How will I kill myself

So this has been a weird run, I decided to roll a VpEn, because I wanted something kind of brainless and easy and I hadn't played one in a while. So I rapidly went about my buisiness doing the kinds of things that one does as a VpEn (stabbing things, mostly)

I had some very strange earlyish things happen:

I chose WuJian because he pairs very nicely with a hex-stabber (basically I you can use lunge to stab things one square away, and whirlwind and wall jump to stab at multiple things at a time, with more than one attempt if you've confused them all)

My intent at that point was to hopefully pick up something nice weapon wise to pair with Wu Jian's less stabby parts and just go to town as a vampire tabber when hexing wasn't an option.

One of the nice things about VsEn is being shafted twice for 3 levels from 4->7 then from 5->8 actually wasn't a "Oh god damn I have to flee everything because it's going to kill the crap out of me" kind of experience being stupidly stealthy, fast when needed, and having effective disablers on tap meant I was realitvely safe (dispite my pitifil HP pool and poor defenses for the shafted-to levels) Also I think the new shafting might be turned up a little high, being shafted not once, not twice, but three times for three levels before the end of the lair is not something I've ever experienced with the old-school traps.

Anyway, Selecting Wu Jian and exploring out the levels pre-lair I decided that my +0 robe of nothing (really all you stupid orc mages with no-ego robes?) was pretty pathetic, and since I had a +1 cloak, and +0 gloves at that point, There was a big annoying pack of Death Yaks hanging out at the lair entrance, and I didn't really want to deal with just my starting spells, a +0 draining dagger, 3% confuse chance and 5 AC+14EV against them (I mean I could've kited them one at a time and eventually killed them all, dazzling spray being at least normally effective against them, but that sounded horribly annoying to me) I decided to see if I couldn't pick up some tools or spells to help deal with them, or at least add a little meat to me to make slogging through them less patience-trying. So I cleared out D:9 and then decided to work on D:10 (it's my experience that D:10 often involves a small difficulty bump over D:9)

It did, but nothing I couldn't handle and boy did the rewards pan out, the first thing I encountered was a very persistant Urug, combined with some annoying freinds that I could use for cover, I lured the lot of them back to the upstairs and dispatched them, urug himself requiring the use of a consumable, because in addition to his normal javalin throwing ranged damage annoyance, he was using a +4 demon trident of venom, I promptly absconded with that little treasure and found Harold (Who is definitely nastier than he used to be) guarding a couple scrolls of acquirement, I acquired armour twice (having my top end weapon skill being short blades at that moment *and* having a top-tier endgame worthy weapon in hand already made choosing weapons pretty unappealing, and I still had two unfilled armour slots, so even a +0 something would be of help there) so what I got was:

Holy crapo, I had already kind of assumed I was going one handed so the shield is a nice bonus, but the boots mean I get to leverage my enchanter skills *with* this nice primary weapon *and* WuJian? Bad ass!

Skulked around the rest of D:10 and found Snorg, now Snorg is normally "possibly dangerous" like if he gets up to you and is berserked he can do some serious damage, and of course my first confuse failed and he berserked, so I batformed and let him chase me until it wore off and it took like 6 more tries at 51% (Seriously I do feel like I frequently fail an unexpectedly large percentage of the time, I had a 49% hex chance fail 18 times in a row this game, yikes that's really long odds) before I caught him and turned him into dead troll, and pleasantly he left me with a +2 troll leather armour to replace my +0 leather armour (which had replaced my +0 robe) not amazing but definitely an upgrade

Since then I've gotten my dTrident to min delay, gotten shields up to 10 and am now using the shield of resistance (i did have a buckler I used for a little while while I was raising skills) and I cleared up to D:14 and cleared spider:3 (I ran out of blood potions just now, otherwise I wasn't really having any problems and could've just kept going to get the rune)

I've picked up some non-starting spells (finally) including passwall, which has been rediculous with a dtrident and the boots (Passwall into an area, poke everything in range to death with one hit each, if there's stuff 3 steps away, wall leap and kill them all with arial sleep stabs, like seriously nutso)

At this point I feel like I will certainly do something dumb to kill myself, but the question is, what's the most likely candidate, I don't feel like I could lose because this character doesn't have enough power, I could probably just cruise through the rest of the game on the existing power curve and be fine with virtually no additions (I would like to upgrade jewelry and some armour slots, obviously, and probably rebrand my dtrident to something more valuable later, but those are optional and certainly will come along through regular game play)

I suspect my downfall will come from trying to get that hex on something that just refuses to be hexed (even though it has a high chance of success) and not running away instead when I really should just give up and come back with full health/MP

I rounded a pillar in vaults:2 found myself face to face with a curse skull (must've been near the entrance to the crypts I suppose) while I was trying to escape, he tormented me down to around 35 life (3 torments in 5 moves, what the heck, vampire-undead-ness, what good are you if you can't help me shrug off some torments, the other two actions on his part generated about 7 summoned undead). I had tried to flee immediately, but he'd already gotten me surrounded with summons before I could get out of his LOS. I was really trying to avoid using the only blink scroll that'd generated so far, I should've burned it right away, but I couldn't blink out of his LOS from the position I discovered him in, and didn't have a second blink scroll. I died ignominiously to a summoned jiangshi before my tp went off, I suspect it was the phantasmal warriors that did the lion's share of my remaining health.

Definitely could've made it out if I'd reacted better at the start, but I backed away from the combat far too quickly and without the required attention to what each button press was causing. Reacting to the situation *before* it went horrible would've been called for here, but that's what you get for playing while tired.

It is weird that the entrance is guarded by the toughest enemy you can find in the branch. The only similar example I can recall is that sometimes you see death yaks at the Lair entrance. Coming up next: an orb of fire on U:5.

Fwiw i never actually *saw* the entrance to the crypt, that it was part of an entrance vault is speculation.
