YASD: MDDK forgetting abilities is lame

I've got this MDDK going, and I've managed to get runes from Snake and Shoals with no real trouble. A lot of that was probably finding an Elec branded Demon Whip lying on the ground my first trip into Lair. Snake was no trouble when I cleared it top to bottom a few levels ago, Orc was no trouble and I'm pretty sure that my ring of Slaying came from a shop on Orc:4.
I had my only real close call when I was down on D:25 or so and found the vault with fire demons on one side and ice demons on the other side, I'm used to that vault about 12 levels higher where it isn't much of a problem. I've never seen most of those enemies in those quantities before so I turned tail and ran away sacrificing most of my minions in the process. Fortunately I left Elf and Shoals untouched for just such an occasion. An amulet of controlled flight and boots of levitation made Shoals almost trivial and finding Nergalle and enslaving her on Shoals:2 was a bonus.
I've come across precious few portals, an Ice Cave which I jumped into with only rC+ and quickly remembered why I shouldn't be there, the WizLab of WuCad Mu, and a Trove portal asking for a wand of healing that I don't have.
I've just started finding better armor for my slots and as you can see I'm still missing anything decent for a couple of spots, there have been almost no helmets like 4 total headgear items, no decent cloaks, no decent jewlery save the ring of slaying.

So what is the next step? I figure the 3 options for runes are all places I've never been before, Vaults:8 any of Slime and the Abyss (i've been there, but never willingly/looking for the rune)
Ask questions about what the shops have and what my stash contains and I'll get on it. (before you ask, no, there are no wands of healing in shops, i've checked, 3 times)
Do I even have a chance at getting a 3rd rune and making my first ever foray into Zot?

This character doesn't only have "chances", it should be quite easy from here.

The Abyss may be easier than V:8 but it's also a very annoying resource drain and a great place to get bad mutations (plus it's notoriously unfun).
Slime is generally harder than V:8 and also has more actual requirements (doing it without rCorr/rAcid at this stage or any stage is masochism, same for rMut, Stasis is also good to have...), plus, minons are basically useless there since they will totally die to the walls.

Your best bet is clearing D, clearing V:8, then heading for Zot. While the Crypt is very easy at this stage I experienced a heavy drop in piety when I went there with my Death Knight win. It's up to you if you can afford that.

Don't you have a better shield? It's a common misconception that Reflection is a good brand because oh wow, it happened to kill that one deep elf annihilator in one shot. Reflection is cool when it works but any resistance is usually better. I'd especially emphasise this point for a character in Zot.

Shields have also been in short supply, even after diving to Elf:4, I have a buckler with rN+, and probably an unidentified runed buckler or two that I could check.
I figured that Crypt would be too much of a piety hit not knowing how possible it would be to speed run down to the bottom and grab the rune and run since i've never been down there before.

Secondary questions:
Is it worth it to keep that legendary deck of summonings and when do I start dealing cards from it?
If I find a wand of healing is it reasonable to trade it for Trove access or is that something that I should keep for Zot and the surface dash?

1) Crypt has no rune, only a relatively small amount of loot (compared to V:8, Tomb and Slime anway). If you dive to level you shouldn't experience too much of a loss anyway. I should probably note that I used Pain Mirror twice when I was in Crypt, and fully cleared it, resulting in ****** -> ***.
2) That deck isn't good without Evocations skill (too low power, not reliable). It's not worth investing in Evocations for.
3) A wand of healing is too much for a trove if you have only one. These are extremely valuable and spending them for that is too much of a gamble (unless you happen to have like 20 heal wounds potions and conservation...)

Pity about the shields. A buckler isn't going to be superior to that with the exception of the "resistance" (rC+, rF+) brand, rF+ for Zot or good randarts. It would probably cut your SH in half.

It would definitely be worth it to acquire a wand if you come across a scroll: both healing and hasting have higher weightings, and you need both (the latter is especially useful on DK).

So Vaults:8 wasn't overly difficult the only real annoyance was getting drained so much that I made very little progress exp wise. I don't know if the ring of 24 vault guards is the standard welcoming committee but 3 or 4 blasts of drain life wiped them out. Found some decent loot, traded rPois for rF+ and rN+ on a plate mail, found a better ring of SInv now with Acc+2 and MR. Found a cloak with Str-4 Dam+3 which I believe to be an acceptable trade. So now I'm up to rF++, rN++ and rElec for resistances with 2 items providing MR. I'm going to dump some extra stuff off in my hive stash and then go down and clear D:27. Any general prep for Zot advice I need?

Lesson learned the hard way in Vaults:8, when coming upon a new source of loot, turn minion pickup orders away from 'anything lying on the ground' or else you will have to kill your own ghoul to get that artifact plate mail he picked up when you weren't looking.

Also found a non branded large shield, but I'm thinking the random reflection is probably better than the jump in SH, am I right?

Otherwise, Zot advice: recall your bone dragons around enemies to kill them quickly and safely. Bone dragons are really useful even on Zot:5.
Have rF++(+) and rMut on against orbs of fire. Have MR against ancient liches. You might need to swap out resistances against certain draconians (rC+ against white ones, rPois against green ones, and so on) and dragons (rC+ for ice, rF+ for vanilla, rElec vs storm, and so on). Have rElec against electric golems. You are in good shape resistance-wise, as you can see.
Try to avoid teleportation if you can; it is likely to put you in a worse situation. Hasting and running is better if possible.
Don't charge in like a bull in a china shop; you will often want to retreat and Recall. Your army isn't too strong so this will be needed.
Ghouls aren't rF+ so expect to lose some against orbs of fire. Bone Dragons are really really tough but not invulnerable so show them a bit of care too.

Haste from potions or a wand will be very useful, same for potions of might. Remember, this is the last fight in the game (the Orb run is more of, well, an Orb run) so you don't have to hoard consumables.
The Zot chamber is shaped like two lungs. You should only clear one. Kill the Orb Guardians, grab the Orb and then start rushing for the surface.
There's little point in doing Zot 1-4 if you don't desperately need EXP (you don't) because it will use consumables and might also cause some casualties in your army. If you see a a staircase down, take it.

And one thing: turn Maces&Flails off. With a demon whip it's barely useful beyond 12 skill (minimal attack delay). I also think more Shields skill will benefit you more than Dodging. It should be possible to max Fighting and train Shields to 20+ (or 27 too, which is likely) in Zot alone.

Boy am I dumb, I saw the portal to Zot and promptly forgot that I could recall my allies around me to help with the white draconian and ice dragon that had me pinned. I suppose I could blame the lack of rC, but mostly it's all on me for being dumb. I need to remember that when it gets tight that it's a turn based game, I should NOT be rushing any actions.

I suspect that cloak of the vacuum, while great for damage, was hindering your AC with the plate mail.
