Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

Although the central place for design discussion is ##crawl-dev on freenode, some may find it helpful to discuss requests and suggestions here first.

Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

I thought it might be neat to show the contributions that this forum has made to the game. NOTE: This is not the place to talk about ideas you think should, or are about to, make it into the game. Devs, you could also note ideas that maybe weren't suggested here per se, but were inspired by some of the discussion here.

So, to kick it off, the ones I'm aware of:

- Monks can now choose quarterstaves (curio)
- name of scroll is now displayed in the reading message (danr)
- Blank scrolls have been removed (minmay)
- Kobold and Halfling magic school aptitudes differentiated more (RangerC)
- ability to read spellbooks that are on the floor (smock)
- new ranged monster AI (galehar)

Also, was the new obsidian axe fixedart inspired by my thread on demon axes (I saw text describing it as a "demon axe" in the RSS feed).

This thread has two purposes:
- To keep track of the contributions coming from this forum
- To be a useful reference for those forum members wanting to get a sense of what kinds of proposals might be likely to succeed.

On that last point, I think the single biggest point I would note is: Keep it simple. The more complex or wide-reaching the proposal, the less likely it will happen. And I think the curve of likelihood drops of VERY quickly with complexity. I think big scope changes only happen when the devs decide to do it after extensive deliberations among themselves.

Re: Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

I can think of one more change that has its origin here, even though it wasn't a suggestion from a member. I was reading a post from a crawler advising another to duck behind a corner when meeting ranged attackers. I had read this advice too many times already. Result: new ranged AI :D

The new AI is so much fun.

Also, it seems that you can now read spellbooks from the floor. I made this complaint, but a big thanks to whoever coded it up. It's really quite swell!

I noticed that in the latest trunk builds, classes are now divided by type (mages, fighters, battlemages, zealots, misc) as was discussed in a thread here.

The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Again, no offence intended, I'm just going to prune out a bunch of off-topic stuff...

None of my suggestions have made it in yet?
Not even the homonculus?
Or phase bats?

There are phase bats in trunk. I saw them in a vault yesterday (with a large number of other amusing bat types).

Varkarrus FTW :)

Ogres that are actually usable PCs? (After a long, long time...)

Do whips get a damage bonus versus bats?

Re: Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

There have been numerous spell/book tweaks that I have seen suggested followed by a developer posting implemented.

Re: Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

I'd go so far as to say this thread isn't really needed, at least not anymore. Maybe initially it was effective to prove that the Tavern is a useful resource, but most of the developers are very active here, and whether an idea is suggested in the Tavern or on IRC, if it's a good idea it gets implemented, often very quickly.

A recent example: https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2406

Suggested, acknowledged, implemented, in a space of under three hours - these kind of little tweaks and fixes happen often enough that keeping a separate thread to track them all is kind of fighting a losing battle. The bug report, commit log, or change log will usually link to the forum thread if that's where it came from, and major ideas or contributions always get credited by name. So in my opinion, unsticky this thread, it's just one more place to track things when so much information is already spread out over too many different resources! ;)

Re: Tavern ideas that have made it into the game

I think mumra is right.

However, with the more elaborate planning, I note a tendency to set up a thread but not keeping it alive. The latter means to discuss until there's a reasonable plan and then to add it to the wiki. This is necessarily a longer process than for interface improvements, of course.

The most recent victim was the Hell Effects thread. If a proposal emerges, I am sure a coder will take over.
