YASD VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

I'm kind of experienced with dcss, won many times, some 15 runes, but mostly with straight fighters, blasters, transmuters or hybrid, I really suck at sneakers, I can't play SpEn for example (maybe because of my noob mania of killing everything).
Now I'm playing a VpEn to try the new 0.13 stabbing and I'm having the easiest time ever. I've killed every single monster I encountered (except Aizul in swamp 4 that escaped me and I was lazy to search him) with my health hardly dropping at all. Start was kind of normal but since lair it's even easier than playing a MiBe.
My initial plan was to worship Jiyva at some point and then when I have a nice mutation set switch to Makhleb (wanted to test if it can work). As starting with Jiyva isn't really an option I picked Okawaru to help with enemies immune to Hibernation / hexes, keep some gifts after switching and incurring in an easy wrath. As I don't loose much health and I often bite I can sacrifice 99% of the bodies, so it's working out pretty well.

Invocation I kept it at zero as I don't need finesse due to haste, I will soon take some levels to get heroism to 0% (not that I've used it much).
Shield at 15 wasn't really necessary but I had a manual and 2 nice shields (reflection and protection).
I just noticed that I should train some more my magic skills to be able to remove the ring of wizardry.

Now some questions:
- As I'm not familiar with extended use of invisibility I don't know if every source of invisibility gives contamination (potion says nothing, cloak mentions only faster metabolism).
- Am I overpowered due to the change to stabbing (I trained 2 skills instead of 3) or VpEn was always so strong before extended?
- Is it a suicide to switch to Jiyva, go through cleared lvls to get mutations, then switch to Makhleb? I will have wrath of Okawaru (easy) and Jiyva together.
- What is better as main weapon, sabre of elect or quickblade (I could vorpalize one with fire or ice).
- What should I focus on for the extended? I'm planning ice. Or maybe air for zigs (zigs are where I splat most chars :) )

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

-Every source of invisibility gives contamination, but potions give less.
-Don't worry, your unlife will become deeply unpleasant when you run out of blood, all the enemies see invisible, and Hellfire gets thrown in your face. But Vp has good aptitudes- I think they'd be played more often if Spriggans didn't have that AND ludicrous speed.
-Unless you can stay Alive almost constantly, getting mutations, good or bad, as an undead will Rot you. I don't recommend going Jiyva.
-I think a highly enchanted quickblade would be superior.

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

A VpEn is the first combo I ever won with - so for the way I enjoy playing, they are the strongest race/background combo.
I prefer Ashenzari for a fun sneak and stab game, Okawaru for when I'm mostly just want to fight through it all, and Sif Muna if I want to really want to go to town with the magiks.
They all play out differently, depending on the God choice.

I don't know about getting a "mutation set", because I stay bloodless, near bloodless for the entire game. I don't see why it would be necesary to aquire mutations, when the class is easily strong enough as is.

I remember one shot killing things with a -4 dagger, this included hydras, giants, dragons, demons, orb guardians, etc. So if you have enough stabbing skill and a dagger, this is normal.

Can't answer about switching Gods, I stay with whichever I initially choose - for the entire game (see above).

Quickblade of freezing is good, I would go with that. Keep the saber of electrocution with you for cold immune monsters. But ideally; a one hit stab with a dagger is what you really want. No need to then worry about melee. If the monster is awake, and you can't put it to sleep/paralyze/petrify/confuse - then go do something else for a while and come back later when it gets bored and falls asleep.

Can't answer the zigs question, because I don't play the way you imagin. I'm a big fan of the Hexes school of magic, and use mostly only those. Very high power EH, Confuse, Inner Flame, Enslavement, Polymorph, Mass Confusion, etc - can be very fun. There are many monsters that are magic immune in the late game, so you have to become creative.
:)

Looks like you have a good character going there. Good luck with him.

Yeah, basically all that's gonna happen to you is rotting as far as mutations go. Even with the potion of beneficial mutation unless you're at or near Alive when you drink it...which I never am (and really you shouldn't be either, unless you're crazy enough to want to try a VpTm) once I hit XL 6 and can bottle blood. I've even gotten rot instead of a mutation at satiated or full before. As someone stated earlier, going with Jivya is basically going to be counter-productive for you.

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

I switched to Jiyva and I'm profoundly hating it :)
Jiyva keeps you alive most of time, because when jellies eat something it gives nutrition. All my chars going Jiyva are constantly engorged, it's normal.
With this experiment I also found out that Jiyva doesn't try to give u mutations unless you are alive.
After giving me some good mutations like robust and plated arms it has removed them and now keeps giving me mutations that will not work in bloodless or mutations like horns and pseudopods that are plain bad for this char :(
I've cleared D1-20, Orcs and Elfs (those are main source of Jiyva sacrifices) and I'm still stuck with crap mutations... I'll have to keep Jiyva longer than I planned to... This means playing non-bloodless, doh!

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

The longer you stay with good ol' Oka, the more likely you are to get something good, but even so, Okawaru's wrath is easy to manage.
Jiyva's on the other hand is rather mean. Unfortunately the more common options for late-game like Zin or TSO aren't available to you.

Makhleb isn't too reliable unless you plan on being bloodless nearly always, you might consider Ashenzari if you get particularily good gear to curse. Ash's power to see through walls helps anyone that doesn't want to be seen.

From personal experience, quick-blades dispatch things way more effectively than a sabre. Considering a lot of things resist fire, I'd go with ice, especially since it can slow some cold-blooded things (which includes hydras in the newer, development versions?).

Oh, you switched to Jiyva already? Troublesome. Well, hopefully things turn out well.

did not you try to stash some mutation potions somewhere? you can use them and then delete the bad mutations you dont like

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

I have several mutation potions, and some remove mutation potion and some positive mutations potions. I could try to play a bit with them. Quaffing normal mutation potion is more likely to remove mutations than add new as I already have many.

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

In case someone is intereste I will keep here a diary of which mutation are suppressed by thirst:

+ Your flesh is heat resistant
+ You passively map a small area around you
+ Your spells are a little harder to cast but a little more powerful
+ You posses and exceptional clarity of mind

Not sure which is the rationale behind it.

Re: CiP VpEn Overpowered so far

From what I garner about those listed in your above post; Ashenzari would have given magic mapping, clarity and improved spell school levels (if you have cursed jewelry/amulet slots). So being with that god technically grants some of the mutations you are after. A ring of fire resistance would fill the last one.

I think you are maybe trying to play against a vampires' strengths, or natural abilities. It's a lot easier, I find, to play them at bloodless/near bloodless satiation levels.
For mutations to really work (or even to have the best chance at acquiring them, you need to be at full alive status, which really negates the benefits of the opposite end (bloodless/near bloodless) affects.

Maybe you should try playing either a troll, demonspawn, demigod, or some other type of race that can deal with mutations more easily.

Progressing quite well, I settled for a decent set of mutation (nothing outstanding but none bad). Switched to Makhleb, Wrath of Jiyva was ridicolous, a few yellow contaminations (rotted maybe 10 hp total) and a few jellies spawn (that even healed thx to Makhleb). So my Okawaru --> Jiyva --> Makhleb experiment is successful. After switching to Makhleb I did Slime pit, Crypt, Tomb (that is my most feared area but being bloodless and casting silence made it not too hard). After that I totally changed my spell set, dropped Ensorcelled hybern, confuse, invi, ozocubu refrigeration and silence. Then I worked for tornado (that sadly is at 12% even with 27 skill).
Clearing Pan now. Cerebov and Glorq dead. Holy pan Cleared. My main combo with vaults (if large chamber) is buff, blink in center, tornado, kill kill kill. Due to great defense it works well. If after tornado too many enmies left I blink away (happened only at Cerebov so far).
Not really sure which other spells could I pick up.

Re: CiP VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

Phase Shift comes to mind, You could get Summon elemental and summon some air elementals as air-immune blockers/meleers while your tornado whirls around.

Re: CiP VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

Phase shift is a good idea, I won't use it so often, but before big fights why not.
Air elementals are a cool idea, but in practice I don't think I could use them. I don't mind having monsters in melee and I would rather attack then spend mana on some distractions. I guess still better option than others.

What about chain lightning? I would need to invest a bit in conjuration but after tornado has cleared all the weak / medium enemy it could focus on the remaining one. Too bad I don't have any good source of rElec.

Re: CiP VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

Well, Air Elementals last a long time and are really quick, I was thinking you could summon them in advance, well before you jump in and tornado (You attack from the center out and they fly in and beat stuff up from the outside in)

And yes, Tornado->Chain lightning is I think the classic Air mage attack strategy.

I don't think I've ever based a chain lightning decision on whether or not I had rElec.

I can't find the demonic rune, has anything changed in 0.13? I've visited a billion pan levels (cleared 2 zigs in the meanwhile :) ) and still nothing. If it spawned in one and I missed is it lost?

Re: CiP VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

you can't lose it. The random nature makes it difficult to be sure if you've found a bug or just need more patience, but it's probably the latter - just keep checking those Pandemonium Lord vaults, and look for the special places (hellion island, eyes of draining).

Re: CiP VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

I did find the demonic rune and then... After clearing 2 zigs (90 demon lords and 71greater mummies :) ), including a lvl 26 mummies I thought I'm immortal, so when Ershkigal casted silence I decided to stay and fight. Unfortunately she then summoned some friends and paralized me. Without my 50 ev and 50 sh I went down quite quickly... :(
What did I learn? Nothing as usual, because all my strongest chars die to overconfidence, the ones not so strong are the ones that survives with me :o
At least I cleared my first (2) zigs.

Re: YASD VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

I consider Ereshkigal the most dangerous unique, she can heal herself for 50-230 hp in a single turn even under Silence effect.

An amulet of resist mutation seems like an odd choice for a bloodless vampire.

It does, but a point or two of rot is a lot less game-changing than most of the bad mutations.

The character had too little MR, Stasis can be very useful in extended

Re: YASD VpEn Okawaru -> Jiyva -> Makhleb

I used the rMut as default to don't have too much rot. I was swapping to Clarity for golden eyes, but anyway for confusion Vp can quaff potion. Indeed for a big fight I should have changed amulet but as I said I was over confident and nothing I had seemed "game-changing".
I never bring stasis with me because not haste and no teleport blink sounds like suicide. I actually never pick it up.
I thought Vp has a natural high MR and doesn't need more, I was sadly wrong...

Slain by a sixfirhy (9 damage)
... summoned by a shadow demon
... summoned by a shadow demon
... summoned by Ereshkigal

sounds like too many people showed up at the party.

Giant eyeballs have paralyze ability which does not check MR and is not stopped by Clarity. They are very common in Zig jelly floors.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
