Unfortunately, CDO is no longer able to handle the load of WebTiles games and there has been a lot of lag recently. Everybody will be able to finish their games, but new character creation has been disabled – for now. I plan to migrate to a new server during this year (hopefully in time for the autumn tourney) and there may be the possibility to reactivate WebTiles then. DGL games will continue to work.

Anyone willing to host a WebTiles server, especially in Europe, please let us know in The Tavern. For now there are WebTiles servers available in the US.

Thank you all for participating!

Browser sizes no longer matter!

Browser versions don’t matter either anymore!

Sprint and Tutorial available now, too!

The Mini-Map is shown and working now, alas it cannot be used yet to initiate a travel. During login you have the choice to stay logged in via cookies. Also, spectators no longer need to resize their browser when watching someone. The game always adjusts to the browser size of the player and spectator independently. Additionally, the websocket protocol was updated to support Firefox 4, 5 and 6.

And last but not least, the game-mode Sprint and the Tutorial are now playable via WebTiles, too!

I was told there are more features in the making – so stay tuned! Also, webtiles code has been merged into the official master branch.

Head over to its website and give it a try!

I’m happy to announce that we can now offer an online version of “Tiles”!

We call it WebTiles for now and it serves version 0.8 of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Right in time for the unofficial tournament!

Edlothiol announced his great idea with working code on the mailing-list a few weeks back, and even though it’s still beta-quality in the aspects of features (mini-map missing, inventory-tab, etc), it’s fully playable and there have even been the first 4 wins by players testing it!

There is a slight draw-back: It needs a fairly modern browser which supports a technology called WebSockets:

Chrome 6 or higher

Safari 5 or higher

Opera 11 or higher (enable WebSockets in opera:config#Enable WebSockets)

Firefox 4 or higher (disable network.websocket.override-security-block in about:config)

WebTiles are actively being developed! If you’d like to participate, head over to edlothiol’s git-repository and have a look. If you’d like to play, head over to the WebTiles now and either use your login from CDO or create a new login.

Additionally, Wensley practiced his awesome AJAX skills and practically over night created an Online Player Status website. It gives a detailed list about who is playing online – in both, the Console/DGL version and the WebTiles version, on CAO and CDO.

Both, WebTiles and the Online Player Status page, are now linked from the front-page of our website for your convenience.

I’d also like to pay thankful credit to the Tornado Web Server, the open-source python library used to create and manage the websocket for WebTiles, and especially Ben Darnell, who helped edlothiol and me very quickly when we ran into trouble.

Note: CAO games are still missing from the status page, but should show up sometime during the weekend.

As some of you may have noticed, there were some down-times of CAO and CDO recently, and I’d like to keep everyone posted.

CAO, located in North America, now also allows to play the unstable development version of Stone Soup – with all the additional features like save-game backups for reporting, removing save-games, resetting config-files. With CDO being located in Europe, this should make playing the development version much smoother for Crawlers living in the Americas. While Greensnark was at it, he also installed a new branch called EroCrawl, maintained by Eronarn, presenting two new races called Lava Orcs & Octopodes and square LOS, which he would like to have included in the main branch of Stone Soup one day.

A week ago the server hosting CDO & its services has moved to a new Server Hosting Company (within Germany again). The website and all services were down for 3 days while I moved everything. It’s a much stronger & bigger machine now and should withstand future incidents much easier. Additionally crawl.develz.org is now fully reachable via IPv6.

Due to the upcoming release CDO and the Windows builds will now focus on providing the pre-release version of Stone Soup 0.8 for a while by updating daily. Please, help us iron out as many bugs as possible!

Thank you very much, Greensnark, for all the work you did to upgrade CAO!

As recently announced the desire for a forum dedicated to Stone Soup has grown stronger. Luckily djnrempel aka danr took matters into his hand and set up a forum at freeforums.org. Their services are nice and easy to use but unfortunately there have been a few complaints about speed, privacy, advertisement and the fact that exporting the database for backups is not so free.

Danr contacted me and, due to the heavy snow keeping me away from work, I just finished to set up a truly free forum on CDO. Danr will do all the administrative work and I will deal with code changes and updates.

Proud to present: The Tavern

The feature I’m especially fond of is the fact that the user database is taken from our Mantis Bug Tracking System.

- If you have an existing account in Mantis the Tavern account will be automatically created on your first login to the forum. There you can update your profile with additional information if you like.
- If you don’t have an account in Mantis yet, create one, confirm the link in the email and you can set your password then. Once that’s done, click on the Tavern link and log into the forum.

One important thing: If you ever need to reset your password, you need to do that in Mantis, too.

Enough of this techno-babble…

The Doors to The Tavern are open! Join and have a pleasant stay!

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.6.0 has been finally released after 4 months of the most active development ever! The switch to git, the new wiki, the new bug-tracking system, this wordpress (350k hits last month!) seem to have attracted a lot of new players and developers. Only the constant stream of new ideas and permanent testing of new features made this shiny release possible! A big Thank You to all participants – players and developers!

The new files are available on our download page. There are binaries of Tiles & Console for Windows & Mac OSX and, of course, the source! If you are new to the game, head over to the preliminary screenshots section to decide. The release notes can be found here.

The online servers (CAO & CDO) are hosting 0.6.0 too now and CDO is back to also hosting early 0.7.0 versions (unreleased, unstable, may cause your computer to explode, etc, etc…).

And a special thanks to doy for handling and coordinating this fine release :)

Update #1: CAO is now hosting 0.6.0 games.
Update #2: SourceForge now has Mac OSX builds uploaded.
Update #3: CDO & Trunk builds updated.

We were quite surprised when the unexpected announcement for Dungeon Sprint showed up on our mailing list a few days ago! It got installed on CDO early and it was extremely well-received! It sends you off into the dungeon and the big show starts immediately – no waiting, no resting – immediate death or victory in an intriguing level map! But, let’s see what the author himself has to say about it:

“Dungeon Sprint” is a twist on Dungeon Crawl: only one dungeon level is generated, but it’s..

A mostly-fixed (i.e., mostly non-random), very difficult level; the player gains experience and trains skills at 27 times the normal rate; and the player gains piety at 9 times the normal rate. Some problematic features in Crawl such as certain teleportation effects and the Portal spell are also disabled in Sprint. You can play Dungeon Sprint on the server crawl.develz.org (telnet in, port 345), and the source code is also available online in case you want to look at it or change it yourself. I think the best way to understand Sprint is to play at least a few games of it, so you can get a sense of what’s fun about it.

There’s something called Tomb of Horrors, which was an adventure from the 1970s for Dungeons and Dragons. I don’t really care at all about Dungeons and Dragons but Tomb of Horrors is interesting stuff: It’s the crypt of some nasty lich, absolutely full of hilariously convoluted, deadly, “unfair” traps, of all different kinds. After hearing about Tomb of Horrors, I tracked down a paper copy of Tomb of Horrors and read it (despite not really knowing the rules for D&D), and I was thoroughly entertained, and this might be worth it for anyone else who enjoys Sprint and the idea behind it. Dungeon Sprint is like Tomb of Horrors: it’s a pretty small game, just full of nasty little traps, most of which have a number of ways to circumvent; and you can throw yourself at the game over and over until you figure out how to get past a certain trap (and then you get killed by the next one). Unlike Crawl, which is randomly generated, the fact that certain parts of Sprint are fixed gives you a comfortable, enjoyable sense of familiarity in the early part of the game, and an enjoyable sense of exploring a dangerous new place when you get into some part you haven’t been in before. I think Sprint’s a lot of fun, and I hope other Crawl players will too.

There’s an important thing about Sprint: what I’ve actually released is called “Dungeon Sprint 1.” That “1″ isn’t a version number; it’s supposed to indicate that it’s just the first game in a series. You can easily make a new level for Sprint to take place on, by editing the file source/dat/des/variable/entry.des in the Sprint source code, the “dungeon-sprint” branch on git://git.develz.org/crawl-ref.git. Making new levels this way is actually pretty straightforward: Crawl’s .des files aren’t hard to read and change even for a non-programmer, and there’s a how-to guide here. I hope others will feel free to make future installments of Sprint (Sprint 2, Sprint 3, and so on) – it’s designed so that anyone who likes it should be able to make a new level for it, and make the next edition of Sprint.

I hope you enjoy the game.

-Chapayev

A note by the editor: In the mean-time Dungeon Sprint has already been added to the master branch of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and the level file has been renamed to dat/des/sprint/sprint.des. If you would like to try – grab a latest master/trunk build. Activate the “sprint-mode” by adding
-sprint
as parameter when you start the binary.

All those gory details are now available via this website, too! Head over to the Knowledge Bots and check it out for yourself.

Note: During this weekend the queries should become considerably faster – after remote access to the great LearnDB has been simplified.

Update: LearnDB is now mirrored and parsing the entries is done locally. Much faster! Links in Henzell entries are now clickable. Colors have been slightly adjusted and screenshot of Sigmund added :) Enjoy!

Stone Soup’s speed of development has become really hard to keep up with.

I remember installing a new development version on CDO every week or two. Suddenly I’m being asked to update almost every day! Awesome! :-D

For that reason I have changed the way of installing. A new version will no longer overwrite data or save-games of an old one. This means your character will no longer be lost or broken when an update is done.

Even more: Every save-game has an internal version number. When you load your character and there is a newer version of Stone Soup installed, which can also handle your save-game, you will be presented with an option to move your character and enjoy the bug-fixes and new features!

As always – if you run into any trouble or if transferring your save-game fails, let me know. Cheers!

I have setup a new Bug Tracker System and integrated a Wiki into it:

http://crawl.develz.org/mantis/

The software used is called “Mantis” in Version 1.1.8.

Once you log in and your level is set by anyone from the admin group (currently jpeg, dpeg, evktalo or me) you automatically also have the appropriate access to the Wiki. Either follow the big Wiki link in the top bar, the link presented at every “Issue” or go here directly:

http://crawl.develz.org/wiki/

The software used is called “DokuWiki” in Version 2009-02-14b.

Anonymous read-only access is enabled for now.

Evktalo has started configuring the BTS and created a Wiki entry open for discussing the settings here.

Eronarn volunteered to structure the Wiki but wants to wait until all the decisions have been made.

I’d like to invite all of you to register and have a look and voice your opinions here or there, please :)

Important note:
We are still testing and adjusting these 2 pieces of software and haven’t decided yet.
So for the time being I suggest to stick to our bug tracker at Sourceforge.

More important note:
We have finished migrating from SourceForge to Mantis and DokuWiki!

First of all, thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Crawl Tournament, and special thanks to greensnark, Onia, and eredien for all of their help with tournament logistics and prizes. We had more than 700 players this year — edging up on NetHack tournament territory!

Our first place prize, a custom-skinned 9″ Asus eee netbook, goes to 78291, who scored over 4000 individual points in our tournament scoring system. Close behind him was mikee, with 3879; until an unfortunate drowning death near the end of the month, it was pretty much neck and neck. 78291 also scored the fastest real-time win (2:21:28), the top score (a 50K turn all-runer DDCK), the first victory of the tournament (a sub 3-hour SpCK of Lugonu), a decaying rune fetched at XL 8, the two wins with the fewest kills, and a streak of seven consecutive wins. Basically what we’re saying here is: Stabwound, watch out.

78291 hardly took all of the prizes, though. For one thing, 78291′s team, cabal, came in second place to team FirstName, with five of its six players in the top ten for the tournament.

rob managed a 16029-turn win with a DDBe on the second to last day of the tournament, edging out elliptic’s 19043-turn DDCK win.

mikee took the first all-rune win, fifteen hours into the tournament, with another DDCK.

elliptic had an eight-game streak: DSBe, MiFi, DDNe, MfCr, HOPr, HEAE, SpEn, MDAr.

Only one player, trucutru, managed to leave a Ziggurat on Z:27 all month – so clearly we need to reward that more next year. :)

Ealbright took the most race/class combo high scores with 23, in a very tight race that went right down to the wire. The Bay12Dwarfs team got the most as a team, at 63.

No one got an XL:1 character to D:27 this year; dpeg came the closest at D:23.

What about all those special achievements? Well, the hardest to get was “Xom Prefers A Heretic,” which required mollifying every god over the course of the month. I say hardest not just because it was hard, but because due to a bug where Nemelex could not be mollified, it was impossible. :) Both 78291 and Heteroy would have done it if it weren’t for the bug, though, so they get full credit.

Four players succeeded in getting the “Free Will” award, starting with an elementalist and mastering the opposite elemental skill. Those players were 78291, heteroy, jenius, and trucutru.

Eighteen players managed to kill Sigmund 27 or more times during the month: chog, eabright, grimm, heteroy, jenius, johan, jokeserver, kilobyte, maddasher, mafalda, nmf, phyphor, sorbius, stormfox, tgw, vizr, zenzei, ziropiro. They were awarded “The Scythe.” Sigmund himself had 1140 kills.

Surprising me, only eight players achieved “The Pantheon,” selecting every god not as a starting god during the tournament: 78291, dartanion, eli, heteroy, keolah, mikee, sorbius, and stossel.

Note: Repost of rax’s posting to r.g.r.m. See you all next year again!
