As it currently stands, spells like firestorm provide no warning if you attempt to cast them at a location that places you within their potential radius. I blew myself up in Tomb this way a few days ago, in fact. I don't know that this necessarily needs to be changed; perhaps no warning should be given. However, to me, this seems a bit like "player vs. interface", which I thought was something that Crawl discouraged.
More importantly, though, this is something that the game sends mixed messages about. "Bouncy" spells will give you a warning if you are likely to catch yourself with the ricochet. Yet in most cases, these are far less likely to kill you than Firestorm, Icestorm, etc. IMHO, you should either be warned for both cases or for neither.
Marginally related, I noticed that my cause of death was "bad targetting". In older versions, this was "bad targeting". According to the OED, at least, the new spelling is incorrect ;) |
