Summary 0001344: Provide a way to view unarmed damage
Description Inspired by http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.roguelike.misc/browse_thread/thread/5424e52f56afc79e# [^]

Currently there's completely no way to determine your Unarmed to-hit, base damage and attack speed. Unless you count using spoilers. Combat forms (transmutations) magnify the issue.

One way could be "i-". First for inventory, second similar to how hyphen (-) allows you to wield nothing. I'm not convinced this is the best way to go, though.

Why specifically for unarmed? Weapon effectiveness is, at best, no less of a question mark, as shown by the constant "is x better than y with z skill?" and "how much x skill should I have to use y?" questions. A character's current adjusted hit, damage, and delay should be shown on item descriptions, if not also the % screen (for unarmed, if nothing else) or something more visible - something so integral to character success should certainly be displayed somewhere. This can include disclaimer text like "With your current attributes, equipment, statuses, and skills, this weapon does blah" to make it clear that the stats fluctuate with armor, buffs, and a hundred other things, if you like, but the fact that it's so complicated is in itself reasoning for why a display is needed.

The reason such elaborate information isn't shown is because its a) complicated, b) most players aren't interested in it necessarily and c) such definitive information is clearly a spoiler.

Some basic information might be appropriate, but I don't think you'll ever see current to-hit / dmg / attack speed values. You MIGHT get base values, but that's it. Regarding transmutations, their bonuses to combat effectiveness are a reflection of their spell power, this is transparent enough for most players, I think. If you're more interested in the exact values, reading the source is your (only) best route.

The reason "such elaborate information" isn't provided is because Unarmed Combat is not an item. This is why it's not possible to examine Unarmed Combat with i-letter combination. All weapons can be examined to see their *base* damage, toHit and attack speed. I'm not suggesting to give Unarmed special treatment - just bring its documentation level up to that of other weapons.

I've included this suggestion (thanks!) in the new wiki page at https://crawl.develz.org/wiki/doku.php?id=dcss:brainstorm:interface:combat_info [^] More input there is very welcome.

Closing.
