Ascii or tiles?

As the title says.
Personally I prefer Ascii, for two reasons.
1)It is l33t!I mean, come on,how many games are there which can be played in a dos box and are actually fun?!
2)The game is more clearer.I played tiles once or twice. For example, how can you differ between an orc and an orc warrior?Cosmetically, they look near each other.

Whenever the full-body chain mail isn't enough to tell the difference between a naked pink Orc and an Orc Warrior, I read a Scroll of Fog and determine which is which by checking which Orc causes a greater displacement of air(the subtle currents are made visible by the fog), since Warriors have a greater overall volume and therefore displace more vapor.

Re: Ascii or tiles?

I play Tiles, since it is generally easier to look at a picture and at least have a semblance of what it is I might be looking at, then a letter which I have to memorize to know what it represents. I also have good eyesight though so I can see most little tile differences.

While I'm sure I could get used to differentiating creatures by the colors of their glyphs, I like being able to see that the [ over there is chain mail and the ) is a falchion without having to press a key. It's also nice to be able to see which creatures are wielding which weapons, so I know who to prioritize or that I'm not fighting one-on-one in a corridor.

lmao

...[ over there is chain mail and the ) is a falchion without having to press a key.

In that point tiles seems to be better, altough personally it never bothered me to press the examine key and take a quick look.
The same applies for monster gear, and cmon, most of the time its not THAT important if the orc warrior is wielding a great mace or not, because at the time when you met so many of them that repeatedly pressing examine could become tedious, you dont need to anymore because youre strong enough to take 'em out no matter what

oh yeah? well 'tiles' contains 'lest', which is a word pretty much only used in 'lest we forget', which in turn is only used to refer to world war I, meaning that tiles are as bad as a world war

Yeah but console is an anagram of ole' con which means you're being swindled with an old trick by playing it

well "tiles" is an anagram of "lites", which means tiles players are too stupid to spell "lights" correctly. jesus crist guys that's 3rd grade material

yeah well "con" means "against" so console is opposed to the bottoms of people's feet, which is a pretty harsh position to take

Re: Ascii or tiles?

turn around "tiles" and you've got "selit", which is pretty appropriate considering that all the tiles devs are trying to do is sell it (meaning crawl, a very sophisticated and aesthetically flawless game) to the uneducated masses

Re: Ascii or tiles?

turn around console and you get elosnoc, which is gibberish, meaning that the devs favoring console are too lazy to come up with a name that actually makes sense both ways
also selit is an archaic way of spelling salad which means tiles devs are encouraging players to eat salad which is most commendable

Inspired by this thread I tried playing local console yesterday. It started in such a small window that I felt too lazy about exploring options guide and just quit. If it cannot look good with default settings, I am happily back to tiles.

DCSS is not responsible for how you set up your console. Stuff like letter size and font aren't even in the DCSS options.

version doesnt matter.
richt click on the console window, then go to properties and then to font.choose the size you want.for increased coolness, choose raster fonts with 10*18 size

also, the pace of playing in console is ALOT faster.(meaning you can die faster and so save time)

Tiles is an enjoyable game of adventuring and fighting monsters. Console is THE ASSASSINATION OF THE WRITTEN LANGUAGE. How could anyone want that.

I generally prefer to use tiles. I lack the cognitive ability to memorize what all the various glyphs mean, but can usually get the gist of it from the tiles. Of course, there are instances where the same tile is used for different entities, but I still prefer it.
