Return Of The Tavern Snacks (0.26 flavour)

Hi Crawlers. After a bit of a break, I'd once again like to take up the reins of an ultra casual clan for the forthcoming tourney.

Tavern Snacks is a clan for players who don't want to get super competitive or obsess about ranking, but would appreciate team mates to cheer for, brag to and commiserate with. We've previously had fun in 0.22 and 0.23 (viewtopic.php?f=23&t=25646).

The only requirement to be a Snack is that you abide by the classic Crawl/Tavern "Don't be an arsehole" ethos. Experience, skill, playtime - none of these matter. You can post about your games and interact with other members if you like, or just keep yourself to yourself.

One of the first times I've died in a bailey, and it felt fair.
Berserk wore of too soon, I didn't use enough consumables whist trying to recover, and my tactics and timing were slightly off.

Hi, I have died with my HaEn in Lair 6, very bad play. I usually play fast.

Now I am at Orc 2, with my PaWn of Oka. I have 14 UC skill and blade hands, but I have found the dragon king armour, shield of the gong, manual of polarms and staves - all not used. I consider maybe I switch to the dragon king armour, but then I surely won't be able to cast blade hands for a while. Any suggestions are welcome: I do not plan to play optimally, I rather play fast and fun.

Edit: I can also acquire a crystal plate armour and echant it up to +12 right now. It seems the RNG wants me to have a heavy armour. I am not sure though how useful it is for my palentonga, having Ok. dodging and AC - I have a hard time judging how it would work.

From my half-hour experience with a Palentonga I'd go heavy armour and keep rolling into people, but that's just because it sounds like fun.

I have an AK rolling for the first time ever and I like it. Ds with Powered by Pain and Powered by Death is quite neat and I will try not to die.

I've started a Nemex Choice BaAE. It's going good so far. I've joined Ash and completed a Gauntlet (with one very scary moment involving Miasma and a dispersion trap).
Pretty bad equipment for a character that's done a Gauntles though:

I tried to finish my game before everyone finished theirs, but then I died in the stupidest way immaginable.

I'd finished the game up to Zot:4, with 3 runes, then decided to "do V:5 to make the zot end vault easier".
And then on V:5 I decided to stick around when I had an opportunity to stair-dance

Well, I have died again, now against the Royal Jelly, with a MuAM. I was close to get a Nemelex Choice win, but whatever, I usually die late game. I need to take a short break now - maybe this tournament still won't be the one where I will win.

I've just spend 15 ?Tele on a trove, which gave me that amulet a few consumables and a potion of experience (which I haven't used), and I have a +2 evening star, 1 scroll of brand weapon and 3 scrolls of enchant weapon stashed.
I'm planning to get the snake, shoals and Abyss runes, dive the depths, and bribe Zot (using my 7 scrolls of mapping).

But not killing everything is hard.
I'm looking for a barding in Snake. I didn't check whether Nessos had a barding before I abyssed him. I should have polymorphed him probably.

Any advice?

I'm aiming for XL20 so I can get 1st place, even if it might be too hard for me.

Ponderous strikes me as not likely to go well with trying to not kill things. But I've never attempted a low-XL win, so I'm probably full of it.

petercordia, I wish I had advice to give, but I've never even tried to win at that low a level before -- I'm still exploring the whole "win fast" thing myself. I'll be curious to see how you approach it. Off to a decent start for me -- a rare three-streak, but followed by a very ill-conceived GnAM approach that ended predictably. On to a 15-runer, if possible, for me.

In the end I died whilst diving the abyss.
The abyss rune vaults were too tough for my XL20 character.

Which reminds me, I'd gained too much experience.
I think my approach to the depths was sound - lots of magic mapping combined with a bit of sneaking and abuse of soon-to-be obsolete blink scrolls.
For Zot I think I'd be ok if I'd bribe the branch twice, but I'd blown too much of my gold on equipment TBH. Including 2 aqcuirement scrolls that turned out to be duds.
My eveningstar rebranded to the Spectral Weapon brand, so I decided to stick with the distortion mace.

Maybe if I try it again I should do SLime, and I should dive D:10-15 also.

Congrats, andrew -- good to get a win in. As I expected, my own win rate tanked as I moved to more difficult combos. VSxx is my go-to for extended, but every tourney I have to kill a bunch before I remember how to play (and get lucky, I'm sure). Now CBR2 seems to be down, so I'm stalled out on my stab at a DDFi speedrun (for my lame definition of speedrun ...).

Yeah, Vine Stalkers are probably the species where I have the most sympathy with "game is won by Lair" people; certainly there's a point where it gets rather easy. But not so easy to get there.

Ugh. I just lost a MiBe. Gauntlet minotaur had a +7 glaive of distortion, and that was basically all she wrote.

Question: can getting hit with distortion teleport/blink you in Gauntlet? I realize now that maybe it can't; in which case I could have berserked and had a better chance.

Unfortunately I am a HaEE. Although I can still cast LRR in it with 7% failure rate - maybe I should use it?

I have AC 39 EV 29 without it, and AC 61, EV 14 in it. (But I can not cast iron shot in it yet.)

Depends what other armour you have, I'd say. And whether you can realistically get Iron Shot castable again before too long (I find LRD annoying to use). I'd be tempted anyway if Swamp was in my future, if only to have the chance to melee Lerny in it.

I don't think distortion can teleport you anymore. It can probably still blink you in a gauntlet, gauntlets don't block blinks.

Looking at your character I'd be tempted to switch to he CPA, and turn the character into melee with LRD support. Whilst wearing that thing you have as much strength as int (20), and you don't have any stealth either way. You could even abandon Vehm so you can get the banner.
The simplest decision would be to just commit to being an EE though.

I won, but I was a few hours slow for a Nelemex's choice win. I put on a ring of strength and wore the crystal plate armour. I won't find a similar armour soon.

After a lot of attempts I didn't really get attached to, I've finally got a DDEE to Ely, and I even found some fire dragon scales along the way. Let's hope I don't throw it away like I did with my poison draconian warper.

I was planning to go passwall stabbing, but it seems brute-force LRD is more effective, at least for the moment. I suppose I'll need iron shot too, to deal with OoFs. I haven't trained any conjurations yet though, I hope I'll be able to think of another way (Maybe just Divine Vigour + Divine Protection to try to grab the orb without fighting anything in Zot?). I'm trying to keep my skills as lean as possible, for the low-XL win.

Rules confusion --- just got my second win of the tournament (GrMo^Gozag). It seems I'm not getting the other 5000 points, though; is the issue that it doesn't count as distinct from my DDMo as they're both monks?

Andrew, I don't know. I'd guess you're right in your suspicion though.

I got my first win this tournament. Playing a Formecid Wanderer of Zin (Zin all the way), killing everything like I usually do, I got 15 runes. Tomb was a nightmare, I could have easily died there and I spend all the resources I could.

Congrats! Never won any of those three myself! Now working on a MiFi. Not an exciting combo, perhaps; but I want those 5000 points (and a streak).

Edit: and it just died in Vaults. Encountered Asterion, Sojobo and a red draconian knight together; and waited too long before panicking. No streak for me, apparently.

An excellent tournament for the Snacks, with everyone except me posting successful runs. My best was the recent PaWn of Ash which got two runes before getting overwhelmed in Depths.

I like the Palentonga and food clock is already a distant memory.

distortion is amazing on Palentongas, and a Palentonga with an axe can make extremely good use of Uska.

But I've found that playing a Palentonga with a mace makes me play safer, which leads to better results in the long run.

One of you might appreciate the sheer recklessness of this decision: in an attempt to start a streak (after my FoWn) I started a Naga Delver
I was planning to play a Naga chucker, and I noticed the NaDe spot in Nemelex' choice is still open.

Starting a Naga anything shows you're braver than me, petercordia -- I'm pretty sure the only naga I've ever won was during the melee damage glitch a few years ago. That got me my naga win on my quest to win all the species, and while I feel a little guilty about the * next to that win in my head, I find playing nagas (and Chei) so painful that I just don't try very often. Right now I'm trying to come off of a Nemelex choice win (GhVM) with a MiNe of Ely. We'll see how it goes...

I actually thought that was going to be it for me as I play very slowly, but I've started a TeDe now - got it up to D1 and XL5, so there might be a chance, but Tengu are so squishy. My advice for Pa is to use the long-range headbutt ability that makes it so appealing , but don't get so carried away you find yourself surrounded.

I am a long blade user (BaWz), currently using a demon blade of flaming, and the singing sword is available for 3200 gold... Where, this is a lot, but would it worth it? Is it a good artefact now?

Also, does pearl dragon armour actually good? An unenchanced one is available for 3500 gold... seems a little bit expensive for an unenchanted armour.
