CIP -> YAVP: SpEn of Ash (first 15-rune win!)

After my first and only victory with a MiBe escaping with 3 runes, I decided to do the next most classic combo, Spriggan Enchanter. I've been following hyperbolic's guide, but now I'm at the point, after clearing Lair and Orc, that I'm not sure what to do next. I was hoping to get into some Earth magic so that I could take out things that cannot be hibernated easily, but sadly I've only found books of Fire.

I've been pretty unlucky with finding any decent equipment or scrolls. I have a few good short blades (+0,+3 dagger of flames, +2,+3 short blade of venom, +1,+5 dagger) and a robe of rC, though I can't switch them out since my current equipment is cursed. I unfortunately prayed over my stash, losing all my scrolls of remove curse. I also have only identified perhaps 4 or 5 different potions, and only have one identify scroll left.

Anyway, I'm floundering a little and was wondering if anyone had some tips. Thanks!

First of all, sustenance doesn't help a spriggan at all. I would probably wear protection, or poison resist in Lair/Spider. You should curse on either a ring or amulet for the skill boost. I'd do amulet, as you really won't need to swap them for quite a while. You might consider cursing both for a bigger skill boost; I definitely would, but YMMV. You should also curse your cloak on, as I think that'll be enough to give you a Stealth+Dodging bonus.

The Book of Power has Iron Shot; if you want earth, this is probably the spell you're headed for. It might be tough to memorize now, but quaff a potion of brilliance and it should be doable.

But what you need to train right now is spellcasting for hunger, unless you have an awesome food stash; Invisibility is worth casting for almost every fight from here to Zot:5 if it won't starve you. This is probably more important than Stealth.

You're carrying around too many stones+darts for this stage of the game; you don't have (and I wouldn't get) the skill to use them effectively against the monsters you're facing. Maybe carry 15 stones for the occasional jelly. You're also toting around too many curing + HW potions; try 3-4 of each max. As minmay pointed out here there's really no time you're likely to have a good reason to quaff five of any potion. So why risk them?

So far as strategy goes, earth is a fine diversification skill, if you have any decent earth spells available. You do, so it would work. But you aren't ready to diversify; you need more Spc, Stealth, probably even dodging and a little more Fighting. I'd probably do them in that order too. Furthermore, if you ever get access to controlled blink I think you'll find it much better than any offensive spell you're likely to pick up.

You should go finish the Lair (L8 is easier than Orc:4 most of the time, and I usually do it right after L:7.) Then head down through the dungeons to the entrance to Vaults, and clear to V:7. After that, clear Spider, and then Shoals. After that it's wide open; V:8 will be tough, but doable. Crypt will be tough, but doable. More dungeon might actually be easiest, but late dungeon varies a LOT based on vault selection.

I have read somewhere that it does not make any sense to curse less than 50% of jewelry so you should curse at least 2 of rings/amulets. Cursing just a single item will not do anything for you.

Thanks for the great advice. I actually did curse my conservation amulet before, only to see an acid blob a few levels later :(. I'll consider cursing it again though. As for the cloak, I was concerned that I would soon find a better cloak or a better robe (I have an rC+ one now BTW) because I have only one remove curse left. But, perhaps it's better to just curse what I have than to hold out for something better.

I do have control teleport in a book - I can read it with 17% failure. Should I get that and throw a few points into charms & translocations? Are there any other spells in the books I'm standing on that I should learn? (E.g, Enslavement, Mass Confusion, Call Imp, Mephetic Cloud, and Conjure Flame are all castable or close to it at this point.)

In order to be bound in armor or magic, you have to have at least half, rounding up, of the relevant slots cursed. For most, that's two jewellery slots and 3 armor.

A little bit further. I spent all my exp on Spellcasting (save for a few levels on shields after finding a buckler), though I'm still at #####.. hunger for Invisibility. Edit: oh crap, I just realized I forgot about my two shields manuals!

My main problem, as before, is that I'm not sure how to handle enemies that can See Invisible. For example, my current situation is as shown in the screenshot. I walked down to D:17 only to find myself surrounded by a circle of humans and Norris, all but one sleeping. I immediately exited the level, but I'm afraid that next time I go down there, Norris will wake up and I'll be toast. He has high MR, so I doubt I can EH him quickly enough, and his HD is high enough that Mephetic Cloud won't work. What does a stabber do at this stage of the game?

I think you should learn Iskenderun's Mystic Blast (from the Book of Power in your stash). It is surprisingly strong and hungerless.

And while you train Conjurations, I think you should do the Shoals, the Spiders Nest and Elf 1-2 (but not 3). These branches will be very easy, as none of the regulars can see invisible.

Note that demonic crawlers will make your life miserable in Spider as they have high MR and SInv. Fortunately, no monster in the game is immune to "sleep by boredom" - thousands of turns will be needed though. Also, be sure to have some way to fly (it helps with stealth anyway) in Shoals if you don't want the water to act as the SInv alarm system for everyone.

A minor side excursion into the land of numbers and spell hunger: the bars are logarithmically distributed, so the higher bars are much, much more nutrition per bar. The actual spellhunger you were experiencing on Invisibility at the start of this thread was about 386 per cast; now it's more like 242. To put that in perspective, a chunk (on a normal character) is 1000 nutrition, while a bread ration (on a spriggan) is 5900. A spriggan burns one point per movement under normal circumstances. So, before, a single ration would let you cast Invisibility 15 times; now, it lets you cast it 24 times.

I'd recommend taking it up to 20 or so before going back to Stealth; that'll bring invisibility's hunger down to 170, allowing for reasonably frequent casting.

MR also tends to be useless on a Spriggan by this point in the game; you're already extraordinarily resistant, and will only get more with more levels. Wear either the other protection or pois resist. I would suggest cursing on your amulet or other ring as well; might as well get +3-4 to all spell skills. Between Ashenzari's boost, and the robe of the Archmagi, you'll still be quite good at EH/Confuse/Enslave/Petrify(if you ever find the spell)ing everything without investing in Hexes for a while. Note, by the way, that Confuse and Enslave both have higher spell power caps, and so are now much harder to resist than EH. Tier 2 stabs become much more common later in the game; if you can't sleep it, confuse or enslave it.

You also have unIDed scrolls in your stash; you should readID those soon. They aren't doing you any good now.

Now for your specific question. A stabber hopes to be able to walk up and stab him on stealth alone (if you can find an elven cloak, that'll increase your stealth a bit, BTW) but that won't always happen. When you don't get a tier 1 stab, and can't EH/Confuse, there are several options: Enslavement is a good, often overlooked spell. Just because your target can resist you, doesn't mean the hydra next to him can. And that Hydra will do good damage to most critters, or at least keep it busy. You can also train a secondary line of offense (Iron shot, summon air elemental, sticky flame, summon scorpion, poison arrow, animate dead etc. all work nicely. A good Q.blade (especially with slaying) can be used as a simple melee alternative.) But your bread and butter is stealth and stabbing; if you can't handle a monster, consider avoiding it. Simply let it live. The above (Especially Enslave) can help with that as well. (I actually wouldn't take IMB; it'll be weak at your spell power. It would work but Sticky Flame, Summon Scorpions or Animate Dead are probably stronger for the same level+hungerness, if you do decide to get some extra offense now.)

In your case though, that's a nasty vault. You can make it through by either finding the stairs that comes down elsewhere, and going down it, or reading teleport and then descending. Then lure them away and deal with them one by one. Norris is quite tough, and though you might be able to take him with wands, enslavement, etc. I think your best bet is to leave him for now. In fact, at this point I would consider skipping Vaults until after Spider; I think Spider is likely to be safer than messing with Norris for now. If you are determined to carry on, you can almost certainly lure him away, and simply take the Vaults. Just be aware that he may be near the stairs when you come back.

That's not actually right in 0.11. Binding is figured on slots, not worn items, so you can't be bound in jewellery without 2 items bound, period.

Demonic crawlers aren't unstabbable; you can confuse them with a few tries, and they're really slow. They're a pain, but not that bad. I actually find the emperor scorps on Spider:5 much more trouble.

I can't remember if Ash identifies potions for you - but it looks like you have quite a few unidentified and several scrolls of identify, so you could do something about that.

I'm pretty good on spells now. I have Control Teleport, Controlled Blink, Haste, Passwall, and Petrify all castable, though I'm not really sure how best to use the first three. Under what conditions should I use each?

On the offensive side, I still haven't learned anything. I just found a book of Geomancy, so I was thinking of Stone Arrow and LRD. Are they worth it, or should I skip Stone Arrow and go straight for Iron Shot?

Nice spell kit! You now have enough spells to get a 3-runer; if you only want a three-runer, you can just skill Stealth, Dodging, Fighting, Hexes/Earth (for Petrify) and Spellcasting (for eventual hungerless Haste+Invis), ninja the orb, and win. Controlled Blink makes that fairly easy actually.

On the other hand, I like diversifying into offense at this point, so I have options. With the spells you have, I would definitely go Earth; it will also increase the spellpower of Petrify, allowing it to completely supercede EH in your toolkit. Stone Arrow is a good offense spell, and hungerless. I would grab both it and LRD, and train Spellcasting a few more levels for the slots for Iron Shot. On anything but a spriggan Iron Shot is clearly better than Stone arrow, but hungerless means a lot to spriggans. LRD has three uses: blowing your way into places you shouldn't be, smite-targetted wreckage of 'hard' monsters (like golums or bone dragons, for which you have no other answer), and AoE, smite-targetted damage. As you don't have any of the AoE Hexes spells yet, it should make your life a lot easier. OTOH, it is very noisy (can be heard from 15-20 squares away if no walls damp the noise) , which makes it a little tricky to decide when to use it. It's a good spell anyhow, and the first time you kill three boggarts from behind their summons, it will completely pay for those spell slots. Also note that petrifying monsters are 'hard', and fully petrified ones are harder still. Be careful with LCS and don't hit yourself though; it bypasses EV. (I once suicided a Merfolk with 7 runes from full health in Pan using LCD. I came down in the middle of a grating box. So I LCDed my way out... OUCH.)

Another excellent Earth spell to use for stabbing is Passwall; it takes a few turns to set up, but it can take you through a wall without giving the monster even a single stealth check to wake up. With Ash's monster location, it's as simple as Passwalling next to a stationary red-face for a guaranteed stab.

So far as how to use the buffs: Haste is like Invisibility, in that you really would like to spam it every fight but can't. You actually have an awkward relationship between them, as you can't both Invis and Haste without glow (even given enough food to make it a good idea.) In general, Haste should be used when stealth is less important, or you're dealing with see-invisible monsters. It lets you cast spells 33% faster, move 33% faster, etc. If you ever need to switch to emergency, "get out of here now" mode, Haste is often your best first move (even if invisible.) Haste will essentially make one-in-three blinks not allow the enemy to respond at all; extremely good. It also has much better synergy with LRD than Invis. ;)

Controlled Teleport and Blink are hungerless, and nearly silent (Blink particularly); use them to augment stabbing (IE all the time.) Whenever a monster is at the edge of LOS, backup, C'Tele+Blink. The noise happens at your starting location; it's completely silent where you land which will be much closer to the monster. Much less likely to wake it. (Just be careful to blink back if an alert herd of yaktaurs or stone giants comes into view after your blink.)

Controlled Blink is simply amazing; again, if it were hungerless, you would always use this. (Folks talk about Haste being OP; I think it's because they never tried C'Blink. :)) Instead, use it on all uniques/monsters-I-NEED-a-tier-1-stab-on. Again, it's silent on land, and nearly silent at current location. You can literally backup, CBlink, Stab without giving the monster the possibility of waking up. Insanely good, and insanely hunger inducing.

Petrify is like EH except: it has a higher power-cap so it can affect more monsters (like Confuse/Enslave, though your spellpower isn't as high yet), it takes a few turns to immobilize it for a tier-1 stab, and it makes monsters very vulnerable to LRD (great synergy; Petrify yaktaur, LRD it to blast the whole herd.) As you train Earth, use it in place of EH on anything that would be hard to EH, and you can spare a few turns while it petrifies.

At this point, I would train daggers to min delay (10; barely any skill left), Earth to Iron Shot castable, and Spellcasting to make room for it/get spells hungerless. Note that it is possible, and eventually desirable, to get Iron Shot, Haste and Invis all hungerless by raising spellcasting. (technically, only down to ten hunger if you use your current int, but by then you'll have raised int again.) Dodging would be another good skill to invest in at some point.

A note on armour: I noticed you're toting around a mottled dragon hide. First of all dragon Armour is lighter, so it'd be better to enchant promptly if you intend to use it. On the other hand... I would consider the Archmagi leagues ahead of MDA for a caster. Yes, MDA is great armour, but a free ring for EVERY spell class is amazing. The other robe you're carrying is worse yet on everybody but mummies. I would consider a robe of resistance roughly equal to Archmagi though, so if you find one (quite likely in Elf) you might want to switch.

A note on inventory management: I know you're using a stash in L:1. I'm one of the detractors from stashes on these fora; there are folks who prefer them (for more debate on the subject, check out: Potion of Experience woes and The Hunt for the Late-game Stash.) I remain convinced that an item is noticeably safer if I drop it right where I am (or at the corner of a room, if I'm particularly concerned, like for /ofpolymorph) than to drag it 3-4 levels to a stash. Let alone a dozen floors. Cold/fire attacks from random centaur warrior spawns, mottled dragon attacks etc. are much more common a danger than jellies. And if I'm stabbing, I don't care all that much if a hill giant picked up my potions of heal wounds; I'll put him to sleep and stab him before he uses them. (Note that in many games of doing this, I've had to hunt down monsters for my stuff twice I think; even that's not a big deal.)

Either way on stashes, never carry strategic items around with you (enchant foo, vorpalize, to a lesser extent recharging, curse scrolls for Ash, etc.) They will get destroyed, even with conservation, and I can afford to run back to where they are when I get that new shinier armour I'm waiting for. (Note that I will carry 1-2 recharging scrolls late-game, as I can't get to the dungeon reliably from Pan/Abyss.) I'd also drop the wand of enslavement, as you'll have much higher spellpower. I would burn a scroll of ID on that black potion.

Armour is quite reasonable, and likely to give you something useful. (Where likely is defined as ~50% of the time.) You might well get an ego buckler or hat. Or an ego robe. There's a smaller chance you get a randart, which could be terrible or great.

Jewellery might be nice, but won't be awesome. It'll give you a ring/amulet you don't have; unfortunately, there's a lot more pathetic ones in that category than good ones.

Wand is probably your best bet. You've got a good change of getting one of the great three, any of which would be a boon. (Hasting least, as you do have Haste for most situations.) But it's a fairly close call between this and armour.

Gold wins out hands down if there's anything you want to buy but can't afford; otherwise, it's a gamble.

Thanks. I went with armour (again) since I am starting to need some elemental resistances and got a useless item (again) - this time, a -4 cloak of rF+ Acc+2. Both this and my last acquirement were terrible, cursed items. Does Ash have something to do with this? I can see them being auto-cursed, but it also seems to make them have very awful enchantments.

Ash will make them autocursed, but only the RNG is responsible for them being pathetic. :) That cloak is situationally useful; I'd wear it facing dragons/hellknights/firegiants if I had the chance to switch. Obviously a ring would be better, but you haven't had much luck there.

In general though, a nonAsh Spriggan can usually run from Mennas just fine regardless, and you probably wouldn't have woke him first turn he came in sight anyhow.

Leave him and come back in 5-10000 turns. Go clear 7-8 other levels, and when you come back he probably will be. Note that Boris is probably worth using wands of digging to construct a passwallable stab zone, if one doesn't exist already.

You won't need to get Earth to 27 to cast shatter effectively. Probably a better use for that XP is Evocations (eventually to 27), and pick up a Crystal Ball of Energy. If you're going for 15 runes, you'll have plenty of XP to max earth later, if you need more spellpower. Stoneskin's a useful spell, and with all your Earth skill you might as well have it, if you have the slots. Necromutation is unnecessary, but if you run out of other places to put XP, it could be nice. Maybe either Death's Door or Revivification as an emergency button. Or you could train summoning for Mass Abjuration and Demonic Horde (use like butterflies that can kill stone giants.) Shatter has bad synergy with most high damage summons, but for a butterfly spell it doesn't matter.

If you're training up earth still further, keep and eye out for LCS. It's higher accuracy and damage and hunger than Iron Shot, but otherwise the same. If you find any good +Int artifacts to lower hunger, you might want to use it instead of Iron shot in general.

At this point you could drop stone arrow; Iron shot's more efficient.

I don't think that's true. The wiki disagrees, and my experience backs that up. Whenever I try to controlled blink next to a monster, it usually wakes up.

The noise is calculated and created after the spell is complete, so at your destination. Noise is based on spell level and school, but some spells carry a modifier. (In this case, a -4 modifier so controlled blink makes noise like a level 3 spell)

Another update. Finished Vaults, Crypt, Abyss, and Slime, so now I'm on to the hard runes. Pan doesn't seem so bad, but I hesitate since I only have once chance to get each rune. I've heard the Hells are hard, and I'm afraid of Tomb due to everyone else's warnings.

So far I've only stuck with Earth magic. I grabbed LCS, though I'm not sure it's really all that better than Iron Shot. It hits slightly harder but has hunger cost, has shorter range, and costs 2 more MP. I might ditch it. For replacements, Darkness seems somewhat useful for ninja-ing and uses hexes, which I already have. Otherwise, it seems like I'll only have XP for Necromancy or Summonings, not both. Dispel Undead seems useful for Tomb since it's silent, but I'm not sure it will be very strong. Mass Abjuration and Demonic Horde also seem useful, but getting Summoning up to 10 seems like a lot of work, and I wonder if dumping that XP into conjurations to get Iron Shot stronger is a better value.

I still try to stab when I can, but whenever something wakes up, or if I know I'm going up against a high-MR enemy, I go straight for Iron Shot. It's much easier than trying to get it to petrify.

And that's that! Pan was challenging since I knew I had one chance for each rune, but it wasn't very difficult with apportation. If the Pan lord was guarding it, just make some noise, have him wander away, and grab the rune while he isn't looking. I took out Mnoleg since he was easy and avoided the rest. After that, I got Necromutation, and the hells were a breeze. Shatter-ninja'd the runes (though I killed Ereshkigal for fun since I had Necromutation) and then the Tomb was also pretty easy with Necormutation and Shatter.

I found that the game gets significantly easier after Orc! Of the four times I've ever gotten past Orc:4, one (SpEn) died soon after, one (MiBe) stupidly died from Nikola, one ascended with three runes (MiBe) and one ascended with all fifteen (this one). In the beginning, I feel like I can die at any time due to some random event. After Orc, at least with a MiBe and SpEn, I had plenty of buffer to avoid stupid deaths.

Thanks a ton to byrel, who gave me great advice on the difficult beginning.

Congrats. Shatter-ninjaing is truly a fun experience. How was Tomb for you?

Also, I find it strange how low your skills are. Not that they're too low, or anything, but my SpEn of Ash had seven fulled maxed (27) skills when I escaped with 15 runes and I had almost maxed an eighth. That's without Ash's skill boosting too. Maybe I got lucky with mobs that give high experience.

Tomb was easy - Necromutation took care of most curses, and Shatter took care of groups. I also skipped the "welcome party" of Tomb:2, and stair danced Tomb:3 with Shatter. I don't know how I would have done it without Necromutation though.

As for the skills, I didn't feel the need any more skill levels. I put a bunch in Charms thinking I would get Death's Door, but otherwise I dumped exp into Necromancy and Conjurations since I had nothing better to spend it on.

For some skills to allow you to open up a swap slot. I'll often train a couple levels extra on my spellskills when I'm running out things to XP, so I can uncurse a ring or amulet slot. Of course, I don't
(intentionally) take them to 27, as by then you probably don't need two swap slots,

Just because things were leveling so fast that I was running out of thinge to level. I actually ran out of things to level because I had spellcasting, earth magic, stabbing, stealth, dodging, fighting and evocations almost at 27, so I just uncursed my hear for ease of use and topped off those skills. Plus i had all my support stuff like charms and what not hogh enlugh to be almost perfectly castable. I ended up almost maxing traps and doors because I couldnt think of anythong else to level.
