CIP->XL27YASD:My next DEFE In progress!

Hi Guys,

Another DEFE here, Just completed Lair and enjoying the game thus far. How do I find out what that papyrus high level book is that I have?

Had a scary moment earlier where I thought I'd commited suicide. Went down to lair:8. Saw a pack of death yaks, sheep and elephants (5 death yaks, 8 sheep, 2 elephants)

I thought sweet, I'll fireball them a bit, then up the stairs and down another stair to finish them off.

This game I didn't learn throw flame, so my fireball is D rather than E. Out of habit I did Z->E...which is blink. I ended up right in the centre of the pack of them!!!!

Luckily I sticky flamed the sheep, read scroll of fear and made for the stairs, all the sheep died (never knew it spread between them, its hilarious) and I got upstairs with only 1 death yak in tow, So I promptly sticky flamed that and ran around until it died. Scary facepalm moment though!

Also just drank a potion of beneficial mutation, and got the blink ability. Sweet, thats rather annoying, giving me a spell I already have!

the ability is usually cheaper also you can now forget the spell and memorize something else

Doesn't that set waypoints?

I see some people playing web tiles that open their inventory and they have aum values listed for the weights of all the items, seems like something you have to change in your rc to me? I'll have a look anyway when I get home.

Will vehement gift me fire storm 100% or is it change based what I get?

I have changed fire ball to E as I'm used to and blink to P as far away as I can get :)

Should I use scroll of I'd on that spell book or is that a waste?

ctrl+w in inventory screen displays or hides item weight. If you want it to be displayed by default, your rc file should have show_inventory_weights set to true.

No, firestorm is not guaranteed to be among Veh's final gifts.

Well, THAT was exciting.

Just encountered a strange vault on D:12 with an altar of Sif Muna in it (Oh, and about 8 vampire mages, a hungry ghost, a mottled dragon, four naga mages, two orc sorcerers, an efreet and obviously a whole crapload of summoned stuff from the orc)

I got sticky flamed by the mottled dragon initially, so dropped most of my scrolls. Then proceeded to kill the mottled dragon. An orc sorcerer must of heard it, as he came along and promptly summoned a load of crap. It took five bolts of fire to kill him (I later learned he was wearing a +2 robe of resistance) This just left his summons to deal with at that time.

After getting smited four times in four moves by a lone smoke demon, (Down to 29hp) summoned by its now-late master; I started to panic. In the end, all I had to do was move away, I didn't know how much slower than me it was. So anyway, after that panic was over and I'd moved halfway across the map, I waited to recover my HP (The level was almost fully explored)

An efreet appeared from around the corner. At this point, I had NO non-fire elemental spells to kill it with. I RTFA away from it, and it almost killed me too. A summon butterflies managed to get me to the stairs, and I waited and regenerated.

I figured since I had RF+++ available to me at the time, and a scimitar of freezing, I'd try and kill it in melee. No good. It won that fight! I bailed at about 60%HP and tried to teleport...

I unwielded, teleport wanded myself and waited out the delay. the teleport dumped me right into the furthest reaches of the only unexplored bit left on the level, the weird Sif Muna vault. Next to an Orc Sorcerer and a vampire mage. I managed to kill them both quietly (despite having no sInv) and waited my HP and MP to recover.

I then cleared the rest of the vault of the remaining stuff uneventfully, and started to look around at what this place was. I learned Iron Shot from somewhere, and later killed the efreet in two shots with that.

Wow, thanks Sif, and I don't even worship you! I also later found a +2 robe of resistance from one of the orcs, and various other nice bits (A +3 robe of magic resistance, yada yada)

I'm NEVER doing that again at this level, but my gosh I got some nice rewards :) I Learned swiftness and regeneration as I think they are really good spells, and now I'm training Charms, Necromancy and Transmutations so I can hopefully identify my unknown book as the necromonicon, cast necromutation fairly sharpish once I can understand the book, and also cast haste easily when I hopefully find it.

I really hope I find some see invis soon though, I HATE dealing with invisible stuff blind. Unseen horrors can easily ruin your day.

It's going well so far, but I'm annoyed and worried that I STILL have no means of invis detection, nor do I have repel/deflect missiles available to me, or haste.

I dont want to go deeper into Dungeon because I've had three times now a heart attack due to stupid unseen horrors. Whats the best way to deal with these when out in the open?

I don't want to do shoals because I don't have Rmsl or Dmsl.

I don't want to do elven halls because it scares the crap out of me.

I don't want to do Orc:4 because I don't think I'm quite experienced enough yet

I don't want to do slime for obvious reasons

Where do I go next with this character?

P.s poisonous cloud / ignite poison is hilarious. Performing two actions and then ending fights against multiple enemies with .... is very satisfying :)

when an unseen horror hits you if you are not close to walls or corridors you need to get to them somehow, you have poisonous cloud so you could just surround yourself with poison. I usually play wizards, so I just meph them

Figure out which side of you the horror is on and try to hit it with sticky flame. Or drop poisonous cloud on yourself. The horror should show up as a disturbance in the cloud, letting you target it with fireball.

You have everything you need for Orc:4. Sack up and do it. You can probably steamroll Elf1-2 with poisonous cloud too, though you should probably just go back to D and solve the unseen horror problem.

I think the chance to hit it with sticky flame might be quite low, considering how it moves and it often not adjacent to you, so poisonous cloud seems like a more reliable way to deal with them

They move like bats. Think about how often a bat winds up next to you. Honestly, this character should have nothing to fear from anything between D:13 and Vaults.

I'm just reading up on poisonous cloud; Am I right in thinking the only damage it does is lingering poison damage? (i.e its not like fire storm where it does massive initial damage and then lingering fire damage?)

I'm worried about poison clouding myself!

You can sticky flame them in corridors but I wouldnt even bother trying in large open areas unless this poison cloud thing works perfectly...

Poison cloud stacks poison on monsters very quickly. It's quite worthy of being a level 6 spell, making short work of everything it affects.

You, as a player, can prepare for it by carrying potions of curing to use once you're out of the cloud and the unseen horror is dead.

But what Im getting at is that it doesn't have an "impact damage" like a fireball does? You cast it, and it just poisons things right?

Like, I wont take 50 damage when I cast it on my own head and then 10 damage per turn thereafter. Its just the 10 damage per turn that I get isnt it, theres no initial cast damage?

Well thanks for the advice guys, orc:4 done now, that was pretty easy. Will continue on with more Dungeon. Still no invis detection (Save for a crossbow I can buy with the intrinsic but obv not for this character)

No poison resistance either, and nothing of use in orc:4 shops except a CBOE which I only have 10 evocations for at the moment, so probably not a good idea to use it just yet!

Might try some more Dungeon tomorrow and the upper levels of elf.

Right. It does a few poison damage each turn to anything in it, and will do some longer term damage over time through poison status. This last bit usually seems pretty minor
to me, so I liked using P. Cloud with melee (where a bunch of monsters would line up waiting for their turn to fight you and so eat tons of damage) or by dropping it from afar and
forcing guys to run through a couple of them. You will not get best results just firing and forgetting a la Fire Storm. The damage per turn is quite a bit weaker than Freezing Cloud,
so you really need to milk it.

Ok cool, what I'm getting at is that if I cast it on my own head with 50hp because I need to find an unseen horror, its not going to kill me instantly (probably a bad idea at that HP I know but its an example)

Well, if you really want SInv, you can buy this xbow and wield it while you Sticky Flame or Fireball the (now seen) horror. Personally, I've always found Sticky Flame without SInv to be sufficient. Just get into a corridor and Sticky Flame it after it hits you.

The last three spells never time out. Also, forgetting iron shot would be a bad idea in general. It's one of the most useful spell in extended because no demons have resistance to earth magic (and I think the fact applies to all crawl monsters in general).

Edit: even if you go 3-rune, iron shot is very useful at taking out orb of fire, mottled and red draconians, lich, golems, etc.

You could forget ignite poison and poisonous cloud later. At level 16 you wouldn't be able to cast fire storm reliably anyway.

Ok cool, I'll learn deflect missiles then and go do shoals.

Got 3 scrolls of aquirement, I chose two books and a piece of jewellery (In an effort to get the haste spell, and some see invis, or sustain abilities)

Bloody thing gave me a +2 strength ring (Eugh, why) and a book I already have. Luckily though I got deflect missiles, which I needed, so its not all bad.

When your 8 AC/19 EV/89HP XL 16 DE has no haste spell and no wands of hasting/HW, you ask acquirement for wands and then get more than 8 AC/19 EV.

That you're a really weak deep elf with three potions of speed and no other apparent source of haste, so I'd acquire wands for heal wounds or hasting and then work more on defenses.

Ok...isnt the point of a DEFE just not letting anything get near you though? So you don't need defenses? :)

The way I've been playing is blasting anything till its dead. Sticky flame and Blinking if it gets too close and I have mana, or going back up the stairs and down another one if I have no mana (retreating to the stairs at 50% mana)

Eventually you need some kind of defense, because lot of monsters can blast you before you get near them (centaur and yaktaur just to name the few). Which is the reason why casters sometimes were FDA, train armor, dodging, and hp, learn ozocubu's armor or stoneskin. With your AC, centaur arrows gonna hit really hard. You can't lure them into the corner every time you meet them.

Also, casting sticky flame means you let yourself get close to a potentially deadly monster. You'd want to have have some decent AC as you descend further into the dungeon.

On unrelated note, why did you train necromancy when you don't' have any necromancy spells?

you are saying strange things... your character doesn't look like what you are talking about. I mean if you would just train fire and conjuration from the beginning, you could be able to pull that off, like by just fire storming that pack of yaktaurs that would otherwise kill you in 3 shots, but now you could as well just complete your basic defensive stuff, to make an optimal character. train shields to 5, butcher the first mottled dragon you encounter and enchant his hide to +6, that will make your character much tougher. If you will be able to do that, train a bit of armour and bit more dodging. If you learn haste (and it doesn't take long for DE) that will make you much more effective and survivable, too.

Shit sometimes happens though, like going down stairs and finding yourself next to several tough enemies... wait didn't that happen in one of your previous games? Or am I confusing you with someone else.

The point of DEFE is you get reliable sticky flame very early on (which is the best spell in your book because it deals a ton of damage, never misses and doesn't benefit from spellpower so just getting it castable is good), get dodging, get a wepon, whack fools and burn them too.
You can of course train magic further but unless you find some really good spellbooks you get more bang for your exp buck getting your EV to a decent point (and later on your AC too when you get a MDA or the like) and starting to work on melee offense.
Yes you can play DEFE as some sort of high class wizard who is allergic to hitting people with a stick.
No it's by far not optimal and will kill you a good bunch of times, doubly so if you think you're somehow immune to damage because you can cast blasty spells.

My two cents:
I think it's completely viable to be a DEFE who doesn't train weapon skills.
If you take Sif Muna, you will get Bolt of Fire early enough that it will be available by the time you can cast it. This spell is really good; so good in fact that I think deviating from conjuration/fire training
in favor of hitting things with a stick is a bad idea. You'll probably also get Sublimation of Blood, which is low level and basically solves all your mana problems. And if you don't have the 2mp for sublimation, just Sif channel.
Using a weapon doesn't have good synergy with sticky flame because it's better to flee once they're enflamed (they take damage, you don't) than hit them. The only early game exception is centaurs, which suck in melee so you just use throw flame on them from melee range until they die.
I never take Vehumet anymore with DEFEs, it's too much of a crapshoot what spell you will get.
Now, you should still train dodging and a little fighting, but I wouldn't put much into either before getting Bolt of Fire online.
I only train weapon skill very late game, and then only if I get a staff of fire. I do put significant training into dodging and a fair bit into fighting.
If I wasn't so careless I'd win with this approach every single time. It's very strong.

Ok, I feel like lots of people are saying lots of different things here!

I have bolt of fire perfectly castable.

My fireball is very strong (1 shots most low and mid level enemies, including centaurs. 2 shots yaktaurs)

I have repel missiles (So many arrows dont hit me)

I have blink (So If I get surrounded I can get out.

My mention of sticky flame was only that I use it when (And IF, and thats a big IF) A monster manages to get next to me.

My play style goes like this... If I see a single orc. I let it close to me and whack it with my staff of fire until its dead.

If there is more than 1 orc, or a single orc shouts, I blast it with fireball and it dies. If something else appears; I blast it and it dies. Repeat until 50% mana. If I have enemies that I have been unable to kill before they reach me I sticky flame them (For example if I have something dangerous closing from 9oclock and I am shooting at it, leaving the enemy closing in on me from 3 oclock to approach me freely)

I rarely use sticky flame any more. The only time anything manages to get next to me now when I don't want it to is generally snakes (Because I ignore them because they arent that dangerous with sticky flame and ignite poison)

I do melee some things, but not many. I am focusing my XP on nuking spells, in 90% of fights I do not take any damage at all.

I am training necromancy because I think I have the Necromonicon in my inventory, and I need to train necromancy to 10 to identify it. If Its not it, then it doesnt matter. I just want to be able to cast necromutation at some point.

I have trained some weapon skills and some dodging. I havent trained any armor skills as I thought that casters did not wear armour? Doesn't it screw up both spellcasting and EV? Any time I've put any armor on that doesnt gimp my casting it seems i'm just trading EV for AC (E.g 20EV 8AC in robe, 8EV 12AC in armor)

I'm currently only training fire magic and conjurations and spellcasting now to get fire storm castable. My play style will continue with that spell. Nuke things until I start to run half empty on mana. Then retreat to the stairs. Nuke things from the stairs until I something gets within 2 squares or I run out of mana. Climb stairs, regen mana, go back downstairs (If there arent many dangerous enemies) and resume nuking.

Should I be doing it differently!?

Its happened a couple of times. The first time was on orc:3, I went down some stairs and there were a lot of enemies. I blasted away, then ascended the stairs to recharge. Went back downstairs, and realised I hadn't spotted an ettin in amongst multiple popcorn orcs. The ettin two shotted me (Once as I went down the stairs, once as I went back up)

I didnt have any blinking available to me, so not noticing the ettin is what killed me :)

The second time was in lair, where there was an 8 headed hydra and a few other bits right next to the stairs. I went off and did something else for a while, came back with blink and haste, went downstairs, blinked, then killed the crap out of them.

I don't think its possible to have a DEFE strong enough to take on hydras, elephants and ettins in melee is it?

Someone once told me that the whole point of DEFE is killing things before they get to you, and the only DEFE I've had that got firestorm proved this. I killed Mennas in 3 fire storms, before he got any attacks off. I killed Boris in four, all he did was go invisible. I got to D:27 without breaking any kind of sweat; But not understanding the spirit wolf mechanic killed me in the end, I ran out of MP fighting them (And making noise and attracting more) While howled, and then forgot that I had blinking scrolls / Teleportation scrolls / Potions of speed / heal wounds / invisibility / fear in my inventory and jsut let them maul me!

I am training necromancy because I think I have the Necromonicon in my inventory

Do you think wasting XP on a skill you are not using and possibly won't use is worth one identify scroll?

I directly asked the question before "how do I identify this book" and nobody said an ID scroll will work. Will it?! I do want lich form at some point anyway, so hopefully its not wasted XP, but I thought i HAD to train necromancy to identify the Necronomicon.

I'm not sure what you mean. It seems to me that once you get howled, the game generates infinitely more spirit wolves, which all bite for 1/4 my HP...so I dont think dying to them is that bad?!

Actually that's a good trade, on the whole AC is better at preventing death than EV. When you get your spellcasting skills high enough, you can start to wear progressively heavier armour and still have a good spell success ratio.

Best common (non dragon) armour to wear early is elven ring mail, for an elf it's like wearing robes that give you a bunch more AC. Steam dragon armour and Mottled dragon armour are eventually good and can be used with little to no Str and no Armour skill.

Ultimately upgrading to something like Fire dragon armour or Ice dragon armour would be preferable, but that takes some investment.

The problem with being a glass cannon is that no matter how carefully you play, something will *eventually* hit you, and if you can't take that hit, you die. It only takes one death to end your game, ya know.

Good point I suppose. What does the armor skill do for a caster then?

I actually found an ice dragon armor earlier in the game, so might go pick that up.

The point is, by the time you get to fighting them, spirit wolves shouldn't be taking 1/4 of your hps, it should be more like 1/15th, maybe 1/20th. The fact that you could be killed in 4 hits means you didn't have enough defenses.

Also it's not infinite, it is quite a few though (roughly 10-20ish) It's tough for a blaster mage because they'll run you out of mana if you pick them off individually, and they'll surround you if you try to run so you can cluster them together and use multiple hit spells.

More flexibility (in terms of better defense and either channeling or a no-mana offense) would have kept you alive against them, and doesn't take much exp to do (Compared to how much it takes to get a couple more points of damage out of your primary skills at that point in the game)

I remember high-spellpower Bolt of Fire having good accuracy.
ID scroll will certainly work. Necromutation is probably the worst spell in Necronomicon though (it's the book that has spell which makes you literally unkillable, it's quite fun to use).
If your char could melee you'd probably deal with spirit wolves easily. Fun story: my last DEFE died in Hell because I firestormed myself because I was playing the classic Firestorm-Necromut-no-melee DEFE combo. It ended up being unbelievably annoying and tiring and my aim slipped. I wasn't even upset at dying!

Uh, there's not much to share, it's called Death's Door and it literally does that (with some drawbacks, obviously):

And then there is Borgnjor's Revivification, which will restore all your HP in a single cast (you lose some maxpHP but it beats dying):

Both of those are easier to get (Borg is single school and level 7, DD is like Necromut in that it's a level 8 double-school spell, but its second school is Charms, which has a lot of other spells useful for any character). And both can't be used while in Lich Form.

Bolt of fire does much more damage than fireball and has a much better AoE given the way monsters move in craw. If it's the extended endgame you're worried about, good spellpower BoF normally oneshots ice fiends and two shots shadow fiends.
While firestorm is fine and dandy, I think BoF is normally more than enough ranged damage than you'll need costing a ton less exp and thus letting you get a much sturdier character.

Precisely how AC and EV balance out for defense is probably pretty situational and complicated, but I'd bet a lot of money that for general dungeon traversing 8/20 -> 12/8 is always a bad trade. Taking an average of 2 more damage isn't so bad when you're dodging that much more often.

So heres where I am right now, I got that ring of see invisible, which is nice.

I figure now I train fire magic to get fire storm, potentially in paralell with some more dodging/staves/armor while I do more dungeon, the first levels of vaults and look for better AC armors.

I'm also going to make an effort to learn deflect missiles instead of repel. Is it possible to enchant my fire staff?
