What folder was game unzipped? |

It was unzipped into a folder on my flash drive titled Rougelikes. |

I think the console Crawl actually quits after tutorial ending/death/victory by default (unlike tiles version). Try this - near the beginning of init.txt file you should find this line: # restart_after_game = false Change it to: restart_after_game = true |

I'm not using the console version, but I'll try it and post back if it doesn't work. |

Nope, still happening. Oddly enough it had said # restart_after_game = true originally, and I just had to delete the # sign. |

If you run the tiles crawl from the command line, you should get some kind of error message in the console window when it crashes. Could you do so and paste that? |

If the morgue dir cannot be created, the game exits with an error at start. If it does exist but writing a file there fails, the game displays a non-fatal error and continues with the death. I don't see where a crash could come from. So if you could get the error message, it'd be great. |

I'm not sure what running tiles from the command line means, so if you could explain how to do that I'll try it. I used the in game character dump button and it dumped the information perfectly fine. However, I later died and it still closed out with the save file up same as last time. I'm just not sure what to do. There's no error message or anything, it just exits out the moment it should give me the "you have died" message and show me my inventory. |

I think I had this issue, which was resolved by setting the crawl_dir as well as the morgue_dir/save_dir at galehar's suggestion. https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3899 [^] |

Thanks for the pointer rchandra, looks like it's working now. |

You never should need to mess with such config options unless you're setting up a shared server/etc. Not working out of the box for regular use is not acceptable. However, I cannot seem to reproduce this problem in any way -- it works for me at least on Win2k, XP, Vista, 7/32, 7/64 and 8-consumer-preview/64, both for the installer and zipped versions, assuming the latter are unpacked to a directory I have write permissions to. So something is badly amiss... |
