mind you, i still dont like the idea because it would actually be ridiculously overpowered. pale draconian is the best colour solely because it has this as its breath weapon, and cloak of the thief is the best artefact in the game solely because it has a similar ability that is significantly weaker. even if this spell were level 8, it would probably be the second best spell in the game that is above level 6, and thats only because the first best level >6 spell in the game makes you literally invincible.

Whats the deal with them stopping me climbing the stairs, will that happen every turn or do I have a chance to actually get up the stairs sometimes?

You have the same chance of climbing the stairs as you would have of moving away from them, that being:
  Code:
(4+n)d(8+str/4) >= 5d(8+HD/4)

where "n" is the number of attempts you've made to escape (Including this one), and HD is the hit dice of the creature constricting you.
However, at normal speed you take 16 aut to actually leave the level, and you only get constriction immunity for 10 aut after breaking constriction. This means that if you break constriction by ascending stairs...you will almost certainly just get constricted again before you actually make it up the stairs, so not only will you waste a turn, the value of "n" will go down to 0 again and make it harder to escape...

uh, you should definitely be using the heaviest plate you can find. ring mail only provides 24% GDR, whereas normal plate is 39%, up to 48% with crystal plate. whatever the +x modifier is is going to be pretty much worthless next to 15% extra flat damage reduction.
This is some of the worst advice I've ever seen on this forum, and that's saying something. First of all, GDR only works on melee attacks, which tend to be the least dangerous kind of attacks. Second, the amount of damage it takes off is capped at AC/2, so the "+x modifier" is needed for it to work at all.

When choosing armour I almost ignore GDR. It means very little.

I can: every character that stabs things. Before the change, enchanters started every game by training Stabbing exclusively - the returns provided by stealth and short blades were absolutely pathetic by comparison. Now, to get the same effect, they have to train two skills, neither of which does much else at that point in the game. Certainly a lot of characters get all three skills eventually, but at a time in the game where it is enormously less important (70% of deaths occur before d:5).
Then again since you seem to think you're better than fucking elliptic I'm pretty sure I'm wasting my time.

Of curse you'll get bored, when you know what's dangerous and avoid it entirely. You need to challenge those uniques that have a high chance to kill you(but usually not unreasonably high, it's just a chance) you need to take a step into the vault on elf:3 early on or something(..or not, because it'll probably kill you), things like that. Dying this way is frustrating but it's thrilling and keeps me not bored and wanting to play more. And this way games usually end early :)
I think that if good players have to play badly in order to enjoy the game, there is something wrong with the game.

Because if not, you had the opportunity to learn what are probably the two best necromancy spells in the game (Death's Door and Borgnjor's Revivification), and certainly the best level 7+ spells in the game, and instead you chose to learn what is the worst necromancy spell in the game (and possibly the worst spell in the game, period).

Well the thing is, as multiple people have explained, it doesn't give you a slight edge, it gives you a negative edge. To borrow an analogy from the late ebarrett: it's like hitting your own dick with a hammer. The devteam doesn't need to nerf hitting your own dick with a hammer by adding a dick-avoiding apparatus to the hammer. It's already suboptimal, and blatantly obviously so at that.

mumra's suggestion would make ninjaing the orb the easiest it has been since before the haste nerf, so it's like you're also making the hammer give you free money every time you touch it.
