CIP (now YAVP): DEWz of Vehu, 15-runer

After winning my first game a little over a month ago I once again went with a DeWz of Vehumet since that combination was so succesful for me the last time. It's working out pretty well this time too: I've got 4 runes and I'm currently pretty much steamrolling through the game. Unless I royally screw up somewhere winning shouldn't be too difficult. However, I've already done that, so this time I'm interested in checking out some post-game content (i.e. Hells, Pandemonium, Abyss scumming, Tomb and/or Ziggurat (found 1 zig portal so far)). I'm not necessarily going for a 15-runer, but I want to see how far I can come. Since I have barely any experience with the post-game I'd like to get some tips on what I still need before I'm ready to face them in terms of items, skills, spells, etc.

As you can see, so far I've gotten down to D:23 so there's still some time to train skills. My next planned move is to clear the Vestibule to have a more convenient stash. I haven't checked, but I believe I have access to pretty much any spell in the game save for those in the Necronomicon, which annoyingly still puts me on a food clock, though abandoning Vehumet to get it seems like a terrible idea. Resistance-wise I can arrange most of it, though only a few at a time, which might be a problem for some of the branches.

Also: what would be the approximate recommended order to go about tackling the endgame? Pan -> Hells -> Tomb -> Zig? Something else? And is Abyss scumming worth it? Any and all advice is welcome.

From what I've heard, that's about the order recommended, although you can do the Ziggurat whenever you want.

Why would you scum Abyss? If it's just to grind skills or look for consumables, you'd be better off with Pan.

Might as well finish the Dungeon and Zot for all the free xp first.

Tomb first might be good, actually. You have Haste, Controlled Blink, and Crystal Spear. That's plenty to kill everything as long as you're careful and you take it slow. You'll burn through a lot of food and potions, but that's not actually any sort of problem. Haste up to fight absolutely anything, and never allow more than one mummy priest or greater mummy on the screen at once if you can help it. Usually Controlled Blink will help with that. Feed some xp into stealth first, though; you can't really take it slow if you wake up and end up pulling everything on the level. Perfectly safe, if done right, and you get quite a lot of loot at the end.

Not much in Pan is likely to actually threaten you, but it won't be very rewarding either. Take it out whenever. You can rest reasonably safely in cleared areas, so a buff character like this is unlikely to get into any trouble. The only point of real risk is entering a new level through a portal, since occasionally it dumps you into a dangerous vault, but you've got Controlled Blink so as long as you buff up before going through a portal there shouldn't be any problems. If ever you find yourself in a sketchy situation, remember that you can just bail through the exit portal of any level but the four unique Rune levels and you haven't actually missed out on anything.

Hell is always tricky, but you've already got Fire Storm up and you're well on the way to having enough evocations for the crystal ball of energy to be more-or-less usable. Probably pick up Regeneration somewhere, it saves a whole lot of turns in Hell and in Tomb since you'll end up at half health rather frequently. Saving turns in Hell means you get fewer trash monsters airdropped onto you.

The Abyss is a place you grind only when you're looking for the Rune. Once you find the Rune, that's the game's cue that it uses to tell you to stop grinding the Abyss. A post-endgame character rarely benefits enough from a gratuitous Abyss run to justify the fun you won't be having doing it.

I recommend a magic staff over every other weapon listed, probably a staff of fire. You get a damage bonus with your spells, a pip of useful resistance, and you can even kill minor fodder with it if you feel so inclined.

Cleared the rest of the main dungeon, the Vestibule, Zot 1-4 and just got my first ever Abyssal rune. Took me 3 trips and just under 6000 turns total, which doesn't seem too bad. I must say the stealth approach worked pretty well. Saved me quite a few encounters. Also managed to do it without picking up any mutations, which is nice.

Unfortunately, I still don't have a staff of fire, a helm of see invisble or a necronomicon. Oh well. I did find a book with Summon Dragon, so I'm training Summonings again. I guess Pandemonium is next. Some questions:

- What is a good point to leave a Ziggurat? I'm pretty sure I can't handle all 27 floors of one, so what's a good benchmark? If the last floor was a little tough? If you haven't seen any problematic themes (e.g. mummy) in a while?
- Is Projected Noise a good approach for dangerous zig floors?
- What strategy should I use for the pan lords? Especially Cerebov seems problematic with his massive amount of HP and his rF+++. The others I can hopefully firestorm to death, but that will draw their respective bodyguards to me just when I've about run out of MP. How safe is trying to ninja the runes (I learned apportation just in case)?
- Any other general tips for Pandemonium?

Ninja the runes, it's safer. Killing pan lords is really only an if you want to sort of thing. Zig can be hard to get out of, but it is much easier to bail with c blink. Just be extra careful.

Found the demonic rune and have just landed on a Mnoleg floor. The vault in question is evilmike_mnoleg_eyes. With three potential rune locations, it seems like a bad idea to try to cTele in and out to ninja the thing like you could on his other two vaults. So I guess I'm reduced to a full-scale frontal assult? Or is there a better tactic?

Also, what amulet would be best to wear for this level: clarity or rMut? Personally I'd say the former, as mutations can be fixed (I've got two potions in my stash), whereas confusion can be deadly. Also, it makes it safer to use the crystall ball. But if you guys have any good reasons for going with rMut I'm all ears.

Wear rmut, swap to clarity if you want to use cboe. Fire storm all the dudes then pick up the rune, nothing hard about that.

The frontal assault turned out to be less perilous than I feared, and thanks to rMut I didn't even pick up a mutation. Thanks for the tip. 7 runes down, 8 to go. The next level after Mnoleg was evilmike_holy_pan and good god is that level tedious. One just that one level I had to kill 45 shedu, 43 angels, 42 apis, 29 phoenixes, 27 daevas, 26 cherubim, 21 paladins, 2 pearl dragons, a seraph and a partridge in a pear tree... though that last one might just have been a phoenix in disguise. Don't get me wrong, it makes for good experience, but at some point I was starting to get the feeling that I'd run out of Verhumet piety before I'd cleared the level (I'm already down to 5 out of 6 stars. Stupid god not appreciating me killing the forces of heaven *grumble* ungrateful in my day...). Anyway, after finally finishing that little gauntlet I take the portal out, which lands me here:

Well, *redacted* me. The Pan lord with the most hit points that's must immune to my main attack and I get to face him without having the time to prepare. This is going to end well... for Cerebov, that is. So, let's look at my options:

  1. Leeeroooy Jeenkins! This would presumably get me murdered in record time.
  2. Read teleport scroll. put on cTele ring. read scroll of magic mapping. Try to survive somehow until teleport kicks in. Teleport to one of: the rune location. one of the treasure pillars. Some part of the level far away from the vault.
  3. cBlink to the square behind the pillar to the far right of Cerebov. Either keep running or switch to option 2 now that I'm (hopefully) not being blasted from mutiple sides.
  4. Alternative suggestions are most welcome

Either of these sound good. I don't recognize the vault due to the tiles screenshot, but if you have cblink, you shouldn't die.

EDIT: After looking at the chardump (Thanks!), you would need 2 cblinks and a single move to grab the rune. I would check the .des file to make sure, though.

The vault is evilmike_cerebov_lava, rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise. Getting to the rune should indeed be a matter of blinking just to the right of metal wall below Cerebov, then into the rune chamber next to the brimstone fiend and moving to the rune. This does put me next to a brimstone fiend for several turns wile I pick up the rune and prepare to teleport out, though, so I'm not sure it's the best idea.

The Pan lord with the most hit points that's must immune to my main attack and I get to face him without having the time to prepare.

Don't be afraid of Cerebov, he isn't immune to Fire Storm, he just resists about a half of its damage. Imho, fire storm is still the best weapon against him for your character.

I know, which is why I said most immune (in comparison to the other three lords) rather than immune. Still, my Firestorm should currently only do 180 / 2 * 0.45 = 40 damage on average to him, which would require around 16 castings at 8 MP each = 128 MP total. That's quite a few crystal ball evocations that need to go right and quite a few turns for him to do the same thing to me, the difference being that I'm not immune to fire and that I have far less HP.

I wouldn't recommend trying to kill Cerebov with firestorm. Like you said, it takes a long chain of not getting hit with firestorm, controlled blinking, and successful evocations of your cboe. I would ninja the rune and stomp the other pan lords if you want to kill some powerful dudes.

Decided to avoid Cerebov and managed to ninja his rune and the loot from the three larger towers. Couldn't be bothered with the smaller ones since they only hold one item each anyway. A few Pan floors later I came upon a zig portal. Having cleared one of these when I did a test run with a copy of my character before I entered Pan just to get some rough idea of what I'd be facing if I were to go into one, I figured I could enter this one pretty safely. You know, it's exactly these kinds of moments of misguided confidence that crawl will punish you for.

The first 19 floors were no problem at all. I was walking along merrily while everything around me died a horrible fiery death. All was right with the world. Found three necronomicons (gee, thanks crawl. You couldn't have maybe spaced those out a little more?), a wand of healing and enough rings and amulets to open up a profitable little jewellery store when I retire from adventuring. So, onwards to floor 20 and let's see what we have this time. Hm. Deep dwarves. Guess I can't use fire storm then. Now in my test run I had one floor which contained one or two deep dwarves. The solution was simple enough, just summon some horrible things and let them handle it. The problem with this strategy is that it works fine on small numbers, but not so great when you're faced with this:

Despite starting with a respectable force, they slowly but surely succumbed to the waves of dwarves crashing down upon them. And I couldn't help them because killing the cheating little buggers results in an instant suicide for me. Oh well. Screw the loot. Let's just get out of here. One teleport and a few blinks later I flee to level 21. Ok, heal back up and let's see what we... purple-outlined squares. Wonderful. Summoned another horrible thing army and had them deal with the rest of the level until that stupid silent spectre finally showed its ugly face. Once he fell, mopping up the rest of the resistance was trivial. Now, at this point I had not yet found any scrolls of acquirement to get back my entrance fee so I could do another one. So I figured that since I just had two anti-fire storm floors in a row, SURELY the next one would let me burninate things, RIGHT? To the readers that are currently thinking "Silly FalconNL, haven't you learned by now that crawl wants you dead? You should've left the zig immediately!": congratulations. You are a smarter crawl player than I am. So, like an idiot (you'd think that 40-odd INT score would count for something), I went down to the next floor, only to be presented with... mummies >_<
For the love of Vehumet give me something to burninate!

Fine. If that's the way you want to play it, crawl, that's the way we'll play it. Let's see, one of the biggest problems of mummies is death curses, right? Well, guess what? I'll just summon a veritable army of horrible things and let them deal with the walking rolls of toilet paper. Haha! I am immune to your puny death curses! Come, my pretties! Kill the walking first aid kits! We'll show them who's... ow! Oh. It seems they can also torment you before dying. Well, no matter. Surely my army can kill them quickly before they... ow! Well, this gives me a chance to test out that shiny new wand of healing. *zap* ow! *zap* ow! *zap* ow! Ok, this thing isn't nearly as awesome as advertised. I was at 50-odd HP at this point. I briefly considered memorising Death's Door, but at this rate I figured I'd be dead before I reached the 'D' in the table of contents. Well, there's only three greater mummies in LOS... maybe I can kill them and then quickly learn the spell. Three fire storms later, the last mummy's death curse goes off, and I now find myself in the bottom center of them room. At about 20 HP. Eye to eye with about 30 mummies of all shapes and sizes. *gulp*. This isn't going to end well, is it? Only one thing left to do. PANIC! I gave a silent prayer to Vehumet and started reading blink scrolls like a madman. Against all odds, I manage to reach the portal out. *redacted* this floor, *redacted* this ziggurat and *redacted* this game. I am now at 17 HP. Please don't kill me, please don't kill me... success! I land back in Pan, significantly the worse for wear but still in one piece. I quickly zap myself to a less critical state of health and dispatch the demons that interrupt me while resting back to full health. Still, it wasn't a total loss. I got back up to six stars of piety and I got some ok loot (still have to indentify a good deal of it). The only downside is I won't be able to enter any more zigs for the forseeable future but after this experience I'm not sure I want to. Whose bright idea was it to have so many monsters that you can't practically kill?

Next up: Gloorx Vloq, specifically the gloorx_vloq vault. And from the looks of my magic map, a portal out of this godforsaken place. Hopefully it's a portal to the dungeon and not to the Abyss.

Mummy levels are easier with a dragon swarm summoned. Don't move forward, stay and summon. When a mummy gets into LOS, command your dragons to kill it. Wandering dragons will eventually finish the job in a while.

Don't hesitate to prepare just after entering a level. Summon an army, be hasted, swifted, phase shifted, missile reflective... any buff may save your life in Zig. Move on only when you're ready.

Learn Necromutation asap, that will make mummy levels ways easier because fire storm becomes usable.

You have an excessive strength (as I did a while ago). Any non-vanilla helm and any gauntlets (say, with rN or with other resistances or with +Int) is better than yours. More, is FS at full power because of Vehumet? As far as I understand, you need at least one more power boost to gain 200 spell power, so I recommend you to wear your ring of fire. It's rN will provide a small defence too.

hmm do deep dwarves cast damage mirror when outside of your LOS?
I just went through a zig with a DEWz of similar build, fire stormed them when they're just at the edge of LOS, and I don't recall incurring damage at all.

Believe me, I'm working on it. Currently it's still at like 78% failure though, so I need to skill up some more before I can even try to memorise it. Will start training Transmutations as soon as I get back to my stash/find a random book with a transmutation spell.

Obviously. I found this one in the zig and was wearing it just to carry all the loot. I'll be swapping it out as soon as I get all this stuff back to my stash.

Correct, it's currently at 180. Once I get rid of all this stuff I can swap my helm for the SInv one, which will free up a ring slot.

Lom Lobon was a tad more annoying because he kept healing, but he went down quickly enough (10 turns between noticing and killing him). A couple more pan levels later I finally found an exit, allowing me to dump all the crap I was carrying and learn Death's Door and Necromutation, though they still need some work to become reliably castable (I'm training transmutations, but since it's still at level 0.0 the dump doesn't show it). After all that, I'm now at 10/15 runes, with only Hell and Tomb remaining, neither of which seem terribly appealing. But I guess we have do what must be done, so it's time for another round of questions:

  • Hell branch order. I was thinking Cocytus (fire storm it up) -> Dis (relatively easy according to the wiki) -> Tartarus -> Gehenna (fire storm less efficient). Better ideas are welcome.
  • Lich form. According to the wiki I shouldn't use it in Tartarus. Any other places where it's a bad idea?
  • I've got 7 spell levels left, so I can either learn Haunt or dump Swiftness and go with Summon Dragon. The former seems more useful in Tomb. Which of the two (or another spell altogether) would you guys recommend?
  • Rings. Sustain abilities and regeneration or something else?
  • Hells should be dived and not fully explored and I should rely on my crystal ball and/or sublimation of blood rather than resting whenever possible to limit my exposure the mystical force as much as possible, right?
  • Due to my near-death experience with mummies in Zig and it being the general advice I'm planning to do the Hells before Tomb (also gives me more time to train necromutation), unless anyone has any compelling arguments for the reverse.
  • As always, any other tips are welcome.

Deep dwarves will only pain mirror if they can see a hostile enemy. So if you are using ice storm you can safely ice storm them from outside of LOS and you will never get hit by pain mirror. Fire vortices are a hostile enemy though so fire storming DD levels is usually a bad idea.

The only reason it's risky in Tartarus is because of the risk of a Hell Effect dropping a silent spectre on you. Shadow fiends cast Dispel Undead, which will kill you in four hits if you're in lichform, but you have Controlled Blink and Haste so you can bombard them from outside Dispel Undead's range. If you had an artefact with +blink, you'd be fine in Tartarus, too.

I don't see why you'd bother with either. Just spam Iron Shot while Hasted against solo enemies. Death's Door or Necromutation make Fire Storm safer and makes clearing the place go faster, but make sure you have a way to recover from stat damage on-hand.

Neither are critical, but they could be nice if you don't have anything else of exceptional value. Restore ability potions are good enough for anywhere except Cocytus, and even then you can just run back to the Vestibule if you fall to dangerous levels in a stat.

You should have no trouble with Tomb at any point in the current game. It has very good loot, but it's unlikely to matter because you're ready for anything the game can throw at you anyway.

Yes they can. This didn't stop me from successfully clearing Deep Dwarf levels by doing just that though - at most one or two dwarves will be there that turn it on. As long as you yourself are fire resistant (I think? Is the reflected damage not elemental? I had rF+++ in any case) the damage wasn't enough to be instantly fatal. I had around 160 hp due to a high fighting skill (on a deep elf) and would mostly take 40-50 damage the one or two times it happened, and once I took a bad one for around 100 when I had more than a few DD already in sight. So it's definitely a risk, but I think it's fairly safe if you're at 100% of your health and you aren't firestorming too many at once. YMMV, I am not responsible for deaths, I did have a wand of heal wounds for emergencies, etc etc :)

If you wanted to do it slightly safer, aim the firestorm to be closer to you so that it doesn't hit as many, or any, unseen tiles.

On a related note, I have in fact killed a very powerful naga melee fighter by slouching packs of deep dwarves :)

Cleared Cocytus, which was pretty easy. Lichform + sustain abilities really takes the sting out of the mystical force. Decided to clear Tomb first, since that way there was at least a small chance of the loot being useful (it's not like I need it for Zot:5). Tomb didn't pose much of a threat either, particularly when I noticed on Tomb:3 that I'm pretty much immune to death curses and stopped bothering with summons. The worst I suffered was a temporary STR-1 and DEX-1. Firestorming all those mummies felt like a nice little revenge for the close call in zig. No useful loot, but another rune brings me at 12/15. For reference, here's my Tomb checklist:

  • Lichform. Shuts down torment, draining and rotting, lessens smite.
  • Haste. Counters slow.
  • 2 Sustain Abilities sources. All but shuts down stat drain. If you insist on summoning, it completely removes the penalty for Summon Horrible Things.

  • Mass abjuration. Mana-efficient way of getting rid of hostile summons.
  • Fire Storm at 10 hashes. Cloth wrappings burn.
  • Staff of Channeling/worship Sif. Sure, the crystal ball is more turn-efficient, but has a nasty habit of leaving you at 0 MP at crucial moments. Channeling is slower, but reliable and still plenty quick.
  • LRD/Shatter. Allows for a shortcut on Tomb:1, bypassing part of Tomb:1 and most of Tomb:2

EDIT: And the iron rune makes 13. No incidents worth mentioning and as usual the loot was rubbish.
EDIT2: Got tar_old, which makes for very convenient rune ninja-ing via LRD. Only one rune to go!

...and there we go. My first 15-rune win (and second overall). Gehenna was kind enough to spawn all the downstairs really close to the upstairs. Got geh_old, which I mostly skipped by destroying the south wall, applying a few iron shots directly to Asmodeus' forehead and grabbing the rune. The orb run was a little more eventful than the one on my previous three-runer, but once you've gotten 15 runes there's very little that can stop you. A couple Pan lords that dropped quickly enough and Cerebov even came by to bid me goodbye and wish me good luck with my shiny new orb. But Cerebov is a jerk so I avoided him. Soon enough I was back at D:1 and ready for some sweet, sweet freedom. Time to hang up my adventuring hat and start that jewellery shop...

Now that I've seen all that the game has to offer I must say I'm not sure I'll be doing a 15-runer again soon. There's a little too much tedium for my taste: wander around the abyss until the rune finally deigns to spawn. Wander around Pan until all the runes spawn, wander for a bunch more levels until you finally find an exit. The fact that in extended the enemies are pretty much limited to demons and undead doesn't really help. Do the hells, dealing with the summoned troops every couple dozen turns. And since by this point you're nigh-unkillable, the only part of it all that's even remotely a challenge are the non-random Pan lords and Hell bosses. Well, Cerebov at least. The others not so much. Granted, I imagine stat drain and mutations could make things more tricky, but thanks to lichform and sustain abilities I didn't have to deal with any of that.
