CIP - DSCr of Ash: now YASD

Short version: Mid-game stabber (Nightstalker 2 + Thin-Skeletal 3) trying to pick a secondary damage option: long-blade melee, or summoning (found grand grimoire), or necromancy (book of unlife), or fire/earth/poison conjuration (young poisoner's, conjurations[fire+earth], power).

Long version: Started out as a DSCr, expecting to go for a mostly melee approach. And then the RNG started. Early game went sortof according to plan. Wanted to go maces and flails, eventually leading to a demon whip, and I found a decent plain whip (+2,+2) early on. Got talons on Lv2, so fine, no boots of speed in the late game. Then nightstalker, not terrible, reduces the number of smiters I'll have to deal with at one time, and I can sneak up a little easier. Cleared an ossuary and picked up a lot of scrolls. Then, it happened: Thin skeletal structure. Time to switch gears and stab.
I've gotten the combo once before and died soon afterwards, but I've played enough SpEn's since then to get the stabber basics down, at least through the midgame. I had picked up a book of Dreams and an amulet of clarity as well, so Hibernation and Intoxication could keep me stabbing things for awhile. Without the spriggan speed, though, I wouldn't be able to kite away from danger as easily. I figured it would be better to see it coming, so I went Ashenzari at the temple (makes up for slow leveling, plus, I'd be able to rebalance skills once the short blades stopped working as well).
After the initial pain of training the first levels of stabbing and short blades, the early mid-game was a breeze. Nothing saw me coming and lvl2 nightstalker and lvl3 thin skeletal came quickly. Cleared most of Orc (thanks to a randart sabre of orc slaying), and Lair down to 7 (except for 5 death yaks on L5), hive, elf 1, and started in on swamp. I had a bad stair dancing experience entering shoals, so it may have to wait a little. Dungeon is mostly clear down to D16, except for Nikola wanting me dead on D14 and a sleeping Nessos who is a little too close to some mottled drakes.
Anything I can find alone, or pull away from the mob I can generally sleep or confusa-stab. My main problem right now seems to be dealing with mobs, so I'm trying to decide which direction to take for supplemental/non-stab damage. I've been leaning back towards my original melee plan, but with long blades instead. Basically, stab it. If it lives, slash it till it doesn't. I have some decent spellbook's though, and I could spam butterflies until I can use that grand grimoire, or go conjurations for supplemental ranged damage, especially since I'll be binding my weapon again, once I find a decent mid-game one. I could go necro as well, but I've only got Unlife (twice, and animate dead and regeneration from other books).

I'd personally go for Necromancy. Now I do not have a whole LOT of experience with this game, but let me explain my reasoning:

Very recently I picked up two Grand Grimoires, and if I recall correctly Haunt can be found in it. And Haunt is quite amazing, especially if you can find a way around the sickness it causes.

Since you have a book that has Raise Dead and Regeneration, The book of Unlife would be just fine. The zombies and such do not dispell after a while, and there is no chance of them getting raised hostile as is the case with some summons in my experience. Abominations from Twisted Resurrection can follow you down stairs as well, and if you let them wander about the level they can cause quite a bit of havok while you sneak around. Recall would of course come in handy during a panic, and when you want to bring the abominations down a level.

So yeah. But again I am not the most savvy when it comes to this game, so take that with a bit of salt I think.

Train air and conjurations until you have Poisonous Cloud online. At this point, you should have enough conjurations to grandfather in Mystic Blast and air won't be wasted because you'll want Deflect Missiles eventually anyway. Poisonous Cloud will kill nearly anything in Shoals, Elf, and Vaults, which will buy you enough loot-searching time to train for your next step. Invisible stabbing will take care of most other things, particularly in Shoals.

If at some point a book with Tornado spawns, congratulations, you win the game! Assuming no loot at all spawns, zombie mobs pair up very well with Poisonous Cloud by pinning your enemies in place. Zombies are immune, so you can drop it on the front lines, and your enemies have to carve through your zombies getting more poisoned the entire time. Then there's time to build up for Haunt and whatnot.

What's the deal with your equipment, by the way? You have a helm with (-3AC, +4 int) and boots with (+3AC, -4 int). I have a hard time believing that this is your best choice. There should be something better to work with than ring mail, too. Either some branded light armor or hunt through Swamp for some swamp dragon armor, depending on which way you want to go.

Thx. Both decent suggestions. Between the two, the poison route makes a lot of sense, especially regarding crowd control. And the upgrade route through the rest of air magic is nice option to have if the right spellbooks spawn. Or, like you mentioned I could do both and add some zombie meatshields to the poison mix.

Re: the equiptment. Right, forgot about that before dumping the character. I was running low on curse armor (most of my recent prayers just netted me more curse jewelry and weapon), and those three were already cursed. It at least gave me extra XP, and will identify everything else I can find in the meantime. I was just sticking with slightly inferior armor until much better stuff came up to spend the scrolls on, and my other current options for helmet and boots are only marginally better. The ring mail is going to have to go tho, if only to avoid miscast effects. I'll switch to either a +1 robe of magic resistance, or +2 leather rF+, and spend an enchant armor on one of the two. Most of my randart light armors have been a bust so far. In fact, my treasure trove was all armor acquirement, most of it was heavy armor, and it seems like Ash does funny things to acquirements, as a good third of it was cursed with mixed +s and -s.

Forgot about this character for a little while to focus on TrHu of Xom madness, and other fun builds, time to come back to this one.

Poison cloud has done wonders for damage output. Still no high-level air spells, so I may have to reconsider and go necromancy /summoning after all. Invisistab is online now, as is Alistair + stab. Cleared most of the lair branches up to level 4, orc, elves to 3, cleared all of lair 8 except the vault (demon vault, need to think about how to handle it), dungeon to 20, and was working my way through vaults. Left a couple of sleeping uniques along the way until stabbing was high enough to take them down (I'm looking at you, Mennas, Nikola, and Mara or heck, I'll just ignore them entirely). Starting clearing the area around the stairs at vault:6 and a lich pops up (next to a storm dragon, nice). Dragon hasn't noticed me, but the lich did. I wasted a turn on Alistair's (stupid poison res :oops: ). Lich summoned 1's. Now I have a green death (whatever) and a executioner (d'oh). Staying and fighting is not this character's strong suit, so I'm planning my escape. Two ideas so far:

1) Read teleport, blink scroll, potion of agility, potion of speed, move around the corner of the room, mystic blast the executioner until teleport kicks in. (still invisible, flying, rplms, so I'm not TOO worried about wherever I teleport to, even though I only started clearing this level).

2) blink, blink (as close to downstairs as possible, the two upstairs are too far away, tiny LOS with nightstalker3), agility, uncurse (weapon), eq staff of demonology, abjure till the executioner goes away, bone lantern and run to the upstairs, use the downstairs if too many summons catch up while I'm trying to abjure the exectutioner.

Well, if you have abjuration, 1 or 2 casts of that will be the most efficient way to rid yourself of the executioner. Mystic blast should kill a regular lich in ~3-4 shots. I don't believe storm dragons have Sinv so you should be able to just back up a couple steps without pulling it. If you pull the dragon then just blink/tele as you describe and come back when they have separated. Maybe instead of tele you can take a couple steps and blink to use the stairs (the executioner will catch you but won't hurt that bad for the couple of rounds it would take to get LOS on the stairs) and come back onto the level from a different stair(random tele can screw you and I find stairs to be a much more controlled escape). You can definitely handle the lich 1 on 1 tho.

Abjuration is all you need for the 1s, but don't even bother with the rest once the executioner is gone because you can just run away. I wouldn't recommend fighting the lich and the dragon at the same time, but once they're separated the lich is about equivalent to a late-game unique in threat. As long as it doesn't know paralysis and you take it seriously, you should be okay.

Hah! Funny you mentioned that. I escaped, but not without getting paralyzed. Blink to the edge of the room on the left. Move diagonally underneath it to keep the lich out of LOS. Uncurse weapon. Equip staff of demonology. Abjure (fail). Take a couple hits from Executioner. Quaff agility to reduce damage. Abjure (fail). Lich appears, now with a Blue Death in tow, next to the Green Death. Abjure: goodbye executioner, both death's remain. Quaff speed. Lich paralyzes me for a couple turns. Relatively unharmed, but now there are two liches and two deaths. Use last blink scroll to cover most of the distance to the upstairs. Equip bone lantern to ditch LOS and distract. Summon a couple butterflies for good measure and walk to the upstairs. Lose the lich by the time I make it upstairs. Yaktaur captain and a yaktaur are waiting for me. Still invisible. Invisistab both and have yaktaur for lunch.

Blech. Not pretty. I need a better source of abjuration (haven't found the spell yet) so I can keep my weapon cursed. Need space I my spell list for control teleport until I have a better source of teleport control, too.

Right, then. Good thing you had those consumables. Don't go back and fight the lich that knows Paralyze, at least not until you have a better alpha strike or an amulet of stasis. If an option never turns up, sneak down to Vaults 7 and try not to make too many trips through 6. Shoals 5 should be perfectly safe now, particularly if you spend most of the time invisible. D21-27 is going to be no worse than Vaults, and probably will have safer terrain for a stabber. Elf 5 has fragile denizens that are all vulnerable to Poisonous Cloud and Intoxication. The Vaults loot will still be there when you're done elsewhere.

Argh. Summon swarmed by a poison resistant deep elf demonologist.
KoboldLord was right, Shoals5 and Swamp5 were cake. Picked up a couple levels and 40% torment resistant along the way. Cleared everything outside the vault on Elf5. Pulled a couple elves at a time out of there with poison cloud. Intoxicate and stabbed if they didn't go quickly or got close. IMB'd if they resisted poison (ran into a few like that before I got into trouble). Played it badly + bad luck. Didn't cover my escape well enough while venturing deeper in the vault and didn't quaff the sparkling fountains. Demonologist resisted poison, so no cloud or intoxication. Abjuration failed until the third try on the first Ice fiend and executioner, and by that point I would have been better off taking out the demonologist with IMB first (I think this was my biggest mistake) and then trying to abjure the uglies, even though a sorcerer showed up in the meantime. Teleport threw me over only three squares. Blink scroll and blinking spell were useless. Torment resistance failed every time. Maybe if one of those had gone right I could have made an escape, but relying on luck gets you killed.

Still, this mutation set was admittedly one of the best stabber combos I've played, and it fit nicely with Ashenzari. Most creatures stayed asleep until I wanted to wake it. Invisi and confusa- stab took out most of the rest. Poison cloud helped with mobs. Got two runes.

stuff like this happens, especially in elf 5. i had some very close encounters there, some i survived, some i didn't.
