YAVP: VpEn of Makhleb, Tornado Demon

Not sure what to do with the original post, so I'll just bump it down below the YAVP.

I made it out! Had some tense moments in Hell vs. the end mobs. I used Tornado FAR, FAR more than Ice Storm. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could have skipped Ice Storm altogether and been just fine. Can't say the same of my DDEE and Shatter/Fire Storm. Now that I've tried all four level 9 spells, I think Tornado is my favorite. Shatter is just too situational. Since Tornado took care of any mobs next to me, I didn't often have to worry about Ice Storm's like of smite targeting.

I have a LOT of turns because I would spend thousands waiting for my stats to heal. For some reason I ran out of restore abilities early and since I spent the endgame Bloodless, they didn't regenerate naturally. So I'd drink a bunch of blood, wait, wait, wait...

I've been wanting to play a Vampire for some time but been mostly unsuccessful. After about five-six poor starts, here's one that seems to be surviving:

My original goal was to make an Air Elementalist and try Tornado, since in the past I have used and abused both Fire Storm and Shatter. However, I had a lot of trouble surviving with early game AEs so I started Ne instead. Now I'm hitting a wall where most of the enemies I find are too hard for me, I don't have (m)any spells at my disposal, and I'm not sure what to train. Been trying to go stabby and it works decent, but I still get torn apart by packs of yaks/elephants and now trolls/centaurs/giants/cyclops/dragons in the Vault area. I've finished Orc, most of Lair:8, and found the Vault entrance at D:16. I ventured into Snake Pit while Bloodless -- BIG mistake. I almost died while constricted by an Anaconda and surrounded (scroll of blinking didn't work... is it a change in 0.11?)

I have access to some spellbooks but no real nukes except Fireball, which I am trying to avoid. Some summoning (Shadow Creatures) but it seems tedious and robs me of experience. I've never played pure melee and I've only once tried a SpEn stabber. I hope to eventually beat extended + zigs. So what should I train/do next?

You need some means of killing stuff. Stabbing is not sufficient without spells that let you render enemies stabbable. If there's a weapon of pain available somewhere, get it regardless of the base type. Summoning is ok - it sucks your xp, but you don't need that much to succeed with it anyway (and can switch to Sif around level 20, as Makhleb's wrath is relatively gentle).

But in the short term, you need an "oh shit!" button. Makhleb's servants are great for this with around ~10 invocations. Just be sure to have an escape option ready in the event the greater demon spawns hostile.

That's the exact problem -- some means of killing stuff. Whittling away a giant with a dagger and Vampiric Draining might work when there's only one in a hallway, but not when there are several other enemies around. I am planning on staying Makhleb so I can go Bloodless in the endgame. I was thinking... perhaps I should train Long Blades to 14 and use a scimitar with draining/pain brand? I can buy an artefact book with Excruciating Wounds from Orc.

But keep in mind that I'm trying to avoid Fire and Earth since I've done them both before and I want to try Tornado. Other than the aforementioned book in Orc, there's also the Necromicon, but nothing else of use, really. I have a terrible Conjurations aptitude so I won't be able to get Ice Storm from Annihilations working anytime soon.

Decided to spend the money and get the Excruciating Wounds book and train Long Blades, then stumbled across a Bazaar and bought the books of Wizardry and of the Sky. Looks like I have some new tools at my disposal! Agony, Lightning Bolt, Airstrike and eventually my goal of Tornado. And Haste. Wizardry is such a good book. :)

Well... walked around a corner in Vaults and ran smack into Mennas. He was one square away from me and I had no teleportation or blinking scrolls left (none in my stash either). It was a short attempt at escaping, swiftness, attempting to blink when not silenced... sigh.

Gah, I should have thought of the ring? I wonder if it really would have worked in time, though? I had something like 12 moves. No source of haste, did use Swiftness but since he hasted himself it wasn't enough. Bat form would have been overloaded.

EDIT: My new vampire is discovering the joys of Ensorcelled Hibernation. Why oh why did I not know of this before? :D I'll post again here when/if I hit a wall.

Well, it depends on your evo skill: with 0 the success rate for a teleportation ring is about 70%. Considering the teleportation delay, using it to escape would have been risky but still a decent way to try to survive (at least, better than move away at 1.0 speed).

Bat form could be a better way to run away: if you had in the inventory a large stack of item of same type (e.g. blood potions) you could have drop it in 0.8 turn for each stack until you weren't overload - a probably faster and most reliably way to escape.


edit: En's starting book is very strong - if you are able to escape the (few) threats who can't be confused/hibernated/invis-stabbed you can practically count only on it for a 3 runes victory (excluding zot:5).
If you hit a wall, you're probably training wrongly your skills.

I feel so dense -- I have always avoided teleportation rings except for when I can control them. In those cases, I've worn a ring and waited the many turns it takes to kick in randomly. I didn't know it could be evoked at all!

Anyway, my one-hour stint with a VpNe --> Hibernating Stabber ended when I got overly cocky and died to two berserk killer bees. :(

I've had a few close calls, like getting sandwiched in between Mara/Donald/Nikola/Roxanne in the Swamp, and being cast into the Abyss TWICE by low-level mobs, but overall I feel far more confident in my ability to kill things.

I've been trying to work on my defenses a bit, as the stabbing strategy is going very well. I love how Stealth works... I have found myself in close quarters several times. For example, a random Abyss teleport while I was at XL:14 landing me two squares from an ancient lich. I simply walked away. Same thing with Mara. So, should I train...

...Invocations, to help with Makhleb emergencies?
...Evocations, to help with the ring of teleportation and eventual air fan and staff of channeling use? (I have both)
...Short Blades to 14, to improve the sabre? My understanding is that I need dex*(1 + stabbing skill) above 600 for it to stab better than a dagger? I have War Chants available.
...Long Blades, for more reliable damage output against things I can't stab?
...Air to 27, to cast Tornado? I have the Book of the Sky
...Stealth or Stabbing, to continue playing up my strengths?
...Fighting for some extra HP?
...Charms for Haste? Though I have a wand and potions, it's always nice...
...Traps and Doors, because... never mind. ;)

Overall Invisibility, something I'm never really used in the past (even in potion form), seems to be INCREDIBLY useful. It's the best method for dealing with centaur/yaktaur packs, as one cast and they are left shooting each other. I also discovered how much it helps with successful stabbing.

I'm planning on dropping Tukima's Dance once I need the spell slots. It was interesting to try, but I don't want to carry around lots of extra weapons with my low Str. I have the following books:

You really didn't need a way to kill things through methods other than stabbing. You have one now with airstrike, though, which doesn't hurt but just isn't necessary. What you need is a way to kill things through stabbing (check) and a way to avoid things that you can't stab, preferably this way will allow you to steal runes and the orb as well. This is best achieved through 12ish Charms+Haste+lowlevel buffs and 15ish Translocations+Controlled Blink+Control Teleport+Apportation+Phase Shift.

A rule of thumb for methods of killing things that can be useful is two ways of doing so that don't interfere with each other. Like you want melee+frequent use of Makhleb invocations, ranged combat+melee combat, melee combat+nemelex cards, elyvilon+earth conjurations on a DDHe. As an enchanter, stabbing+good running away is totally sufficient, stabbing+good running away+damage spells is convenient, and stabbing+good melee+good running away+damage spells is spreading out too much.

So in conclusion get Haste, some Fighting (5ish?), some Stealth (say 20), some more Fighting, and don't forget to eventually get some Translocations.
Stabbing is useful to about 15 in my experience, at least with daggers, beyond that the damage increase is useless and, if I remmeber correctly, virtually non-existent.

Is this assuming a 3-runer? What about for long term prospects, like Extended with Tornado? I haven't done stealthy extended, but I was under the impression that at some point Stabbing doesn't hold up (i.e. versus creatures with high MR and see invisible, etc)

Yes, this holds up for extended. Stabbing whatever you can and running away from what you can't, coupled with ninja strategies for the runes, is a viable plan for getting 15 runes. Tomb:3 is a little challenging, Tomb 1-2 are easy (though getting Dispel Undead won't hurt), Pan is a piece of cake, the Hells are managable just fine, you can hopefully stab TRJ on Slime:6, the Abyss is trivial. Don't expect to stab everything or even close to everything, though!
This does not apply to ziggurats. Getting down to 27 with just this strategy is significantly harder than just Tornadoing your way through.

Dagger. Use this formula:
A successful stab with a short blade increases your damage from dam to (dam+bonus)*mult, where bonus depends on your dex and stab skill and is capped at 30, and mult depends on your stab skill and the type of stab (sleep/paralysis is best). Non-short blades don't get a bonus and have lower mult. Daggers get bonus doubled, so use one of those.
If you are using short blades, stab damage bonus is (DEX * (stabbing skill + 1)) / 5, halved if you are not wielding a dagger, and then put through a stepdown function (halve the part over 10, then halve the part over 20, then cap at 30).

I've done some calculations assuming that damage from the dagger hit is 4 and 7 from the sabre:

stab from the dagger is 4*[(14*(12+1))/5]*mult=145.6*mult
stab from the sabre 7*[(14*(12+1))/5/2]*mult=127.4*mult

where mult depends on type of stab (sleep, conf, wandering) and stabbing skill which don't change for dagger/sabre changes, and I use way too many () and probably make mistakes. :P

Surely Freezing Cloud will only take 6 of the 7 slots you have? Keep the Invisibility spell. By the way, Bullseye takes a lot of investment isn't very good, don't use Bullseye. I'd stick with a Fighting 5 -> Stealth 20 -> Fighting 10 plan, neither the cloak nor the shield should affect this character.
Sure Blade is only very good if you are actually fighting a lot in melee with a short blade. I assume you are trying to get a stab in on most enemies, and use Airstrike on the dangerous ones that wake up. The enemies you are capable of meleeing with the dagger are harmless anyway. However, you have 7 free slots, why do you need to amnesia something at all right now? But I agree that if you do decide to clear slots up for some useful spell, Sure Blade should be one of the first to go, and along with that I'd sacrifice Shock. Flight only has limited use after Shoals/Swamp, too.

Just thinking ahead regarding spells... I forgot that I had Shock. I think if I drop Sure Blade I'll have enough to pick up Regeneration and Freezing Cloud both. Airstrike and Summon Elemental both have been necessary for a variety of enemies that either don't/won't sleep and/or have high MR or See Invisible. Flight saved my bacon in the Abyss twice. Without it I surely would have lost at that point in the game.

Flight is neat in the Abyss but Batform is even better in my experience... the speed boost is invaluable. Of course this is even more of a concern for low-level vamps.

I haven't used Batform at all this game... in the past, it's given me trouble since I become overburdened. I'm only carrying about 200 aum, but at Str 2...

Overloaded batform is the same speed as swift normal vampire, and burdened batform is the same as not-burdened batform (which is spriggan speed).

You multiplied regular damage with the bonus instead of summing them up and missed the stepdown function part. Pre-stepdown bonus will be 14*(12+1)/5 = 36.4 for the dagger and 36.4/2 = 18.2 for the sabre. Applying stepdown function turns these bonuses into 20+((36.4-10)/2-10)/2 = 21.6 and 10+(18.2-10)/2 = 14.1 respectively.
So, the resulting stabbing damage for dagger will be (4+21.6)*mult = 25.6*mult and (7+14.1)*mult = 21.1*mult. Obviously, plain damage numbers are not 4 and 7: these calcualtions don't include the influence of short blades skill, weapon enchantments/egos and slaying on them. And i don't know which blade will win the stabbing competition in the end. The best way to check it is just testing in wizmode.

Speaking of stabbing tools, i suggest learning Passwall: after a successful use, you'll be undetected for 1 turn, so you can just suddenly appear near a monster or significantly lower the number of stealth checks. It's also a situational escape tool.
Another good stabbing trick is catching the enemy in a net. This works on any substantial, non-flying (levitating is okay), non-slime/jelly and not larger than "large" foes. You'll be surprised by the number (and strength) of creatures susceptible to netstabbing. But, of course, you need to hit them with your net first, so this method requires some Throwing skill investment and an easy-to-learn Portal Projectile spell.
For the TRJ tip look into my signature. That cheater eyeball can paralyse EVERYTHING without stasis in its sight, and there's usually one of them in the Slime:6 vault. Beware of the slimes popping out of their king.

I thought of Passwall, and it is a great escape tool! But at this point, I don't have ANY Transmutation/Earth so I'm not sure if it's worth the exp at the moment. I finally got Tornado working! I also satisfied the requirements of a Treasure Trove to find a bunch of scrolls (boring) and two wands of heal wounds (exciting!) inside. I've received an unusual number of recharge scrolls this game it seems, probably about 10. I dove through D:27 and then cleared Vault for my first rune. Full dump:

EDIT: I'm starting to feel quite tough. Just took out Mara, Mennas, and everything else that I'd left behind in various levels. Found a +4, +3 vampiric quick blade! in the Hall of Blades and a +4, +4 demon blade of electrocution from Mara. I wonder if I should branch out into Long Blades so I have something when the enemy gets up close and personal? I really like my Wiz Str+3 ring, so for the other slot, should I wear +4 evasion, +4 protection, or +5 Int? Using Int for now.

EDIT2: Is the staff of air as amazing as the staff of earth for general fighting? With my DDEE, the staff of earth felt incredibly good. Not sure if the staff of air holds up though since it's bypassed versus possible resistance vs. pure physical?

So I'm getting ready to venture in to Pan, but I thought I'd try Zot a bit for the XP. I had an extremely close call with Tiamat:

I burned about 16 charges of heal wounds... I think about eight of those were in a row as I struggled to get from 7 HP to about 50-60. It lists 27 damage from the Trident, but with tail-slaps I went from 60ish to 27 to 7 in two hits. I had no mana left (dumb) and no blinking or other methods of one-turn escape.

Questions on spells: Are Airstrike, Freezing Cloud and Regeneration (I expect to be bloodless often now) worth keeping? Or Summon Elemental, even? I'm not sure what to replace them with. Orb of Destruction (though my conjurations is pitiful) is one that comes to mind, or maybe the full Deflect instead of Repel Missiles. IMB? Darkness? Ice Storm someday? How many tiles can Passwall cover with no Transmutation/Earth skill?

As was mentioned earlier in this thread, you really shouldn't be using Bullseye. EV is a much more useful defensive stat than SH. Get a buckler or shield of resistance.

Makhleb and careful play should be all the healing you need - ditch regeneration. Airstrike is very useful for sniping the occasional giant eyeball that hides behind the hoards of zig monsters. I would trade freezing cloud for bolt of cold sometime soon.

Go for deflect missiles only if you can spare the spell slots. IMB is a bad spell. Darkness won't help this character if you're transitioning to big explosion spells... but it could be useful for playing LOS games in zigs. I've never tried it. Passwall is pretty useless without earth skill. Summon Elemental can probably go, though I do love me some air elemental spam.

There might not enough XP left in the game for you to get ice storm castable, unless you're willing to grind pan. But it's much safer than tornado in a zig. You're also going to want more fighting/dodge/armor/evo before you zig.

Been using Bullseye since Slime, but I can probably switch it out. A single yellow draconian in Zot ruined ALL of my equipment, so I was happy to have at least something that didn't get destroyed. I was low on mana, fighting with my demon blade, and ended up with a -4 cloak of darkness, -2 boots of stealth and -2 gauntlets of strength. Grrr... and then I realized I should have been wearing resist corrosion...

Ice Storm should be doable easily enough if not for the -3 Conjurations, I think. There's a lot of experience to be had in just normal Pan travels, Tomb, and the Hells. Darkness sounded interesting just because of the few times I've had to teleport out of danger in the past and would have liked a covering. But if it doesn't last long enough for my mana to regen I guess it doesn't matter much.

I typically haven't gone to Zot at all until I have Fire Storm working, so I didn't realize the danger until it was too late.

Actually, most of those items were already +1/+2 too. Seems he corrupted at every hit. :lol:

I made it through Slime mostly unscathed, so it's really my fault for not thinking ahead and bringing rCorr.

I made it through Tomb... it was a bit tough, but doable. Using Shatter + Mass Abjuration on my DDEE was significantly easier than Tornado! I had to run out a few times for blood pots. By the time I was done, I had mastered Air Magic and boosted Spellcasting to 24. I picked up:

My guess is no... it gives me +1 EV/SH (due to Dex I think) but something like -6 AC and less GDR. But maybe the Int bonus is worth it? Tough call, I would appreciate feedback.

Autumn Katana is cool but not particularly useful for your dude. Vampires have great natural MR for resisting confusion, and you're going to want a staff of cold/air equipped while you drop ice storm/tornado. Keep it around if you don't have a clarity amulet. If you're still using a demon blade for melee, the katana is slightly better.

Keep the MDA. You're going to be nearly always bloodless from here on out, so the troll regen does nothing and the int doesn't make up for the loss of AC.

It probably would've been better to turn off air magic at ~24 and use that XP for conj/ice, but it's your call.

Thanks for the tips. I was still using the demon blade, so the Katana seemed like a good switch. Regarding the Air Magic... even with Wizardry I had a poor success rate for Tornado, but since I wasn't wearing Wizardry while in Tomb (2x Ring of Sustain Attributes instead) I couldn't watch the progression. I think I have about a 2% fail now. Tornado is working well enough that I was considering skipping Ice Storm and focusing more on melee, but we'll see...

Just made it through Holy Pan. It was an absolute cakewalk. Chain Lightning took care of Daevas and Pearl Dragons like nothing else, Orb of Destruction took out the Silver Star and Tornado destroyed everything else. There was plenty of blood to regenerate, so no trouble there. The rewards included two useless artefact shields (cursed -7 etc), a pearl dragon armour, and lots of exp! I'm now working on getting Ice Storm castable by Zigs using Pan experience. I haven't scummed at all, but so far I've only found the demonic rune on Hellion island and no Pan lords.

High Evocations + Staff of Air is a decent melee weapon too.

Just curious... I never seem to have trouble getting enough XP. Another played suggested saving Air Magic XP for Conj/Ice. I just found and killed my last "big" Pan Lord and now have 11 runes with Ice Storm castable at 4%. I didn't "grind" Pan, but it took:

The only thing I'd really like to change about my spell set is swapping out Freezing Cloud for Mass Abjuration. Too bad I haven't found it. I kinda stopped picking up books, though, so that may be part of the trouble.

I made it out! Had some tense moments in Hell vs. the end mobs. I used Tornado FAR, FAR more than Ice Storm. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could have skipped Ice Storm altogether and been just fine. Can't say the same of my DDEE and Shatter/Fire Storm. Now that I've tried all four level 9 spells, I think Tornado is my favorite. Shatter is just too situational. Since Tornado took care of any mobs next to me, I didn't often have to worry about Ice Storm's like of smite targeting. Most of the end game involved casting Tornado and then standing in one spot evoking the staff of channeling. The hardest mobs were Hell Sentinels as I couldn't kill them quickly at all (multiple OODs or many turns in Tornado necessary)

I have a LOT of turns because I would spend thousands waiting for my stats to heal. For some reason I ran out of restore abilities early and since I spent the endgame Bloodless, they didn't regenerate naturally. So I'd drink a bunch of blood, wait, wait, wait...
