? altars in trunk!

Just stumbled across one of these on D2 as a MfAK, which of course didn't end well, but I had to try it.

How does this work? Totally random god selection and * piety immediately? I'm really curious to see how these will be utilized. I know for me personally, I'll always give it a shot, and just quit if it doesn't work out. Do monks start at *** piety?

Re: ? altars in trunk!

Cant answer on what happens if a Monk joins at one of these altars.

But yes, otherwise. Random god, some starting piety. Seems to be a few checks to make sure you dont get an unworshippable god (for your species)

Do these only generate in some games? Two characters in a row haven't seen one generate, and I just now downloaded the newest trunk.

There's a 50% chance of getting it on D:2 or D:3 (equal chance of being on either).

Re: ? altars in trunk!

I didn't see it on either. It's in the new trunk over on crawl.develz.org/trunk? I'm using windows tiles.

So am I correct in assuming it is guaranteed to generate, or is it only 75% likely to generate?

edit: OK, 3 in a row now, no fancy random altar. Playing version crawl_tiles-0.17-a0-1337-ge651487. As I always do, I just extracted the zip over my existing crawl install and replaced files/folders.

As I understand from wheals' post it's 50% likely to generate and if it was generated it can be on D:2 or D:3 with equal chance. So it's not very unusual if you don't get it 3 times in a row.
Edit: just checked, this commit isn't listed here yet.

Re: ? altars in trunk!

Ah, I read that as a 50% chance to generate in d2, and if it doesn't generate there, it shows up in d3, thus the other 50%.
I also thought maybe it had a 50% chance to generate on D2, then a seperate 50% chance on d3, meaning a 75% chance total.
I hadn't considered a 50% chance of generation at all, with equal odds of generation on D2 and D3.

Language is imprecise sometimes, isn't it

Re: ? altars in trunk!

I assume that if this makes it to stable, the generation chance will be reduced?

Re: ? altars in trunk!

What a likeable feature. I tried it with a Monk and it starts at ** piety, no idea if it's partway along to *** but it doesn't really matter, a D2 altar is great anyway. My GrMo of Kiku shall now proceed.

edit - *** came really soon.
