Marduk the fiery Demonspawn [CiP->YAVP]

So I started as a DS wizard and ended up finding a Fire Elementalist starting book along with a Staff of Fire, so I naturally specialized this way.
Things have been going pretty well for me (Yaktaur Captains are significantly less of a problem now that I remember to abuse rMissiles and haste), and as a special note I have to say I LOVE the Demonic Guardian mutation to bits.

YAY!

Same thing with Mara and some other uniques.

Since I was a Sif worshipper who started as a Wizard, I did not focus on Fire magic but rather Conjuration, which is why i was able to use orb of Destruction as soon as I found it. That has been my main weapon against rF monsters, a bit overkill on some but it works great.

Right now, I'm not sure where I should be heading. Sif has been gifting me pretty much nothing but Ice Cnj (and some Earth ones too) for a while, and I noticed I can almost cast Freezing Cloud despite having Air2/Ice0. Of course I have Firestorm waiting in a book in my stash (thanks Sif!), but I'm obviously not ready to cast it.
So maybe I should bring up Fire up to par from its level 6 to cast it, or maybe I should keep raising Conjuration to cast some clouds?
And if I want to branch in another direction first, I have Abjuration, Dispel Undead, Regeneration and a couple more waiting in books. Not to mention I could also go Earth and grab Iron Shot.

Yeah, Demonic Guardian is crazy powerful.

Nice resists, but I'd be careful, the -rC could be fatal in the wrong circumstances.

Spell wise, Firestorm is amazing, loud, hunger inducing, but amazing. If I were you, I'd rush it as hard as I could.

Location wise, I'd do vault down to 7 then elf down to 4 (the last level is crazy hard on each). Before/after, you could also do snake, which isn't that hard as long as you nuke from distance.

I agree about the rC-, I take it off any time I enter a new area or see an enemy that can use cold magic. But between the Dragons, Hell Knights, and Yaktaurs with flaming bows, I've really needed the rF+ from that ring. Not to mention the extra punch on all my fire spells.

Don't you think Elf would be a bit too dangerous? My only way of handling their casters is to use Meph cloud (even if spamming Fireball works when they are too far away for my control spell). Shouldn't I grab something else to be able to do it reliably?

Meph cloud + fireball can work, firestorm is better. Thinking about it, going snake before elf could be doable. It's hard for me to be sure, since my casters normally have firestorm running by the time they finish vault down to 7.

fireball/bolt of fire should be more reliable than meph at dealing with elves. See invisible would be useful though you can still use those spells to burn them. I'd wait before attempting the Elf 5 vault though. You could do what you can of Snake/Shoals, then Vaults to 7, Dungeon to 26, Crypt (in any order for those 3 depending how hard it's going).
OOD should handle non-fire damage, if you did want Iron Shot I'd forget OOD but it's not worth the Earth investment, and I don't think you have skill xp to waste.
Fighting, Fire, and Traps & Doors should be raised now.

Firestorm is nice, but you do not need to try to get online as soon as possible. You'll probably want it for Vault 8/Zot, but until that time Bolt of Fire/Fireball/OOD are usually more than enough. Now Fighting and T&D are more important. Also, learning Regeneration is a good idea, it requires minimal investment in necromancy and you have a lot of free spell slots anyway.

If you're worried about resists, checking all those runed/glowing robes in Orc may be useful if you haven't done this yet, hopefully, you will get a robe of resistance.

I'd say Snake 1-4 is likely to be easier than Elf. Just be careful with quick enemies, such as anacondas, and don't forget that blink lets you escape constriction. On a side note, Inner Flame/Fireball combo makes Snake a lot more fun :)

By the way, you can freely drop quite a bit of your stuff, carrying that many curing and HW potions, as well as teleport scrolls is just asking to get them destroyed, especially without conservation. Lamps of fire are somewhat useless, and with your mutations you definitely do not need two rN rings.

Bolt of Fire is very powerful. at max power you can 2 shot stone giants and usually 1 shot the higher end elves with the exception of blademasters.

Also don't tell anyone but Ignite Poison makes everything but anacondas just DIE in Snake pits. If you have access to that then enjoy.

I only got the second pip of rN a couple turns ago. I only carry the lamps to bring them to my stash, since I want them for my collection.

Yes, but I only have a few points of Fire and no Transmutation.

I think I should probably work on Fire (on top of Fighting and T&D, since I am starting to see ZOT traps) to use Ignite Poison in the Snake Pits. It'll be useful later when I want to use Firestorm.

I love fire elementalists. Sticky flame and a bit of dodging can pretty much get you through lair and a lot of the regular dungeon.

I'm planning to learn Regeneration and Teleport Control (since I have Blink) as well as Flight (since I already have Swiftness). I could also get Fire Ring, alternatively (or in addition to some of those if I gain a couple levels). Then I would raid Vaults down to the level 7, and finish Dungeon levels 18->20 (there's a section of the levels 18 and 19 that was not accessible through the upper levels, so I have to explore D:20 enough to find the stairs back up to that part of the level). That done, I will probably grab Ignite Poison (possibly forgetting a spell to make room for it) to raid Snake for a bit, then I'll make sure I have Flight (which I am likely to forget for IP) to try my luck on Shoals. After doing those down to the penultimate level, I'll go back to Dungeon down to 27.

Then ... the really hard part starts, I guess.

I made it all the way down to Vaults:7.
Yaktaurs are REALLY annoying.
Liches can actually cast ice spells, who knew ... ouch. Close to 100 damage in a single hit.
Orbs of Destruction will often ineffectually explode against metal walls that are not even in their way, so no casting that near one of those.
Sphinxes, manageable when alone, definetely don't want to meet one with friends in a position where I'll be unable to nuke it.
The demonic helpers mutation is awesome, I was right to love it. Even just 2s are good enough to blast a Lich in one shot, or single-handedly killing an Orc Knight, Sorcerer, and a Storm Dragon (all at once) without any help from me.
Speaking of mutations, I got the antennae one, which only detects enemies within 2 squares for now, can't wait to get the lvl3 that gives sInv. However, I thought it would not prevent the use of headwear until level 3, but as soon as it appeared my +2 spiked helmet fell off. What gives?

I'm thinking about raising my Invocations some given how often I rely on the channeling ability (ie : very). I have turned off T&D at level 6, I'm not sure how high I should get it. Fighting just got to level 8 and I am similarly wondering when to turn it back off. Fire is almost at 10, but that's still not enought to bring the failure rate of Fire Storm below 100%, that thing is hard to use! (Ignite Poison should work just fine, though)

Here's the updated dump. I'd still like some feedback on my plan to learn Ignite Poison for Snake, and then learn Flight for Shoals before delving down to D:27, in addition to the questions about skill development.

Getting T&D to 10 before Zot is nice, keeps you from hitting zot traps (I'd still get Fire Storm first)
I'd personally turn fighting off until you get Firestorm castable, the extra HP are nice but not amazing.

Ignite Poison will make Snake a joke. Flight for Shoals is nice but not 100% necessary, just be careful around deep water even with it!

You've got a good set of resists and path forward, be cautious, you have a good chance of hitting zot.

I've decided to focus on Fire Magic, and despite getting it up around 14, it barely has any effect on the failure rate of Fire Storm, this spell is going to be hard to learn.

However, Ignite Poison owns the Snake Pit. Which isn't all that challenging compared to Vaults:7 anyway. At least not the first levels. Thanks to rPois food is plentiful, so I can abuse all my magic easily (I only have to be careful not to nuke the corpses with Ignite Poison!). The only dangerous foe around here is Hubris...

According to the knowledge bot...

Skill_rate is 3*Spellcasting + 2*Intelligence + 12*(Average of skills in spell schools used by that spell).

To cast a level 9
Without wizardry bonus: skills_rate = 330.

3 * 21 + 2 * 28 + 12 * ((19 + 9)/2) = 63 + 56 + 168 = 287 < 330

Assuming the same Int and Spellcasting, you need:
63 + 56 + 12 * x = 330
x = 17.58333333333333
about 17 average cj and fire to cast FIrestorm with 55% success rate.

Given 19 Cj, you need 15 Fire to hit that.

Depending on intelligence, it is possible to max all relevant skills and still have somewhat high failure rates. With Vehumet/wizardry, you might be able to get away with getting all relevant skills to 22 or so; without, you'd better plan on getting skills very high indeed to cast the spells.

I have finally recovered the disc this character was sitting on, and I even re-installed Crawl 0.10 to finally finish his adventure. Since he's a fire mage, I've decided to visit a couple levels of Cocytos for easy XPs. After one too many dangerous hell effects, I've decided that the Hell levels were not an appropriate place to easily gain more experience and loot... My two main concerns are now "what spells should I learn" and "where should I go now."

No one has any advice? It's my first time tackling the extended game so I'd really appreciate the guidance.

Let's see... throw away all Conj spells of Lv 5 and below. Delayed Fireball... not necessary but I suppose it could be nice. OOD is also obsolete now. Seriously, you have firestorm so you don't need anything else. Some close-range, single-target nuke (like LCS or Iron Shot) would be nice but isn't necessary: you have bolt of fire for that anyway.

You're missing cBlink.

Recommend getting either Summons or Necromancy for army or buffs respectively. Not necromutation, I mean Borg and Death's Door.

Go hit Pan and be prepared to run away from floors that are spewing out lots of native Fiends - all the unique floors don't spam Fiends as natives (though they are honour guards to the unique pan lords).

Since Delayed Fireball is level 7 and Fireball is free when I have the other spell, I'm assuming you advise me to get rid of Meph Cloud, Sticky Flame and Mystic Blast.
I agree about the first one. It has served me well, but after getting inside Zot there are very few targets that are vulnerable to it. Sticky Flame is less obvious as I still use it to good effect, but it's true that its damage is probably not worth the range requirement+4 spell levels. However, IMB is a very important part of my arsenal, as it is my standard spammed attack, it kills most weak monster in one shot for few MPs, costs no Hunger and has high damage/MP ratio on top of being safe.

On the other hand, after checking my stats I reduce spell hunger by 910, so only lvl9 spells cost any, and even then it's not much. Damn, I can actually spam IOoD at everything. Which has even better damage/MP ratio and is even more fun to boot.

I don't need anything else, but FS only deals half damage to fire immunes, not to mention the higher MP cost (and possibly lower damage/MP ratio), hunger cost and noise. For now, I really don't see what those 7 spell levels could be better spent on, especially considering I have 17 free slots already (thanks to getting rid of the low level conjurations like you suggested).

I did consider learning those spells, but I don't think all the XP I'd have to sink into Earth Magic would be worth it. As you've said, I have BoF for that, and even for fire immunes I can do Blink+Fire Storm/IOoD.

Yeah, I know. :( I do have Blink + "M - ring of the Five Gods {cTele Int+3 Acc+4}", though. Not as good, but cBlink demands a lot of Translocation skill. I probably should make it my priority now.

I like the idea of getting some Necro, especially with the Demonspawn's aptitude and thematic. But that would be a very large investment, right? Shouldn't I train Dodging or something before that? (obviously, I should raise Tloc first, for cBlink).

Half damage of firestorm is still way more damage than anything below Lv 6 in Conj. It kills fast enough.

You are constantly shackled by the concept of limited EXP. In extended, that no longer applies. Indeed, if you are having to spend ANY MP to kill non-threatening targets by the time you're in Hell, you have not been taking advantage of the surplus EXP. Indeed, not having some (melee or not) weapon skill will kill you on a bad roll in Tartarus (well, you still can survive without a weapon skill but it's the simplest solution). So long as you aren't trying to do something silly like Shatter + Tornado, you can get all the skills you ever need without grinding in extended.

That was in answer to the comment "IOoD is obsolete". IOoD deals about as much damage as Firestorm and much more than a half resisted one. Sure you can kill fire immune things with Firestorm, but with IOoD it's faster and cheaper.
Another point in favor of IOoD : it creates a lot of blood splatters, and I have the special DS mutation that can turn those into flame clouds. Hilarious.

So ... you're saying I should train a weapon skill up before Necro? Or after? Which one do you think would work best?
I have a Demon Trident and Whip of Draining, as well as Demon Blades of Venom and Pain. Necro+Demon Blade of Pain on a DS could be loads of fun, but on the other hand Pain might notbe the best brand in the extended. Or I could use that scroll of Vorpalise weapon that has been laying around. Also I have the Shillelagh "Devastator" as well as unidentified randarts lying around the place.

In the time it takes OOD to reach a target at range 8, you could have firestormed 3 times (more if you're hasted) and been nuked 4 times. You also can't fire OOD consecutively else it blows up in your face. Corridors also deny OODs. Yes, OOD is cheaper, but it's not faster in all circumstances. In extended, cheaper doesn't mean as much as you really ought to have good mana reloading by then.

Exact skill order is something you'll figure out as you get a feel for extended. Since you don't intend to be using a weapon all that much, just use a vorpal demon weapon. What you already have is irrelevant, you'll be swimming in demon weapons soon. Since you have the Shillelagh, may as well use a demon whip in conjunction with it (since shatter doesn't do much on flying units).

OK, point taken, OoD is not going to be a good option in many situations. However that brings me back to the previous point : why should I forget this spell for?
So those spell slots aren't quite as useful as I thought, but I still don't see anything better to spend them on. Any suggestion on spells I should learn for now? I do have a bunch of free slots after forgetting those low level spells.

Here's a list of a few spells I can learn easily and which might be useful:
Abjuration, Teleport Other (probably too low chance to work, though), Airstrike (smite targetting is always fun, otoh FS does that too and the spell power would be low), Dispersal, Freezing Cloud (cloud spells are nice, but Fire Storm is also a "cloud spell"), Iron Shot/Poison Arrow (both at 99% spell success and nearly max spell power), and Dig.

Hmmm, right now I only have Sif Channeling, and it consumes food, which is one of my main limits. I no longer find chunks to eat (or rarely) and have to rely on permafood, which isn't in unlimited supply. I keep hearing about how food is a non-issue, but that's not really my experience right now, when I have to stop exploring and go back to my stash it's usually because I've ran out of rations and need to stock up.

So Drain, Pain and Venom are all worse than even Vorpal ... I was afraid of that. Since I have a scroll of Vorpalize Weapon, I could make a Freezing or Flaming brand permanent, wouldn't one of those be better than Vorpal? Or something else.

Freezing/Flaming would be fine as an alternative. But chances are, you'll find a naturally freezing/flaming demon weapon in extended anyway so don't bother wasting a vorpal scroll on it.

Permafood IS in unlimited supply - because it spawns in Pan which is infinite. Having said that, you may want to invest in CBoE requirements for faster mana reloading, with Sif to get you started again if you hit 0 mp.

Of the spells you've listed, they're all useless except Dispersal and Dig. Abjuration is 'useless' because you have fire storm. There is no rush to forget OOD, keep it around until you need to free up spell slots (for Borg and DDoor).

Really, at this point it sounds like the best advice to give would be "go take a head-first dive into Pan and then assess the situation once you've been 'baptised' in the insanity of infinity".

But permafood accrual isn't unlimited if you can't find it faster than you consume it. So maybe I'll get good enough to do that in Pan, but it hasn't been my experience for the time being. It's nice to know that it's a possibility, though.

When dangerous things get in melee range - that's the one range where using Firestorm is risky as it might hit you as well (unpredictable blast radius). Even super-high MR mobs (including 'immunity' MR) will get blinked away.

I got myself both Dispersal and Dig. Dispersal saw a little bit of use, especially those few times I took the stairs to a new level and landed in an area already surrounded by enemies.
But Dig! Damn, this is the spell I used the most in the Pits, by FAR. Those Acid Walls are so annoying, but so easy to deal with when you can spam Dig! Not to mention those isolated pockets that you can't reach without it (Antena mutation letting me sense enemies through wall is nice for that).

I only have to deal with that last level of Slime, and then on to Pandemonium.

Ok, so when i went into Pan, I forgot to replace Sustab/Sustenance by actually combat useful rings. And when the first room turned out to be the lair of a Firestorm casting Pan Lord, I even forgot that I had a rF++ ring I could equip.
It wasn't pretty ...

Thankfully, cBlink saved my bacon, and I was abloe to flee to an empty corridor to recover, and when I met the Pan Lord again I immediately recognized that it was the threat and spammed Fire Storms at it until my mana pool dried up. Which happened to be just enough to kill it.

Well, that was fun! Interesting fact: not all Pan levels have a Pan lord inside.
Also I can blow through most of those levels fast enough that I get more food than I spend. The notable exception was that vault full of iron grates protecting a variety of smiting demons like Smoke Demons and Brimestone Fiends. Thankfully, Fire Storm is also smite-targetted! However, killing a BF with Fire Storm takes all of my mana pool given how resilient and fire resistant they are. I had to spend all the food I had gathered up and then some to make it through that level. The Pan Lord hiding in that Vault was no slouch either.
But I got a rune for my troubles, yay! It's my first time having 5 of those at once.

I can learn both Bjorn's Revification and Death's Door. How should I use them when I have them? What else should I learn?
Now that I can cast my Necro spells at 95~99% reliability and I have my weapon skill to min delay, I'm starting to wonder if I should train for Necromutation. Or I could raise my survival skills. Something else that I should eventually do is raise my Fire+Cnj enough to cast FS at full spell power and reliability both, since that for the time being I can only have one of them at once depending on wether I am wielding a Staff of Wizardry or Conjuration. Any advice on what order that should come in, or on other things to train?

Speaking of weapon skill, I found a lot of demon whips (exit vault filled to the brim with Balrugs, so many Balrugs). I just threw away the Reaching, Draining, Vampiric and Venom ones since those are of limited usefulness now. I now fight with a DWhip of Electrocution. Is that good, or should I look for something else? when should I spend all those Enchant Weapon scrolls I've been hoarding since the beginning of the game?

Necromutation prevents many things (including Borg/DDoor), I wouldn't bother with it.

Both revivification and Death's Door are emergency spells - DDoor can be use more preemptively (but make sure to win or escape), or to do something like skip a tough ziggurat floor. It's also preferable when the enemy damage output is basically infinite (hellion island, tons of fiends/tormentors with a pan lord, etc). Borgnjor's just does what it says - heal to full. If healing to full is what you want and need, do it.

Dwhip of elec is good except against flying enemies, which is a lot. but it doesn't matter that much, go ahead and enchant it or a freezing one.

Get more fighting/dodging, then fire/conj for fire storm power. Note that you will never get full power anyway so you can always use more :)

I see! So having max # in the spell power category doesn't mean you have max spell power, just that you have at least 150. OK, that's good to know, I'm definitely packing the Conjuration Staff now.

Is the max HP reduction from Borgnjor's Revification is akin to the one from rot? That is to say, reversible through healing.

Well, you have Fire Storm, cBlink, Haste, Deflect Missles, Blink, Dig, Regeneration and you can learn the 2 panic buttons. I am not sure if there are any other good spells in the game... Maybe we need level 10 "I win" spell :)

Don't think about spells only, Summoning Dragon could be useful but I believe you need Fighting/Dodging/Traps at the moment.

Edit: Oops, you don't have Deflect Missiles and Regeneration. They can be very useful and don't require much XP for your char.

I do have those two spells, but that reminds me that I wanted to ask something about DM. What monsters is that useful against in Pan? Other than the occasional launcher wielding crittern that is.

DM is useful vs Bolts of Fire/Draining/Lightning/Cold/Venom so Pan monsters list includes Blizzard Demon, Green Death, Ice Fiend, Shadow Fiend, Gloorx Vloq etc.

Dammit! All this time I thought repel and deflect only worked against arrows/bullets etc. Not magical missiles. *shakes his fist at D&D*

Of course the bots imply as much. But I never thought to look at the bots for a spell I thought was so simple. Then again, the bots also raised my opinion on Sure Blade. Especially when I realized you could use it on a branded weapon.

Hmm, Demonic Horde to instantly summon a chaff cloud would be good. If you don't have the spell levels to spare for it, there are cheaper alternatives: scorpions or butterflies. Their purpose is to block Mutation rays and get in the way of Fiend Hellfire (which isn't smite targetted).

After going through a couple of levels of Pan (and getting smited by TSO for killing holy swines and eating their flesh, hahaha), I have to say Executionners. I used to be able to easily blow them up with Orb of Destruction, but now that I've forgotten it I'm more or less ofrced to rely on Bolt of Fire and its tendency to miss has almost gotten me killed a couple times. If all goes well, I kill them in 2~3 casts which is just fast enough to prevent them from ever making contact in an optimal situation, but if I get unlucky I can miss 4 times thus giving it way too much time to slice me into demonspawn chopsuey. They often end up taking ~50% of my HP, and they can require a lot of MPs to handle. If I get cornered by one after fighting something or get found out by several in a row, I am in a very real risk of dying.

I would greatly appreciate advice on how to handle them, as well as tips for how to retreat to safety and recover while in Pandemonium.

For recovery in Pandemonium, look at what sort of stuff the level is spawning. If it's weaker demons, just find a corridor (less tiles in sight) and rest / cast regeneration / wear rings of regeneration. If it's fiends or executioners, you might want to just dash for a portal after less healing. Sometimes making a tunnel with a diagonal Dig and then a disintegration at right angles to that will help (so only 1 tile will be in sight from your rest place).

I usually use melee for executioners.

HAAAA! I wasn't wearing my shoes! Thanks for pointing that out. I really feel stupid, and not just because that bloody Neqoxec made me lose the +Int from the Gain Int potion either ...

The entry portal landed me right in front of the Pan Lord's vault, with a Neqoxec in my back (as well as a balrug and a Hell beast and a Pit Fiend around the pan lord Ulewneec plus four mid rank demons hanging around) and I didn't think that taking the time to deal with the mutating menace was the right decision when I had that much painful fiery death awaiting to blast me to smithereens. Of course the right decision would have been to deal with the Neqoxec without spending any time thanks to my Delayed Fireball, that's what it's for. Hindsight's 20/20 and all that.
At least I did learn from that mistake when another couple Neqoxec came into view at the same time as a nasty 1 later in the level.

I keep meeting Balrugs, Hellions, Pit Fiends and Brimstone Fiends, which are all immune to fire, so my only way to deal with them is Fire Storm now that I've forgotten both pure conjuration spells. Which takes a lot of MPs, is noisy, and dangerous once they are in contact. Blarg. On the plus side, spamming Fire Storm is fun : "You feel a surge of power! A raging storm of fire appears!".

Thanks for the advice. For the time being I walk to the edge of the map and dig a "L" outside the map, hiding behind the corner. If something approaches I can sense it before it gets there and Dig another way back to the level.

I got another +2,+1 demon whip of freezing, should I enchant it right now or try to get one with a better base modifiers?

I decided to check if the high level book gathering dust in the crypt was indeed a Necronomicon (it was :) ) and on my way back up I met Mennas, who I had left there when I cleaned the place. A couple of enhanced Fire Storm and he shall no longer annoy me. I got his holy blade as a trophy, which I'll showcase somewhere in the lair I made around the entrance to Gehenna (as a fiery Demon Spawn, it's normal for me to make my house there, is it not?). I have so many books, this is getting ridiculous.
Speaking of books, I found a manual of Fighting on a Pan floor and I used it to raise it to 15.

I now kill 5s, almosr all 4s and a few 3s with my whip, I feel like a badass warrior :lol: . Although I really need to remember to switch back to my staff after slashing a popcorn monster into submission with my whip...

The one time I tried it, it resisted all cast until I was so low on MPs and HPs that I had to burn a Blink and Teleport scroll to get out alive.

Oh right, v0.10 was when it could be resisted. Not sure when that commit happened but Dispersal is a lot more useful now - not to mention, Disjunction.

Incidentally, for future dumps also include the dungeon overview. I like to set up my init.txt file so everything useful to a dump is lined up so I can do a big drag-select copy-paste. In general, the only thing that dilutes information is the Vanquished Creatures list and the Notes section.
