The likelihood of repetition will relate to the number of possible combinations of letters and the number of times that combinations are generated. In fact, if there were limited possibilities and many instances and never any repetition we might become suspicious that the process was non-random. We should probably expect some re-occurrence of combinations.

Aside from that, my (limited) understanding of how computers generate random numbers suggests that they could never be described as "truly" random.

Maybe it uses a generation algorithm like the one used by apg tool? But it's less sophisticated, I think: there are far too many repeatitions in the current names.
_

Completely not by the way, guys,
if you need a nice easy-to-remember password, I do recommend using those "APG online" tools or getting it for your Linux distro.
I managed to remember a password generated with it after five or four consecutive typings in one day and one or two in the next one, which is actually nice, and these passwords are easy to type on a screen keyboard!
However, they are not as strong as these Completely Random Passwords,
so don't use them for your sysadmin login. ;)

These ones seem to be working:

[version 2, non-English GUI] http://www.fransonline.nl/apg-2.2.0/php/apgonline/

I'm afraid that I don't get the joke or reference.

It's just that it sounds like a real albeit f/sf-y name, not a random string of letters like most scroll names do. Though the fact that it's been generated before suggests that it's been deliberately planted and is indeed a reference to something, though what I could not say.

I've had that happen. It's really annoying when you get stuck in someplace like that as a ogre or troll.

Naga Abyssal Knight approaches salamander in lava, constricts him, hits him hard with a battleaxe of distortion, blinks him over lava and comes along for the ride. Note that I am not levitating, but still constricting him so I don't die. I again hit him hard, the salamander dies, and there I am. Suspended over lava and alive and kicking, without levitating or flying.

Just for the sake of it:

  Code:
Shiv, who poured the harvest and made the winds to blow,
Sitting at the doorways of a day of long ago,
Gave to each his portion, food and toil and fate,
From the King upon the guddee to the Beggar at the gate.

All things made he--Shiva the Preserver.
    Mahadeo!  Mahadeo!  He made all,--
Thorn for the camel, fodder for the kine,
And mother's heart for sleepy head, O little son of mine!

Wheat he gave to rich folk, millet to the poor,
Broken scraps for holy men that beg from door to door;
Battle to the tiger, carrion to the kite,
And rags and bones to wicked wolves without the wall at night.
Naught he found too lofty, none he saw too low--
Parbati beside him watched them come and go;
Thought to cheat her husband, turning Shiv to jest--
Stole the little grasshopper and hid it in her breast.

So she tricked him, Shiva the Preserver.
    Mahadeo!  Mahadeo!  Turn and see.
Tall are the camels, heavy are the kine,
But this was Least of Little Things, O little son of mine!

When the dole was ended, laughingly she said,
Master, of a million mouths, is not one unfed?"
Laughing, Shiv made answer, "All have had their part,
Even he, the little one, hidden 'neath thy heart."
From her breast she plucked it, Parbati the thief,
Saw the Least of Little Things gnawed a new-grown leaf!
Saw and feared and wondered, making prayer to Shiv,
Who hath surely given meat to all that live.

All things made he--Shiva the Preserver.
    Mahadeo!  Mahadeo!  He made all,--
Thorn for the camel, fodder for the kine,
And mother's heart for sleepy head, O little son of mine!

...so wear and amulet of preservation next time!

Hmm, now this is odd indeed. I tried to fire an orb of destruction at a lava worm in Hell, but apparently the fog or it submerging screwed up the targeting and left it orbiting in a circle. After I killed the lava worm though, it veered off and dissipated  . Wish I left that worm alive so I could have my very own one planet solar system in Crawl!

Size kinda sucks, blame those gif creator sites and their 450px limit assholery.

That's the creepiest room I've ever encountered in crawl.

But I guess maybe it's just supposed to be a butcher shop?

If minotaurs weren't a player race, it would feel less creepy.

Change beef jerky to mutton jerky and change the minotaur corpses to sheep corpses, and the creep factor goes away.

Unless it's meant to be creepy like that.

Yeah, I had an overexposure to Crawl, lost one one my long-running characters through a stupid mistake, and had to play other things for a while. Funny thing is, I still continued to keep video-game masochism in my diet with the wonderful Dark Souls; and then me and my mates suddenly had a conversation about the potential real-life benefits of Alistair's Intoxication the other day, and suddenly I'm booting up Crawl again yesterday.

I've skipped over 0.9 and will wait to 0.10 before updating, still playing 0.8 myself. (Well, saves me having to update the tiles again with Drakahn to replace Draconians!)

Laughed a bit reading over all the comments about Dwarves leaving. I too feel the better approach would be to modify rather than remove; alot of the similar races could be made different if melee was made more feature-loaded, since Crawl is very magic focused, but... as long as these Forge Dwarves or whatnot make their way in instead I've no problems in the end. I certainly can see the need to distance from Tolkien; but not the abject hate of it; what's wrong with just going 'Our Dwarves are different?'.

Anyway, off-topic, ho! It's nice to be back. I've probably posted this one before somewhere, but to stay on topic I have no other funnies right now:
