I just cleared the Lair and lucky me, I found a +2 pair of Boots of Running at the bottom. I should point out that I plan on completing this run without ever learning any spells. I should also point out that I plan on abandoning Okawaru at some point so I can utilize The Shining One for the post game to get 15 runes. That's a ways off though, so I'd like some advice for the meantime.

- Which armour should I make my default? I have a few artefact armours and I'm torn between my +0 mottled dragon armour which gives me Str+3 and Dex+3 and my +0 plate armour which gives me rF+ and Dam+6. The plate armour obviously has better AC and GDR, but I don't know if the EV penalty is too high with my current armour skill. I don't know how high I'd need to pump my armour skill before I could use it without drawbacks. Also, I don't know if Str/Dex+3 or Dam+6 would be better anyway.

- How are my skills? What should I be pumping right now? I know I should get Axes to 20 to get the minimum delay, but what about after that?

- How do I know what's a good time to abandon Okawaru for TSO? I know I should leave the Crypt for after the switch, but what else should I leave untouched before switching? Should I wait for a specific kind of weapon or armour? I'd really like a CPA, but I don't know how common those are from Okawaru.

Ugh! I got Abyss'd by an Ogre Mage on Orc:4. What really sucks about it is that I got Abyss'd the exact same time turn I went down the stairs. I got absolutely boned and I'm kind of pissed off. -_-

Of course, I died in The Abyss. I survived the first floor, but got destroyed on the second. Those boots of running... gone. =(

I'd still like those questions answered for my own curiosity though.

I would avoid using those body armours long term because their enchantment levels are very low. +8 FDA would be much better. You have rF+ without the plate armour so I am not sure which one is better provided mottle dragon armour would increase your EV from 10 to 15 which is a very important increase.

If you wanted to go spellless, picking Oka was a very strange choice. It's best to pretend his weapon/armour gifts don't exist and evaluate him on his god abilities (and maybe ammo gifts) alone - they are good enough reason for picking him.

The plate armour would have been what to wear for now, then later on switch to a generic rF plate armour that you can enchant to +10 or an FDA. Since you wanted CPA, I'm not sure why you were worrying about your EV. The randart MDA wasn't going to give you anything over a mundane one because Str+3, Dex+3 isn't meaningful for this character. Even if it was Str+6, Dex+6 it still wouldn't be meaningful.

Why is it best to ignore his weapon/armour gifts?

I know Trog is a good choice for a spelless character to start with, but I've beaten the game with Trog and I wanted to use god(s) I haven't used before. Plus, I like the fact that Oka gives you armour and ammo as well as weapons.

Thanks for the advice on the MDA vs PA, but could you tell me what kind of armour skill I'd need before something like plate armour is wearable? I should point out, I barely understand the finer details of how armour works...

if you have 18 str and don't cast spells, use plate with 0 armour skill or more. Of course you want lots of armour skill to get AC when you get a chance.

Well, I started a new one and found an Amulet of Faith really early which got me to max piety really fast. Before I even found the Lair, Okawaru had given me my first gift which was a....

I am NOT getting abyss'd this time. Anyway, I just finished the Lair. Time to face them damn Orc Mines again...

Have you been trying to plow through all of Orc right after Lair? It might be wise to get down as far into the Dungeon as you feel comfortable, and maybe clear out some of Vaults before going to Orc:4 (in some cases Orc:3) You may well already know that, but I got murdered in Orc:4 about a dozen times before I realized it was a bad idea to go there as early as I had been.

Anyway, I don't think Psieye was telling you to just flat out ignore Oka's gifts, but don't take them into account when you're planning how to build your character, since the majority of his gifts are going to be useless to you and/or complete garbage. Oka should be taken because Heroism and Finesse are sick abilities, the gifts are just (sometimes) a bonus.

Exactly, the rare Oka gift that's actually good should be considered an unexpected boon, not a serious motivation for joining Okawaru-ism.

I see what you mean. I guess my main reason for joining him was because I wanted to use a melee God that wasn't Trog since I already used him. While Finesse and Heroism were nice, I was thinking in the long term of getting some nice gear and his gifts were the biggest draw for me. This may be a bad way of looking at him, but it's worked out as my current character has been gifted boots of running, crystal plate armour and a few other nice pieces of armour. The first two I will use until end game.

And yeah, I usually try all of Orc before I go to the Vaults. I find Vaults:1 has more consistently challenging enemies. Orc:4 can have some rough stuff, but it's mostly full of popcorn mobs.

Well, thanks to two potions of experience, I've hit 22 pretty early. Still waiting for an executioner's axe, but I finally got rMut and rCor so I can hit up the Slime Pits later. I found Mennas on D:21, so I might skip that floor for now. Will he resist my Holy Battleaxe? I've also accumulated some silver bolts for Orbs of Fire later. Not sure what skills I should be maxing right now though.

4 runes now. The only real question I have is when should I switch to TSO. I have a few more floors of the dungeon, zot and elf before I do the obvious TSO zones like crypt, tomb, abyss, hell and pandemonium. I was thinking it might be a good idea to switch to TSO before I tackle Elf. This might seem weird, but I feel like there's a good chance I'll get banished, in which case, TSO will help me get piety in the Abyss right? So I guess my plan is to use Okawaru through D:27 and Zot:4, (hopefully finding a cloak of preservation) and then switch to TSO before tackling Crypt, Elf, etc.

Does this sound all right? Also, skills? ^_^

I question that the -3 cloak of darkness is useful to you. the -2 gloves of dex maybe, maybe not.

Probably wear Shaolin over Breledos, and amulet of the Air over rMut except when you are actually being mutated.

I cleared out the Dungeon and I also cleared Zot in it's entirety. I found the Orb, but I left it alone, obviously. I was mostly clearing out Zot because my -4 Cloak of Darkness wasn't cutting it and I figured those damned Draconians could help me out since they usually drop them. It wasn't until the Orb Chamber that one finally dropped a runed cloak and it was another Darkness cloak. +2 though, so I'll take it. My AC is at 51 now, which is by far the highest it's ever been on any character I've made. I still have no means of conservation/preservation which is really a pet peeve of mine. I hate losing consumables, but I've been having them wasted this entire game. Grrr.

Anyway, it looks like it's time to switch to TSO, yeah? I'm gonna get some sleep for tonight, but when I do switch, any advice for waiting out Oka's wrath? I've never switched gods in any of my 5 victories, so it's a foreign concept to me. Where should I do it? How will I know when it's over? Should I continue through Crypt as I'm doing it?

Also, should I start enchanting this executioner's axe? It doesn't look like I'm going to find another one.

I would use 4-5 Scrolls of Enchant Weapon II on the Axe. They are guaranteed to work and you will be able to spend the rest on another axe if you are lucky to find one.

If you absolutely must, go dig a tiny corridor and sit in it. Abandon Oka but don't take up TSO yet and poke away at the few summons that can fit into that corridor. It's in poor taste though, just go clear out Crypt and keep playing while Oka is orbital dropping goons on your head. You're strong enough to deal with them.

No. But you have a holy battleaxe to plough through Crypt until you're ready to bless that drain exec axe into a holy one. He won't mind you holding the axe, he'll only take issue when you hit someone with it.

Oh shit, didn't realise he had a +8/+6 crossbow that can be blessed. I'm biased towards having a ranged weapon on a melee guy so I'd definitely vote for that. I'm not sure if it's optimal compared to getting a holy exec axe at the end.

I had resist corrosion on when I was using that axe and I didn't think I'd be using it for end game since I was waiting for an executioner's axe, so I didn't really care that it deteriorated. Although, I was surprised it did with rCor. I think it happened when I was fighting TRJ. Unless you were saying no comment, because I shouldn't really care that it's -4 since I can just enchant it? I was only saying it sucked since I have to burn more enchant scrolls on it. I've gotten it up to +7, +4 now so it won't corrode anymore. I also enchanted the crossbow. Here's my current dump.

55AC and 44 EV (when I put the ring of shaolin on). Awesome. I picked up another axe in the bottom of the Crypt. I think I know what you guys are gonna say, but I'm going to ask anyway.

Is the Obsidian Axe worth switching for? Initially, it seems like the answer would be no because it's only a broad axe which has a lower base damage rating, plus the whole curse thing which would be a pain if I needed my crossbow. Losing the holy brand also seems to make it not worth considering since holy is so important in the areas I'm about to hit up. Then again, it has a SICK enchant level and some other nice bonuses. The wiki says it causes mesmerization, but that isn't listed on the in game axe, so I don't know if that was removed in 12? Anyway, I think I know what you all will say, but which axe should I use?

+4 weapon still has 2% to be corroded. You would need +5 for corrosion immunity

And it would have been better to use a battleaxe of flaming or even freezing when fighting slimes as holy doesn't work on them. You are guaranteed battleaxes of freezing because frost giants.

Got my 5th rune from the Abyss. It was insane how easy it was with this character. Found it in no time, although I lost soooo many scrolls because I still have no conservation which is severely aggravating me.

Anyway. Any advice for Tomb with this character? Are Greater Mummies/Mummy Priests susceptible to silence? Because I was thinking I might be able to annihilate the majority of Tomb:3 with my scrolls of silence. This is probably a bad idea because of death curses though... I dunno. Looking for any advice for Tomb as I'm doing it right now.

Side question. I know you can die from stat loss, but you can only die from it if your stat drops below 0, right? If your stat drops below 0, do you die immediately, or do you have a certain amount of turns? Say, to quaff a potion of restore abilities?

Sorry for the triple post.

I just got down to Tomb:3 and I realized I haven't used any of TSO's abilities. It dawned on me that if I pop a scroll of silence, this will make me immune to tormenting for a short while, but I didn't know if I could hack through the mummies in time, even with cleaving. I was also worried about death curses, but if I summoned some divine allies, I could not only get more offensive power, but I could avoid some death curses too. With two rings of sustain abilities, and TSO giving me HP back on kills, I could survive...theoretically. The only downside is my axe might hit my allies and make clustered offense a pain. Grrr.

Anyway, Tomb is done and I have 6 runes. I'm so stupid because I resorted to my old stair dancing tactic to lure the greater mummies to the stairs for a quick melee kill, limiting their time to torment, but I never even once considered using my +8, +7 Holy Crossbow. That probably would have helped... I have to remember that weapon, because if I don't use it, then I wasted TSO's blessing.

I had one scary moment, where I stepped away from the Tomb:3 stairs and a summoned Hellwing cast Teleport Other on me. The thought of being randomly teleported on Tomb:3 was enough to make me pee myself. With sweat dripping down my brow, I made my way to the staircase and on the same turn I ascended to Tomb:2 I teleported. *Phew*

Anyway, Pan is next. I'm dangerously low on curing (only 2) but I should find tons in Pan. I always find Pan easy for some reason. This will be the time I get dropped on hellion island, I'm sure. I'm excited to finally be able to map out the Holy Pan floor now that I have TSO. I've never been able to see the whole floor without tucking my tail between my legs and bailing.

Pandemonium is done and I have 11 runes. Only the Hell branches are left. I also picked up a wand of Teleportation which makes my lack of conservation less of an issue. I've blown all my blinking scrolls thanks to spawning on Hellion Island and almost dying. (As I predicted in an earlier post)

Anyway, Hell shouldn't be too tough. I was surprised at how easily I stomped the Pan Lords. Gloorx Vloq was the only tough one as he tormented me twice in one turn. I fled and came back with a posse of angels. Other than that and Hellion Island, it was smooth sailing. Even Cerebov was a punk. This character is just way too tanky with 62 AC and 42 EV. All my armour is maximally enchanted and all my essential skills are maxed. I've been using the crossbow now and it's a lifesaver against fiends who are too far to safely charge into melee range. I'm confident in victory.

Initially I was thinking I might also to a Zig with this spelless character, but I just don't think I can do it. Maybe I could, but I'm not at all confident. I don't think I have enough consumables, nor the skill and situational awareness to really topple that sort of challenge. The only thing that would really scare me is a high level Mummy floor and I have no idea what I'd do if I came across one. How challenging would a Zig be with this character?

Well, I did a spell-less Zig as Na of Chei with slightly worse AC/EV so I am sure you can do it. I did use 2 Scrolls of Holy Word on mummy floor but you have angels + healing on kills which is much better IMHO.

Hmmm, you're tempting me into trying this. Angel's would be good for the mummy floors. I'll see how Hell goes and if it's easy breezy, then I might try a Zig.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

All 15 runes and Hell really wasn't much of a problem. Almost died in Cocytus:7 when I opened a door to a treasure vault and was rudely greeted by three ice fiends and some other baddies. Blindly teleported out of there, which could have been worse, but I ended up in a nook where I could recover. Other than that, I just kind of blew through all four branches after work tonight. It's painfully clear that the only thing that can really kill my character is irresistible stuff like torment and hellfire. Barring those two attacks, I don't fear anything.

So, now I feel like I want to try the Ziggurat. I know I could escape with the Orb without any problem, but the pride of beating a Ziggurat spelless is really tempting. So, since torment is my big problem, how common is it in Ziggurats? I know Mummy floors will be the big problem, but what about fiends and tormentors? I've beaten 4 Zigs before with a DeWz, but I don't remember if I saw any fiends since I had Necromutation on that character. I'm also very light on consumables as I STILL have no form of Conservation. I have about 6 fog scrolls, 1 silence, 1 recharging, 5 cure mutations, 10 curing and not much else of use. If I were to attempt this, what kind of strategy would I use for this character. For most floors, I'd feel confident just running in and hacking away. Even on Pan Lord floors, honestly.

I think I'm gonna go for it, but not tonight. I'd like some advice from experienced users on how to handle a Mummy floor should I come across one at the higher levels.

Hmm, good call. I have about 130 bolts of penetration, so I could definitely bring those along. Does it take a turn to change the arrows you have quivered?

Panlords floor can have torment-capable monsters and Hellions, I would not underestimate them. Also be sure to find Amulet of Stasis for jelly floors. Being paralyzed for 20+ turns on a floor is not fun, luckily I survived it, but you do not have Cloak of Preservation and thus have no rAcid.
