Recommend Me a background and a God for a Mountain Dwarf

Hello, I'm new to these forums and to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

I've been thinking about playing a Mountain Dwarf in my next game. So far I've played them as Hunters (which are excellent with crossbows) or Chaos Knights of Makhleb and went as down as D:7, but I've been considering playing a Fighter (which seems natural given the MD's aptitudes) or a Paladin. Which background and god do you recommend for a Mountain Dwarf?

EDIT: I'm playing v0.71.

Well if you really want to get the most for your mountain dwarfiness, play .8; heavy armor takes a huge buff.

Aside from that, people generally don't start out as paladins because of the difficulty. If anything they usually switch off to TSO after they've hit the end-game. MdFi is good. Find a shield and use axes or maces.

Fighter of Okawaru
Beserker of Trog
Hunter of Okawaru/Trog (I prefer Trog)
Healer of Elyvilon (switch to TSO when you find the crypt)

My most successful character build so far was a Mountain Dwarf Fighter of Okawaru, got to XL8 and DL7.

Reavers can work well with Ashenzari. You can use the Tranfer Knowledge to boost spellcasting with xp earned in axes for instance...

If you go with MDFi of Okes I can give you character-specific advice. It's my preferred build.

I definitely like this build as well, so any advice would be welcome.

I'll make a new thread and we can discuss it there.

With time, I grow to love Mountain Dwarf Hunters of Trog. My last game, the best so far for me (I got to XL9 and DL8), was with a Mountain Dwarf Hunter of Trog, and it went great for the most part.

Before the armour nerf, I used to play a lot of MD Paladins. I liked starting equipment and the "To Hit" bonus from the halo effect and the free SInv effect of it. Unfortunately I could never train invocations high enough to use the summons ability reliably.

I should try that again now that armour is improved again and now that I know a bit more about training skills.
