This is only my 2nd win and first berserker (the other one was a MiFi^Okawaru).

This win actually felt pretty easy, despite the fact that I was unusually careless for much of the early game.
I'd just had another MiBe that I'd spent hours on killed in depths, so I was pretty frustrated and just used o and tab pretty much all the way to the first 2 runes in this game.
After that I figured that the character was worth preserving, so I slowed down a bit and took more care.
Despite my carelessness, I didn't really have too many near-death experiences. Consequently, I finished the game with heaps of unused consumables.

I love, love, love the vampiric brand.
Trog gifted me a vampiric executioner's axe relatively early on. I was a bit hesitant about using it straight away because my axes skill was only in the high teens at the time, but it made a huge difference. I would come out of most fights with full or almost full HP.

I also love reflection. I wore a plain amulet of reflection and later a souped-up version with Str+7 and SH+3 for most of the game. It's funny to see a giant killed by his own boulder.

Also wore a scarf of spirit shield for a large part of the game. Normally I wouldn't on a high HP, low MP character, but I figured I had enough AC and resistances that a cloak wasn't really worth it.

I've struggled with berserkers in the past, often getting killed in the post-berserk slowdown.
Lately, I've been much more judicious in the use of berserk, avoiding it if there's any chance of it wearing off before the fight is over.
I've also changed my training strategy with melee characters lately. I used to only train fighting and weapon to start with and added in dodge and armour later. Now I train them all from the start with weapon focussed. Later on, I switch focus to fighting.

After 2 wins with melee-based characters, I feel like I want to branch out and try for a win with a spellcaster.
Any suggestions for a fun and not too hard caster? (I've had quite a few goes at Gargoyle Earth Elementalist before and am a bit bored with it, so not that.)

Draconian Conjurers make for a good start. Once the 7th level colour sets in, you also get a nudge towards future spells via the aptitude change. The innate AC and health also helps.
Demonspawn Elementalists are also good, my personal recommendation would be DsAE. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=26039
