YaSD: My First (somewhat successful) Character

Edit 2: Welp, that was a really fun character. Ended up heading back Lair because I hadn't made it to 8 yet (I had stopped at 6, thinking that was the end for some reason, no idea why). Ended up finding a room full of something, teleported out after being swarmed, to only teleport in to the middle of them. Oh well! Had a lot of fun, learned a lot, and I think I'm going to try it again!

Posted an edited character dump.. took out monster death list and map, but left the history.

//Original Post
Been playing for a while on and off, just picked up crawl again -- much to my dismay. Really haven't gotten a character passed level 5/D:6 without exploding to some random, yet awesome, reason. Been learning as I go, discovered some character guides on the wiki that I've been following. Had a somewhat successful[1] VpAs make it to level 9 and get popped by Erochla because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. Fast forward to today, got a SpEn to level 9, and feel pretty comfortable with it. From my understanding, I'm about to hit mid-game, haven't found any branches yet -- though when I do I'm going head first in to them to conquer, rape or pillage anything I can get my tiny spriggan hands on.

Some notes, if they're worth anything
* I chug potions of mutation like they're water.
* My go-to combo is Ensorcelled Hibernation/Stab, and I've become pretty reliant on it for winning fights

My questions are:
* Which branch should I attempt first? The first one I find, or should I skip any I find for one in particular?
* Is there anything I should be on the look out for?
* I've been kind of unlucky[2] when it comes to gear, anything I should be on the look out for?
* What other things should I be on the look out for?
* When this character dies (as all mine inevitably do), what would should I try next?

[1] - Successful to me. He was a ton of fun; I'm really going to have to try that combo again.
[2] - unlucky in my opinion, though I may not be at all. I've really have no way to judge other than your opinions.

And any helpful hints/suggestions/comments/criticisms/questions/name calling/hints, I really enjoy this game immensely and am looking for all kinds of hints or tips that I might not be aware of. There's so many intricacies that I know I'm missing, and would love for them to be pointed out!

Thanks in advance, and be on the lookout for my ghosts. I'm sure they're everywhere by now.

Edit - 09/25/2011 - Updated my character dump. :D

Re: CiP: My First (successful) Character

I'd recommend unburdening yourself as this has all sorts of side effects to it.

General recommendation is Lair first.

When you die, I'd recommend finding a class and sticking to it so that you can really learn that class.

It is very important that you *not* do this.

Its so much fun though...

Took me a while to stop chugging all mutation potions. Now I wait to do it until I have a few Cure Muts stashed.

Re: CiP: My First (successful) Character

I'll second the recommendation to avoid being burdened. You're probably getting away with it due to being a spriggan, but it's still not a good idea. The temple is a popular place to stash stuff, since no hostile monsters will spawn there.

Dispel undead is a really handy spell, which I recommend. IIRC undead will be immune to your disabling spells, though not to your stab attacks. Dispel undead will be great if they wake up.

Quaffing potions of mutation is fun, but there are some really horrible mutations out there, which a low level character doesn't stand much chance of surviving. And potions of cure mutation are really really rare. So if you must quaff them (and I admit that I sometimes do myself), do it on the early levels where you won't mind so much if something awful happens. (It is fun, though. When I play hobbits, I can rarely resist quaffing at least one. I guess I see all my hobbits as gamblers!)

Re: CiP: My First (successful) Character

Welcome to SpEn family! This is one of the classes which never lose attraction even after you win some of them.
I must admit I absolutely adore mutation potions :) they are a significant part of what I like in the game and add a TON to replayability. I quaff all of them in most of my games and never regret it.

Hibernation is going to serve you for almost all the game, even late-game monsters subdue to it pretty well, up to Vaults:8 (though I successfully hibernated draconians in Zot some versions ago). The second most important spell is Confuse (for undead mostly). You may find Invisibility desirable as a lot of monsters don't see invisible (so much fun stabbing six-pack-O'Yaktaurs without anyone waking up). The best weapon for you would probably be quick blade of pain (Captain's Cutlass for pain-resistant monsters). Put on a buckler as soon as you find one.

Check my 15-rune Kiku SpEn experience if you like.

Woo.. hit level 11, found both the Lair and Orcish Mines entrances in the same room, found the Labyrinth and dominated that pretty easily. Things are going pretty smooth!

Took everyone's advice and started a stash in the Temple... now I need to figure out what is important enough to keep on me, and what can be stored.

Don't ever say that... Xom reads the forums and usually takes extra shifts on the RNG.

Found a couple of beehives in the Lair, loaded up on honey and royal jellies -- and several killer bee zombies. I think I'm liking this character more and more.

I had no idea it affected hunger! Another good reason to add to the list.

It affects hunger for everybody, but it hurts worse for spriggans because of their limited food selection.
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

It also increases your delay when climbing staircases. No "oh good, that hydra is one square away" when you're burdened!

Might as well move that to Lair:2 now that you've found Lair.

Re: YaSD: My First (somewhat successful) Character

Bad teleport to escape death dumped me into a frog swarm. Stinking teleports! Great fun, though. Edited original post with final character dump.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
