Most successful character to date; scored a ton of personal firsts. First time clearing Lair and Orc, first time delving into Elf and Vaults. First time even seeing the abyss, and I survived to escape, so that was pretty heartening. That one's all on Makhleb, though, spamming minor servant made running away from anything and everything in there a breeze.

As for what went wrong, well, that's another first. First time meeting Mara. I seriously considered running the second I opened the door and spotted him. Possibly I should have, but I felt like if I met him for the first time and didn't at least try to fight him, then the next time I met him, I still wouldn't know how to handle him. I wanted first-hand experience, and boy did I get it. I would have escaped with my life, of course, if the darned teleport wand hadn't dumped me right back into the middle of the room I was running from, but I fully recognize that I should've zapped it sooner. Could've used agility and might potions too, but I spent that whole fight trying to get a good position and barely even had a chance to land a hit, so it wouldn't have made much difference, I suspect.

Aside from that somewhat anti-climatic end, that game was dominated by one main concern, and that was finding a decent weapon. Of course, since I'm a newbie, I was largely trying to figure out what a good weapon actually is. That demon blade was my first good find - got it from the labyrinth along with some other neat stuff. I used it for about half my fights from there on, swapping it out with the scimitar of Deflation when I was fighting cold or magic mobs. I got the feeling though that the scimitar might have been better overall - I just wish that demon blade had been branded. The flaming scimitar was a very late find, I kept it on the offchance I'd see more hydras but infact, every hydra I beat I punched to death, and I never saw another one after finding it.

My biggest regret - Mara shenanigans notwithstanding - is not using either of my acquirement scrolls on jewellery. That gourmand amulet was my only neckwear for the entire game, and while it was really ridiculously useful, it'd have been nice to have some mutation resistance or clarity. Probably keep that in mind if another game goes the same way.

Think I'll run a few more fighters... I'd been avoiding them cuz I figured they'd be boring, but this was actually a blast.

So anywho, I feel like I learned a heap from this one, but I'm sure there's lots more that went right over my head. If anyone spots any blindingly obvious rookie mistakes then feel free to point them out. My skilling was probably way out of whack, but I didn't want to get caught up too much with crunching numbers so I just went by feel - raised stuff when I felt I needed it. It seemed to work, but then again, I got beat.

As a fighter or gladiator, worshipping Okawaru might be easier for getting familiar with crawl. His weapon gifts will finally solve the weapon problem.

Okawaru is my go-to God for melee right now, that one's kind of a funny story. Short version, though, is that I found an Oka altar vault which was surrounded by lava, and had no way to get to it. On the very next floor I found a Makhleb altar and, not wanting to turn down a headstart at piety, I took it. Looking back, waiting 'till the temple wouldn't have been such a huge hardship, but I did quite enjoy my time with Makhleb so I don't mind much...

Ah, I was under the impression that a few levels in unarmed combat would help with my headbutt attack. Early on it was killing more stuff than my swords were, so I figured more of it would be a good thing. Not so, I take it?

Large shield slowed down your attacks, don't wear it unless you have Shields 25. For this character going for Shields 25 was not worth it though.
Don't forget to check first time uniques in game ('x', '+', 'v'), Mara sees invisible. Mara is the most dangerous unique IMHO and I usually avoid it if possible, but as a character in plate armour you had no choice of course, you were unlucky with teleport.
Unarmed Combat skill is useless if you wield any weapon.
Train Dodging instead of shields next time, it is not useless even in plate armour (you would need 10+ skill to see any boost though, but it will add many points in EV after that). Also it means putting stat points in Dex is a better idea than in Str (you need Str 18 for plate armour in 0.12, there is little point to increase it above that)

On the surface, choosing to fight Mara with a 185HP melee dude with a +10 antimagic scimitar and rF++ seems like a pretty reasonable decision. Not sure why your fight went so badly, but that open terrain you ended up in doesn't seem like a good place to fight.

Ideally, you'd want to make Mara turn the corner into you so you can quickly close to melee range. With a little luck, you might be able to keep him from casting at all (with sufficient hits of antimagic weapon). If he blinks away, don't run after him. Make him turn the corner again. If he does manage to clone you, consider running.

Buffing before tough fights is good. In your case, it looks like you hasted, which was good, and turned yourself invisible, which was useless. You'd have known that Mara has SInv by checking the bots are even using 'x'. Potion of might would have been useful too. And maybe a Greater Servant or 2 to gang up on Mara.

The decision is reasonable but still very risky. Mara can clone you, clone himself, teleport himself while throwing Bolts of Fire at you. That's exactly what happened in my last game with melee character so you better have ?Blink or at least cTele before trying to kill Mara. Another my character died to a spell after missing twice in a row with anti-magic weapon.

Nah, shields at 14 is okay. You need shields 25 for your large shield if you're casting spells, but if you're just melee-ing dudes, a much lower number is fine.

Unless you think the SH bonus important and worth sacrificing for.

I think with that skill level, it was adding 0.2 aut to most attacks, and occasionally 0.3. So the result is he was doing 75% as much damage as normal. That is fairly significant. But it's also a lot of SH.

I think you hit the nail on the head, here. I underestimated rF++ but my biggest mistake was not taking advantage of antimagic. A better player with my gear would surely have stomped Mara, but at least now I understand exactly why he's so tough. The invisibility was a later addition, btw - Mara can see invisible, but as far as I could tell, my clone couldn't. I do agree that it turned out to be a waste of a turn, though. I live and learn.

Mostly what I'm hearing here is pretty heartening. I'll take it into account in my next game - scratch the unarmed investment, put it into dodging instead. Keep levelling my shields higher, although there's no way I'm passing up a large shield if my attack speed is still in reasonable realms.

As a side note, I think I should have levelled traps sooner. It was around 3-ish when I entered vaults, and my first (ever) zot trap was an unpleasant experience I do not want to repeat.

One tip with a melee character is to abuse wands of digging/disintigration to make kill zones. That way you force the monster(s) to come next to you before the battle begins. This can carry you through virtually any part of the game that has rock walls. Mara would've been a cakewalk with your gear if he was forced to fight you in melee, though since this was your first time dying to him is understandable.

Also the traps skill is gone in .13, and was virtually useless in earlier versions imo. Maybe level it up to 10 for the very late game if you really want to, but only once you're set with everything else.

Yeah, I'll be upgrading to .13 as soon as I'm done with my current batch of characters. I still have a promising conjurer and fire elementalist on .12 and I want to give them the chance to splat dramatically first.

Although it's quite common to find a good 1hand long blade (especially in elf) I routinely prefer to train m&f (or eventually polearma) with melee character who don't worship oka or trog, as it's impossible to not find very early a good great mace (often with a good brand too).
Btw, your choice to worship makhleb was perfectly reasonable and he's in any case a very solid choice as he's much stronger than oka in the medium run - eventually for this char you could have spent your acquirement scrolls on weapon, it has a very good chance to give an excellent one (but that demon blade, at least after getting a decent brand, could have been an endgame weapon too)

I think Makhleb is the best god for axe users. It allows to easily fight multiple monsters in open terrain (like Vaults 5 entrance). Yes, I know it is not recommended but it is very fun.

Invisibility wasn't just useless, it was harmful. Since you had no SInv, you got to-hit penalty in melee due to not seeing your own hands.
