Help me learn from my mistakes, dead DEWI

Generally I know when I make a mistake what I did wrong or maybe didn't understand but lately with DEWI I feel like I am getting better at avoiding YASD. The problem is I burn through consumables until I am out and then in lair, orc, I am not able to escape death. My best run with DEWI was to Vault:5 where I was forced to teleport and couldn't escape, which is fine. With this character here I think I am just not playing optimally and as a result having to burn through escapes. Any advice for me? Am I wasting skill points on dodging, fighting, and shields? I was planning on basically going conjuration earth.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help me learn from my mistakes, dead DEWI

The boots are bad. -3 AC for 4Int is a bad trade. Your shield skill should be 4; you have relatively high evo for your point in the game. Your conjurations are a bit high compared to the secondary schools - bolt of draining which you used often was at 5.

Since all of these are relatively minor problems I suspect that the main problem is that you need to retreat/lure more. Use more stairs, dont fight stuff at the expense of consumables, use your stealth and just dont fight shit.

Wz, the abbreviation is Wz.

You're training too many things.

DEWz is also a pretty weak combo. If you're set on the combo specifically then, okay, that's fine. If you want to cast magic at stuff to kill them try something like MfIE or DrWz instead, it's much better.

Aside from this, the mistakes that tend to directly kill you also tend to be mistakes that aren't apparent in a morgue, so, sorry about that.

Thanks. I will be more conscious of how much I lure monsters.

I was wondering about those boots.

Thanks.

Btw, I have a lot of wins with dcss but few caster wins, learning how to be a caster is a new skill for me.

Re: Help me learn from my mistakes, dead DEWI

GrEE, Dr(Cj/FE), MfIE are all much easier combos than DE--.

Generally your elemental schools should be roughly equal to your conjurations skill level.

The most important thing about casters is knowing when to run. Lure early and often. Treat 1/2 mp as death. It may be a little overkill, but it will get you in the habit of retreating to staircases while you still have mana.

Re: Help me learn from my mistakes, dead DEWI

The thing in this morgue that screams out to me is that you have iron shot at 1% fail and a reasonable spellpower at XL14, and you're still pouring more than half of your experience into magical offenses. Iron shot is a spell powerful enough to win the game with; if you have it castable this early, you have plenty of XP to spare on defenses. I would focus exclusively on dodging + fighting here, and perhaps short blades: a well-trained elec dagger will save you so much MP because it can kill low-tier threats with ease.

To be honest, you don't even need any weapons training to kill Lair/Orc threats with an electric dagger.

You are not supposed to attack Lair/Orc threats with your backup melee weapon as a spellcaster...

I would wear +1 robe of MR intead of +2 robe of resistance (I know some players will disagree but I don't care, with good tactics and Blink you cannot die in orc unless you are paralyzed).
Also I would id that unknown amulet and wear it (magic regeneration) instead of reflection. Also I would put some stat points into Dex.

Edit. Also I hope you were wielding staff of conjuration by default.

Thank you. I had assumed that increased skill greatly improved damage rates. Now that I think about past experience the spell is more important than any skill in determining the damage.

You are correct, now that I think about it, I died due to magic damage but not elemental, had I been wearing the robe of MR I would likely still be alive.

Re: Help me learn from my mistakes, dead DEWI

LRD would have been good to have a spell that damages a group of monsters and is smite targeted.

For DE Cj/FE/EE/IE/AE/Ne are generally easier, but Wz is OK, especially with Vehumet. With non-Wz, you might consider Sif for easier access to utility spells and channeling. Wz needs something from outside the starting spellbook for killdudes by around mid-Lair, and Vehumet provides this (aligned with DE apts, unlike say Okawaru). Kiku would work, too, but is less blasty, if that's what you're after.

Later, consider Abyss (train some Stealth and try to use quieter spells, like Bolt of Fire, instead of louder, like Fireball, and be careful regenerate MP when possible) or Slime (get some AOE blast like Freezing Cloud) instead of Vaults:5. Refilling MP fast enough in V:5 is tough.

FE is my default for easy caster and DE is great here too. Conjure Flame saves your low HP, Sticky Flame makes you train defenses.

Sticky flame doesn't really make you train defenses. Most monsters are speed 10, and you can easily kite them with sticky flame.

Sticky Flame takes 1 turn to cast and affects adjacent monsters only. It means you will get attacked once by every speed 10 monster which you are sticky-flaming.
I love Sticky Flame vs fast monsters with high EV and low HP like Spiny Frog, Black Mamba, Blink Frog.
Monsters with higher HP (Elephants, Death Yaks) don't die to a single Sticky Flame and come in packs so EV is very helpful.

Just a note (I don't know if this is clear to you, as you said you have a lot of wins but was talking about "magic damage"): MR does not affect the drain life spell of soul eaters (rN helps, at rN+++ you're immune) or smiting from orc high priests (nothing helps). MR is the resistance against enemy hexes such as confusion, paralysis, and banishment. And yes, it is very important (aim for extremely or incredibly resistant when you can).

I don't train defenses any more with FE than with any other caster, and I can easily kite death yaks and elephants with sticky flame. If this isn't possible for you then there's something seriously wrong with the way you're kiting. (For example, if you're trying to take the whole pack out at once).

And like you said, sticky flame is amazing against spiny frog/mamba/blink frog, and combined with the other spells in your book there's no reason you'd need more defenses than any other caster to take them out. If anything, you can get away with less defense than some caster backgrounds because your spells are so high damaging *and* continue to do damage over time.

I was talking about new players, not about me. I train Dodging for FE the same way as for other casters. But new player can be tempted to ignore defense if they use ranged attacks (Air Elementalist, Summoner). Though probably you are right, that Fireball makes it tempting to ignore Dodging.

Thanks for clarifying that, I had assumed (bad habit) that MR protected against non elemental magic damage. What protects against pure conjuration magic? And when I say I have a lot of wins most of them are with melee type characters.

AC and EV. AC and EV protect vs elemental magic too unless it is something like Fireball (only AC applies) or Freeze (none applies).

Trying it, going short blades. Just cleared D:5 and it feels pretty strong. Got some lucky drops (an elec dagger and blowgun+needles on D:4 and a +4 slay ring on this level) but even before that, it's been lure, 'zerk, tab, eat, rinse, repeat. Running around in +0 ring mail, just found a buckler.

I think going with long blades would be better, the difference between 0 and -1 aptitudes is insignificant and Trog can gift really great long blades while really great short blades don't exist.

If I was playing wizard I would go 50/50 on magic dart and stealth until dart was maxed. The stealth keeps you safe, and the dart is silent. The other Wizards spells depend on your desired style of play, and don't really need them all.

Could try leveling offense a few levels, then defense, and repeat that cycle.

For defense Fighting, Dodging, Shield(when u find a usable buckler), Armour(if you have the STR for a nice suit).

The less defense you have the more u need to keep a distance.

Um, you'd give up Conjure Flame and Meph Cloud, two of the most OP spells in the game so you can go on killing things with a lvl 1 spell?

Whenever someone says to train stealth early game on something that isn't an enchanter, that should be the signal that the rest of their advice isn't worth reading.

Even for things like NaVM or OpGl? First levels are extremely cheap. I did some calculations recently, it is impossible to not wake up sleeping centaur without training Stealth. I don't train Stealth on D1 of course but on D3-4 getting a few levels can be very useful.

I think early stealth could be very beneficial for Nagas who have enormous apt for it and can't run away. But maybe not!

You're right; I'll probably train up long blades if I find something interesting. Right now I have an elec dagger and it's killing the dudes.

Ydeve there was making an assumption. I never said to give up any spell. Just said you don't need them all learned.

Stealth is good because it's keeps monsters you encounter at the edge of los from waking up right away. Just two ++ or +++ is all you need until the large monsters start showing up.
