YASD: TeTm^Ash (Tournament game)

Right from the start I've never trained UC, because the transmuter playstyle anti-synergises with Tengus. Beastly appendage and Sticks to Snakes have been nice though. I've had some nice horns and a friendly snake for every hard fight. (Except the minotaur, i just realise, where I could have died :oops:)
The game has been trolling me with a general lack of remove curse scrolls. I had a dozen scrolls including some very valuable ones, such as summoning, as well as a bunch of stuff I wanted to try on, before I got my first remove curse scroll. That was after I got shafted D:6 -> D:9 and climbed all the way back up to D:6, and just a few turns before I found the Temple, where I converted to Ash.
After being shafted to D:9 I decided to wield-id my artefact longsword (without ?rc available) because I didn't think that punching my way up to D:6 was feasible. The +1 long sword of Slow Death {freeze, rF++ Int+4 Dex-3} isn't amazing, but it was good enough to fight my way to the temple, and has been very good in Swamp and the Gauntlet (more on that later).
Diving Lair (for a tournament challenge) I was only swamped by enemies once, in a situation where I could flee to deep water, and I only met one hydra, who forgot about me after spending a few turns out-of-LOS. Yay for stealth!
Being able to hit & slow enemies whilst running away from them was also helpful. It was really nice in Lair that my sword was freezing :)

L:5 contained a gauntlet, and I'm very happy I was able to make it after dipping into L:6.
I fought my way though a cell with 2 swamp worms, who I separated using doors & LOS tricks and then beat using some horns and a snake. In that second fight I wasn't quite careful enough and had to quaff a heal wounds.
After that were 2 fire-themed vaults, and rF++ was really useful :D
(I actually got up to rF+++ and used might for the second fire-themed vault.)
I engaged the Minotaur using !Invis, !Might, Beastly appendage, and Confusing Touch, and I still could have died. Luckily I didn't :) I don't know whether I could have done anything better. Snakes might have caused him to throw his javelins, and after confusing him !Lignification didn't seem like a good idea any more.
It was nice that Ash semi-identified the items in the gauntlet before I fought for them. Otherwise I might not have chosen the path that got me the +4 pair of gloves of Nedu (worn) {MR+ rCorr}, and instead might have ended up with the amulet "Ocsitoogiu" {Harm *Drain rElec rF- Dex+4}, which would have been frustrating.
The Minotaur guarded some very nice loot, including a ring with invis :)

If I could ask some advice:
1) I still only have curse scroll, but I have now found a scroll of acquirement. I hope to use the scroll to get a good pre-cursed sword. Is it worth training some shield skill before doing so, or am I underestimating 2-handed weapons, or would you advice something else entirely? (I have a +1 large shield of poison resistance)
2) which of the following armours looks better?

I died trying to get into Zot at XL 20 (for a tournament challenge) :cry:

It was going well, though I had had to take a few risks. I had successfully obtained 3 runes and dived down to Depths:5, and was in the process of thinning out the end vault so that I could pop into Zot.

I'm a bit sour about it because I only died because a draconian read a scroll of summoning. It just feels really bad when enemies read scrolls of summoning.
I was also too tired to be playing this risky floor. Should have waited till tomorrow..
