Trying Nemelex on SpWi

I've been playing SpWi's mostly, and always going Vehemut. But something interesting happened this game. On my way to the temple to start worshiping Vehemut, level 4 of the dungeon had a plethora of great shops, including one with an $2000 (!!) +8 AC ring, one with $205 "an encrusted short sword" (un-bought), one with a $257 "bloodstained trident" (un-bought), and most game-changing, a spellbook shop with book of Power (forked over the $540), book of Annihilations, and Grand Grimoire.

A bunch of the reasons for going Vehemut went out the window with that last shop, so I figured I should try something different. I'd never played Nemelex Xobeh before, and honestly, even after reading the guide on the wiki, I still didn't "get it". After playing with thee decks for while, I guess I'm starting the get the idea, sorta. It's fun having a ton of evocable nukes when my mana runs out. And this seems like a great character to be saccing stuff, since so much of the dungoen is useless crap for a Spriggan caster. But it still seems really weird and scary. I hit Famine once, and all my food was in my stash... Luckily, I was carrying my emergency porridge.

I'd be interested in any advice for the direction of this character, skills, etc. I didn't do the trick where I primed the weighting by eating permafood early (for obvious reasons), and I've been hoovering the entire dungeon, so I seem to be getting a big mix of decks. I'm still trying to find the Orc Mines to get more money for the level 4 shops.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

I came into this thread trying to figure out what a SpWi is :P

This might be better off in the YASD/YAVP forum, but I think memorizing Repel Missiles might be a good idea.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

I held off because I usually cast Mepthetic Cloud in any situation where I'd want Reflect Missiles, and because I knew Deflect Missiles was in one of the books from the lvl 4 book shop. I'm since memorized Deflect Missiles/Haste, but I don't really have the Charms skill for them. Maybe you're right, and I'm being foolish.

I'm growing to not like my god choice. I can deal with the reduced range, but it turns out I never really appreciated how important Vehumet''s increasing the power of my nukes is, and the mana-back after kills. I'm really sick of going upstairs and hitting 5 right now. Maybe I should have tried out Sif Muna for the channeling. I'm getting the feeling Nemelix is best for non-spellcasters in order for them to get access to spell-like abilities via decks, like wands. Whereas pure spellcasters don't really need random spells; I just dump wands in my stash, so why would decks be any different?

But I've got hungerless Orb at level 14, so I expect I'll finish out this character until I YASD.

As a spriggan, you're so fast (faster than centaurs, even) that you can often retreat from LOS, cast ewpwl missiles then start casting meph.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

I'm currently playing a SpVM of Nemelex that is doing great. I went pretty damn far with my last SpWz of Nemelex too. I'm going to give you some comments on the different decks hoping that'l help you.

Decks of Destruction are mostly things you spam to increase your piety. Once you build a large stash of decks you might want to keep one around to blast stuff your spell list is ill prepared to deal with, but it's not a panic-button (that's what Escape & Summonings are for). You're unlikely to get enough of them to kill everything with Decks for a while, so you'll probably need another way to killdudes.
This deck is relatively safe to use (arguably the safest). There are three ways to harm yourself with those decks, mistargeting an spell, Toxic Radiance, and Torment. The first is easy to avoid, just be careful where you aim your Flames and Spark cards. The second can be handled by rPois, Cure Poison, or just being ready to run away to rest if necessary the damage is pretty limited). The third one is only ever an issue with Legendary Decks and will never directly kill you (once again being prepared to retreat removes the danger).
The fact that it's pretty safe to use when you know what you're doing and that it doesn't reduce the XP received (the way summons do) means that it's just perfect to spam at everything as soon as you get it.

Decks of Summonings are very good. They are pretty safe and only get safer as their level increases! The best solution to Summoning Mishaps is ... drawing from a Deck of Summoning. Crusade should instantly solve the problems and if it doesn't more monsters will occupy the trouble-makers. Legendary Decks of Summoning are nicknamed "decks of winning" because they're pretty much the only thing you need to win. They can be used to overwhelm a difficult opponent (like a pesky unique) and whenever you are in a tough situation, calling a powerful ally/meat-shields by drawing a card from that deck can almost always save you.

Decks of Escape have the most powerful escape options in the game : controlled blink, instant controlled teleportation, entombment, etc ... However they can be quite dangerous. Almost all of the cards from those decks can kill you if misused and you get unlucky. This is mostly because different cards in there are useful for different types of tight spots. So I usually triple-draw from them, since you're very likely to find what you need or at least avoid using something that'd make the situation worse. Stacking them to have some specific escape tools available at any time is also great (Legendary Portal comes to mind...).
Used correctly they can let you survive numerous situations that would have been certain death otherwise.

Decks of Dungeons ... honestly I don't really know what to make of them. The ability to create portals to loot-filled places from Legendary Decks is great. Other abilities can be abused in some evil and imaginative ways. But overall it is a bit dangerous and very situational.

And finally Decks of Wonders. Experience cards are extremely powerful (especially with high card power!) and the Helix card from ornate and Legendary decks is awesome. Stacking mutations is powerful but dangerous, so having a source that is heavily biased in your favor is a great way to gain multiple permanent benefits. Shuffle can be awesome for a Troll or similar brute that want to switch from melee to caster in the mid/late game, and Focus is useful for characters that start with average stats in order to put more weight on the one they actually use, but otherwise those are dangerous (and neither apply to Spriggans).
Since there are only a few useful cards and a couple of very dangerous ones, you should triple draw and/or stack them.

Overall : use your Decks of Summoning to kill stuff, keeping a couple for the tough stuff. Keep an Escape Deck or two to get out of hairy situations. Exploit the Wonders one for awesome long term bonuses. The rest is (carefully) spammed for piety. Although you might want to stack Defence (or possibly even Changes) since high powered Elixir card lets you recover all HPs and MPs instantly, which is godly.

EDIT: reworded the part on Decks of Destruction that sounded like they aren't awesome. They aren't win-buttons, but their main drawback is that you may not have enough of them to blast everything! (although if you hate resting and lack rPois, the Toxic Radiance can get annoying)
If I suggest spamming them as soon as you get them it's because it's very safe to do so and you need the piety for more decks that are more powerful and can be used better. So it's because they're good at being spammed, not because they're worthless at being used.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

Keep in mind that while the deck of summoning is extremely powerful, you will receive a reduced amount of XP from enemies which your allies have help kill. (Down to a minimum of 50%)

Overuse of these decks can hurt you in the long run.

While the 50% reduction part is technically true, the conclusion you've drawn from it is completely wrong. Since xp costs for additional skill levels increases dramatically after each level, a 50% reduction in xp will at most cause you to lag a level or two behind where you otherwise would have been for every skill. Low-level support skills won't even be affected that much. In exchange, you get an army of superpowered minions that remove anything dangerous before it can hurt you.

I am still of the opinion that overuse CAN hurt you in the long run but if you've judged me to be completely wrong, so be it.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

You can die with bad tactics, you can die to a horribly skilled character, but never ever will you die to a lack of experience in general. There is just too much in the game, in addition to what KoboldLord already said. If you are experiencing problems it has nothing to do with your decks of summoning or your summons in general, it is because either your skilling or your tactics are bad. You're completely wrong. :P

The thing about summoning is: If you can summon until the cows come home, you don't NEED as many skills as a non-summon-spammer would.

Re: Trying Nemelex on SpWi

Albeit early game you have nothing to lose, so minds as well try to get some XP while you can.

After losing that char will equate to a good chunk of lost time... yea. The 50% loss is the last thing that should be on your mind.
