Henzell says...

(ranged weapons; +3 acc / 16 dam / 1.9 base delay / 1.0 min delay). Top-tier one-handed range weapon, rethemed from {hand crossbow}s in 0.31. Twice as noisy as other ranged weapons and often creates smoke when fired. Boom! (Not technically a gun.)
