YASD: DsVM^Makh 0.17: Mesmerization

I can see why people call VM a difficult background! This is my first one and I’ve had several close calls. Picking up a shortbow from a centaur, who himself almost killed me, was the key that got me through the bottleneck of the first rPois monsters.

RNG has been kind that the spellbooks I’ve found synergize with one another. I’m confident that Ice ought to be my second school of magic. I have both Ozo’s and Condensation Shield, and I also have Bolt of Cold, both Freezing and Poisonous Cloud, and Simulacrum. Both Poison and Cold leave me poorly prepared for undead—is Makhleb good enough, or ought I get Dispel Undead on my way to Simulacrum? The skill 0 shortbow and arbalest have been sufficient thus far for the undead I’ve faced, including a pack of wights, but that won’t last forever.

It looks like I have Mana Shield and Foul Stench for my two Tier II mutations, and I don’t know my Tier III yet. I’m not sure what to do with these, in particular I’ve never had Spirit Shield on a caster before and it worries me since I don’t have any channeling.

I think Bolt of Cold ought to be next, even before Condensation Shield. I can use the XP in Orc:1-3 to get me ready for rPois foes in Lair. Is there any advantage to Poisonous Cloud, now that I have access to Freezing Cloud too and am training Ice? I have 6 levels free so I can learn any one of these.

As for melee I probably will go Long Blades, aiming for the great sword I’m carrying with the scimitar along the way. The +2 short sword of speed is from D:1. I don’t think I’ll train a weapon further until I get all of Bolt of Cold, Condenstation Shield, and a Cloud up and running though. Dispel Undead and Simulacrum would be after getting melee online.

Let me know please if I ought to be doing anything differently.

Freezing cloud is better than poison cloud generally. Poison Cloud + ignite poison is good, but freezing cloud is 3 less spell levels.

I would not go for bolt of cold currently, nor freezing cloud. You have a bolt via makleb (and 8 invocations which you are currently training, which is good).

Your stealth is exceptionally bad.

I would plan on Makleb to get me through lair threats, get my defensive bases up, and aim for bolt of cold to come online between lair 8 and D15. Fcloud comes online in the first s branch, then the game is easy.

I specifically think the great sword is a mistake on this character. Demonspawn + Expensive Magical Caster attack + expensive 2h weapon exp = Bad defenses in s branches, which are typically difficult for DS. I would want my character to build towards a 1h weapon + buckler and intend to transition into a magical staff at some point.

Edit: It may be prudent to train Long Blades up to 6 or 8. Having some kind of functional melee attack (esp in lair) is nice. The +3 greatsword may be the best of your available options, in which case it is your best option, and if it so happens that you end up with a +9 greatsword of flaming because of some lucky scroll RNG, ok, then that works. But that wouldn't be my plan for this character at this time.

Edit 2: Why are you wearing a +0 robe? A +0 leather or a +0 ring mail is better.

Edit 3: 2 wands of paralysis and rPois really takes alot of the teeth out of lair. You can get evo up to ~5 and walk through the place.

I'd probably train m&f for the whip of elec which will do good damage for less investment than the great sword.

Thanks for the input.

Re body armor: The +0 leather gave -1 EV and +1 AC vs the robe, which I consider a wash, with slightly lower spell success. I have Ozo's so AC isn't something I'm that concerned about right now. Good point re Stealth, though. And in general, you remind me that I am still thinking about "moar killdudes!" when they are sufficient for where I am. I should be working on defenses instead. Maybe I should try on a ring mail and see what it does.

I'll not be working on melee for a while yet. I'm carrying the great sword and the scimitar since 1) the great sword is the best weapon I've found thus far and 2) the scimitar is a mid-skill weapon in the same school and also good. If I were to go for the electric melee, I suspect the staff of air is a better bet than the whip in the long run, since I'll be training Evocations for the wands and the elemental evokables I have in a shop (disc, phial, and stone) and Air for the Cloud spell (and already for Mephitic). But the whip is better now (equal chance of electric shock at current Air and Evocables skill levels, but greater electric damage) and it might be better than any of the swords at their current skill levels. I ought to wizmode that.

Mana shield isn't so bad once you get the second fact and you get MP regen. Though I suppose that's less unique now there's a n amulet and a fixedart that both do the same thing.

I've finished L:8 and O:3. Still don't know what my Tier III mutation is!

Good finds were a demon blade of flaming in a Volcano, and a +9 arbalest of velocity in a shop for $256!

I'm not quite sure what to do next. The staff and ring of wizardry open things up quite a bit. I have Spider and Shoals so I can continue with Poison magic for a bit longer before switching to Ice.

After thinking on this for a day, I think I ought to memorize Ignite Poison and Sublimation of Blood, wielding the staff of wizardry and using spells or invocations as my killdudes instead of melee. I will still carry the arbalest as a resist stick against orc sorcerers etc. but still use spells first even then. The staff gets me overwhelmed the hump and let's me use my damaging spells to earn the XP to cast them normally.

This looks like a very good character. I'd go for Fcloud pcloud* now. Double wizardry makes it available early. It can clear sbranches, and you can use the rest of sbranch exp to get longblades to 14 and your physical bases up.

Edit: As you say, you have enough tools to get you through individual encounters.

Edit 2: If you are getting Ignite poison, get pcloud instead of fcloud.

Edit 3: At some point in time before the end of vaults, the most efficent use of XP is going to be phase shift. That is to say, putting enough xp into spellcasting and translocations for castable 8 EV is going to be much more useful than putting xp into armor, dodging, or fighting for your suitability.

My impression of Phase Shift has been that it doesn't last long enough to be worth training up Translocations just for it. But apparently that's wrong.

Another question: the arbalest, is it a trap, or is it my endgame irresistible damage? I have bolt and crowd control found, but not irresistible damage.

If other transloc spells are available, phase shift is good. Otherwise, I'd probably do something else.
I'm not sure about the arbalest, never used them before. I guess look at how much xp you need to sink into it. If it's tons, it's probably a trap. Otherwise, since you don't have any good earth or pure conj spells...
XP is precious until Vaults, where you can branch out without too much worry.

Edit: you're conjurations and other spell skills look really low to me. if you're in the S branches and you aren't feeling much pressure killing things, this means you can probably branch out now if you want to, since you already have the tools to survive without leaning on conjurations.

Phase shift is worth the 5 skill levels as a standalone on light/medium armor chars [see sidebar]. Tloc is never really standalone. Blink and apportion should nearly always be learned, and blink specifically is one spell you -do not want to fail-. Luckily, there is phase shift.

Some people use passage of golubria to great effect, and I respect that, but am not one of them.

Conjurations on this character is specifically less desirable than normal due to demonspawn invocations apts coupled with makleb. He gives you a part bolt part direct damage spell that isn't a long term plan but certainly helps you roll through lair so xp can go elsewhere.

[sidebar] Phase shift was the first spell removed in trunk for a reason. It was removed during the charms reform because it was a no-brainer. Casters can get it online for a trivial amount of xp due to their light armor and spellcasting. Mid armor characters hit the first EV stepdown at 30 EV derived from dex, and phase suddenly becomes much more attractive. Simply being aware that at some point the spell is the most useful XP expenditure for a meaningful boost to your defense (rather than defensive stats properly) creates non-interesting decisions in the game.

My gut tells me this moment happens for this character before the end of vaults.[end sidebar]

I've had trouble with Greater Destruction. It is not reliably a bolt spell, and I've learned not to use ti too close to me because I lack rElec for Orb of electrocution and I usually am not wearing rF for fireball. But I've certainly thrown five Lesser Destructions at a single oncoming opponent several times.

I've highlighted relevant portions of your action table. Notes: You are using the demon blade and arbalest a lot. Spending XP on the arbalest would be a mistake, but it has been functional in lair. I would plan to move away from using it. Crossbows are slow, and a character has more control over the battlefield with quicker actions. Also, at some point, you can pick up a buckler and enhancer staff, which is clearly better.

The use of lesser destruction is a perfect example of why conjurations is less desirable for this character specifically in lair. More xp in conjurations doesn't really deepen/expand your kit your character approaches lair and progresses into it.

However, as previously mentioned, invocations is a short term plan. Relying on Makleb in such a way is not as reliable once your character gets into say, depths or elf. You have already mentioned some of the problems with Greater Destruction. Conjurations will expand your kit once pcloud becomes a justifiable use of xp. You move away from great power that is less than reliable and towards stability.

However, note that evaluating invocations vs conjurations hasn't mentioned the two more powerful skills from makleb, lesser and greater demon. Lesser demon specifically is great to use as you are meleeing things in lair with a demon blade (1408 times already!). I believe you are over using your demon blade and under using lesser demon. It is really good in lair, and especially good to create psuedo 1 on 1 engagements (fights where only one monster can be hitting you at any given turn) in lair's open fields. It allows you to hit things with your sword while playing defensively. They also do acceptable damage at this point in the game.

Greater demon is an amazing ability, but you need to remember 2 things. (1), if possible, cast standing on an up staircase. If it is hostile, retreat and reset. (2) If 1 is not an option, have 2 TP scrolls and a blink scroll. Be ready to read a tp scroll immediately. Be aware that a hostile executioner may pop out and haste itself immediately. Be ready to tele away, and also be ready to tele/blink again if the first teleport takes you all of 2 spaces.

Makleb invocations will never be useless as the game progresses. He specifically gets one last power spike late game when you get aura of abjuration. Abjuration is great versus a variety of dangerous monsters, but is especially nice when it allows you to cast Summon Greater Demon more freely.

Finally, Pcloud and summoning demons work great together.

Thank you so much for the detailed assistance and the time invested in it. I'm in the middle of Orc:4 now and I'll use the demon summoning more in the end vault.

I came to the same conclusion about the arbalest, that it's for it time to go. I'm keeping it as a resist stick for orc sorcerers, but wizmode shows that it already does only half the damage that the demon blade does on generic monsters. Of course, it does it at range. I killed an orc sorcerer with it, for instance, before it even got in range of Mephitic (having run to an upstair upon waking it up.

Double wizardry still doesn't give me PCloud, so I got Ignite Poison for Mephitic. I have the O:4 vault with the tiny little rooms and corridors, so this combo is great for turning hallways into blast furnaces. And I'll want IP anyway in the long run for PCloud.

Done with Orc:4 and D:15. Spider is next. PCloud is almost online with double wizardry. You were right about Summon Minor Demon, it is great. And I also realized that about half of my demon blade strikes are confusion stabs after Mephitic, and I'm just not bothering to switch to the +5 dagger.

Orc:4 shops had both /HW and /Haste! I have all three yellow wands. Also a sweet leather armor dropped that added rElec and Regen+ to MR+ for the cost of 1 AC vs. ego leather I'd been using.

STILL don't know what my Tier III mutation is!

It will be a few days before I get a chance to play again.

Looks good. Don't get cocky, especially in sbranches. Your character has the tools he needs to win any given fight, but he is frail. He is probably frailer than you imagine. Demonspawn take a long time to get fully kitted, xp comes in more slowly than other races, and their racial HP malus all add up. Spider is specifically notorious for eating Low AC casters.

My goals for sbranch xp would be 1) stealth, longblades, dodge to ~14, Armor to the next point of AC, shields to 4 if you ever find a buckler. (2) Pcloud castable without wiz is a minor gain for your character but a major quality of life improvement.

The only spell I would learn at the moment is PArrow if i found it. I wouldn't bother with any other magical spells for now.

I would do elf before vaults on this char. Pcloud + ignite melts elf.

Minor Points:
Mapping the dagger to "w" is a nice thing. Sword is a, staff is b, and you can swap those easilly enough, having the third weapon on w saves a half a thought.

Use those two scrolls of recharging on the haste and heal wounds wand. Great Pickups. Play in spider like you have lots of haste (2 haste pots + wand + recharging). As said before, you are frail, do not underestimate sbranch threats. Using haste liberally is a way of not underestimating threats.

Use up those bolt/hex wands. They should blow up the Spider Vault. You will find more, and wands aren't going to get more valuable.

4 Invis pots will serve nicely vs ghost moths.

If you make it to vaults, put up a dump before you go into it please.

And I in turn am enjoying your advice and attention to my character.

I have been chased out of Spider when I thought I was ready for it several times, so I have a healthy amount of respect for it. Still, I'm going to do it first because poison reasons, and also because the other one is Shoals.

I had pretty much the same skill goals in mind as the ones you recommended, except that I had not intended to train Stealth to 14. With the rElec on my randart leather and having found a disc of storms, I do have a reason to boost evocations. I also have two elemental evokers, phial and stone, waiting for me in a shop.

I do have a buckler, and I've been holding off on it because I'm using the arbalest as a MR resist stick. But I didn't use it much for damage in Orc:4 and I see that it's dispensable. I'm hoping that an earth book spawns, or perhaps Power for IMB or OoD. As soon as another pip of wearable MR comes along, I'm ditching the arbalest and getting a buckler. Still no cloak or gloves have spawned, and just the one hat.

I planned to get Phase Shift before Shoals, but that was all. The thing I feel is missing from my kit is irresistible damage.

I like the "ww" trick for a third weapon slot.

I don't use haste nearly enough. How do you decide when a situation merits it vs when it's a waste?

I've found that if you can blast things at range, Shoals is a lot less dangerous than it would be for a melee-type character. So if you find Spider too hard, you could try dropping in there and taking a look around.

Drop the arbalest at the gates of elven halls and pick of a buckler. Get shields to 4 immediately. Shield in hand is worth more than an MR swap, unless you are in elf (even then, I would never carry a 2h swap for the third pip of MR anyway). MR is useless in Spider. In Shoals fear/mesmerize really aren't that dangerous. You will resist most of it with MR++ anyway.

On haste: Rune Vaults are certainly a good use of haste charges. Terminate the nest with extreme prejudice. Also, sometimes there is a battle at the door to the zone, and it is generally really irritating to stairdance if you get pushed back. After that, just remember that your character is an uncommonly frail species and your physical stats are low, so proceed with caution.

There is not a ton of xp in sbranches, especially compared to vaults. Don't have a grand design to get a new piece of your kit up and running, unless it is named Long Blades. Besides, Longblades to 14 is a major upgrade at this point. Your bases have been neglected. Fighting is Life. Dodge is Life. Stealth is safety. They are really low so the xp can go a long way.

It isn't quite time for phase shift just yet, nor evocations. It will be soon. Stealth is more important.

Edit: You do have irresistible damage. Demons. *Demon Blade of Flaming to 14.* 5 Charges of fireball, 10 charges of lightning bolt, 6 charges of bolt of draining. If it can't be poisoned, you can ignite poison and burn things up in flame clouds. Greater destruction. All of these things together are more than sufficient to kill anything that is generally resistant (demonic crawler, emperor scorpion, ghost moth). To be honest, all of these things together can roll vaults 1-4 unless mennas shows up and 3 shots you with a eudemon blade scimitar of holy wrath.

Your kit is rather large at the moment, more than sufficient to take on the challenges of the day.

IMB is largely outdated (pcloud + ignite) and a waste of 4 spell slots.

It is a bad plan to get both evocations and go deeper into conjurations at this time. It is a bad plan to get iron shot at this time. It isn't a bad plan to do these things over the life of the character, but to pursue any of these at this moment are further neglecting your physical bases.

Let me remind you how many times you have used the sword at this point in time. Let me remind you that your defenses have not improved at all since you got to lair (EV is 17 in both cases, AC was 21 with ozo's expriring, 13 now). Enemies will hit harder now. Enemies will notice you more easily now.

Specifically, with regard to IMB, Book of Earth Spells, OOD, and related: Go through s branches and wait and see what the dungeon has to offer. Look at your character's options at the entrance to vaults and make a decision then. It is much easier to get a level 7 spell up in vaults. It is much easier to set up for a lvl 8/9 spell in vaults. It is much easier to expand your kit in vaults. Right now you are making uninformed decisions about what you want to spend vaults XP on (you haven't seen what loot will drop in sbranches). It is creeping into your decision making on the comparatively smaller XP you gain in sbranches. Have more modest goals with sbranch xp. Be patient, build a sturdy character, and you won't have to worry about being frail when it is actually time to choose the next major acquisition for your kit.

You can have anything you want with this character, but you have to be patient.

Edit2: Take dex on the 18 and 21 level ups.

edgefigaro: I've finished Spider 1-3. N:2 had Jogrun, Asterion and Arachne. I learned from these what "Mephitic is loud" really means. I didn't ever have two at the same time, but each followed on the heels of the previous. Jogrun I woke up fighting spiders, then Asterion showed up after I killed Jogrun. I had to run and come back for him, I killed him with PCloud and lesser demons. Arachne cost me a lot of piety (I'm just barely 6*) because I lost track of her after one of her blinks and my demon horde timed out before I found her again. Also, Major Destruction Orb of Electrocution turned a nexoteq against me, that wasn't fun. So I killed her with PCloud + Ignite and a wand after I tracked her down again. I like her staff of poison, I'm one-shotting anything less than a wolf spider with Venom Bolt.

I concur with your advice about defenses. The only thing I did differently is that I forgot Repel Missles to make room for Conjure Flame for Spider since I've found that so little there avoids it. So I'm afraid I've been doing more of Conjure Flame - Ozo's - demon blade than you'd probably prefer, but I've also almost never lost more than 20% HP doing it. Then, after 100% Shields got my buckler online, I got up to 7.5 in Spellcasting to get RMsl back and put the rest into Stealth until it caught up with Dodging and Fighting, and then went to the skill allocation I have in the dump.

I'm curious what you think about Summon Greater Servant. Ought I at some point train Invocations a bit more? It's current 14% hostile seems a but risky, though I do know Blink and have evokable teleport.

Just noticed I forget to put the Dex+5 ring back on after wear-IDing a ring!

Long blades to 14 is your first priority ATM.

You aren't using pcloud enough (only 6 times, you got it working for sbranches for a reason). It works best if you cast it two or three times. cast it close to you and things will not run through it. Then cast it ontop of the enemies that are stacked up against the clouds and the enemies will charge though the poison. Pcloud + Ignite is more of a novelty for resistant things.

You can also stand in your pcloud. Rpois yo. Try spamming it by staircases when you descend to Spider 4 to get a feel for it safely.

I did haste for Asterion and for Arachne, but I used potions instead of the wand to move towards freeing up an inventory slot.

I can certainly see the benefit of using !Invis on Shoals:4. However, I don't really have a solution for ghost moths right now. No SInv has spawned all game except for a scale mail in a shop I can't afford right now, and it would tank my spell success anyway. Only Ynoxinuls of my Lesser Demons can SInv, and while all of my Greater Demons can I'm feeling like that's too risky right now. Only one ?Fog has spawned, its still in a shop that a piety-sucking distance away. So Conjure Flame and PCloud+Ignite feel like my best bet against them, and I need Inv to keep MP for that. Unless you can suggest a better plan for ghost moths, I'm expecting that if any !Inv that make it through Spider:4 it's a bonus, not a plan.

I am utterly helpless against ghost moths. I led two of them up to Spider:3 by different stairs on two separate occasions, and the first ganged up on me with the second and they came very close to stinging me to death, plus my attributes are all shot. The potion of invisibility was a waste, I have few enough MP that by the time I quaff it, it's mostly gone anyway. Looks like I'm going to have to try Shoals first, until I can get SInv somehow. I'm going to set this character aside until i can get some advice on the ghost moths.

If you can't do spider 4, go to shoals. More generally, if you ever are having too much trouble with one sbranch, go to the other. It will be easier (probably trivial) when you return. It really isn't even important to come back right away and clear out spider 4 after picking up the barnacled rune.

Repel Missiles takes some of the teeth out of shoals. You are a venom mage and everything significant is vulnerable to poison. That should be plenty.

On elf: If you can do vaults after shoals, do vaults. If you can't, do elf 1 and 2.

On Vaults: if mennas shows up, -skip the floor-.

On Ghost Moths: If they are too much trouble, go to shoals. A floor of xp in spider 4 and whatever spawns on the floor isn't worth that much difficulty.

Shoals should be easier on food than spider is. Eat those pizzas. The food situation will get better. Soon it will be time to train spellcasting significantly more, and spell hunger will be less of a concern. Til then, well, that is what permafood is for.

Food being eaten strategically is what food is for. That is why this resource exists. Again, remember that you aren't monstrously powerful atm, but will be getting stronger soon. Use consumable resources in the meantime.

You spread your permafood eating around. This is a mistake. Eat all your pizza first. Then eat the least plentiful ration type. You want as much nutrition to be concentrated in one ration in your inventory for inventory space management, and your permafood eating choices should favor hoarding your most plentiful ration and eating everything else.

I'm not a big fan of saving fruit for a 1 turn nutrition bonus, I prefer to play at engorged in zot and mock death cobs. Other players disagree and keep fruit around. Death cobs hunger attack is removed in trunk.

Did you turn off jerky/jelly pickup?

Edit: Greater Servants should demolish ghost moths. As long as you can use greater servant in a controlled area (i.e. a fully cleared spider 3 floor can tele away, or alone at the upstairs of spider 4 can retreat upstairs) it is rather safe. The place greater demons becomes problematic is if you use it as an emergency button. It can make a bad situation significantly worse.

Okay, I guess that is the resource I haven't tried yet. And if they come up hostile? I'm looking at 9% hostility, that's better than it was before I started N:4 so must have indeed built up some piety.

This. Ghost moths can be really rough in Spider. I normally do Spider 1-3 and then go to another branch for a bit. Come back when you get sInv or you're just stronger.

Shoals isn't as bad for a caster as it is for a melee focused build. You can take out all the dangerous hexing monsters at range. If you're struggling with ghost moths, A1-3 is certainly easier than N4.

Greater servants are great when used strategically and have a way to disengage. It is when you use them as a panic button that things go sour. They are so strong, you WANT to use them as a panic button.

Great game design IMO.

I quit worrying about spell hunger after posting earlier this morning, and yes, PCloud works wonders for crowd control. I typically carry one ration type and one quick food (for hungry ghosts and if spell hunger gets me too low in the middle of a fight). I inevitably end up picking up other types of food, and when I get back to my stash I dump it all and pick up the largest stack of each type. This is why sometimes I'm eating fruit and sometimes pizza, sometime bread and sometimes meat. So I have a 16 fruits and 9 jerkies at my stash, and the rest of the food in the game is in my inventory. Zero royal jellies have spawned thus far in the game.

Well, YASD. It was mesmerization, and I handled it wrong. At the beginning, it was just me and the avatar by herself. I spawned two demons and then a sea snake approached from the other direction. I put her in a PCloud and then let the demons address her while I Venom Bolted the snake. She mesmerized me during the fight with the snake, during which it got in a good hit on me, and then I realized that one of my demons was gone and the other hurting. In retrospect, this was the avatar's posse showing up, still out of my LOS but in range of my demons. I ought to have begun teleport right then, but for some reason I thought I had to kill the mesmerizer before I could get away. I was breaking the cardinal rule of continuing a fight with too few MP. I didn't start TP until after the avatar died to the Sticky. Alas at least one of the javileneers had silver javelins, and by then I was too far behind the damage curve for healing to keep up until TP kicked in. RMsl had been active going into the fight but got broken sometimes during the last stages when I was trying to heal myself.

I appreciate the interest everyone has had in my character, especially edgefigaro. While I knew I wasn't an expert player I thought I was progressing pretty well, but I clearly have a lot yet to learn about how to build a character and especially how to know what the character needs at given points in the game. As for the mesmerization death, well, I learned from it, and would welcome your tips for the next time I face that attack but for once I'm not busting myself up too much about it.

kill the mesmerizer first, run towards the stairs as soon as it appears (if not at full mp), read ?tele are all viable options.

You had a wand of lightning. Its noise breaks mesmerization. I always bring scrolls of noise to Shoals just for this purpose (usually I never use them but anyway). A scroll of fog can also be used to break LOS and thus end mesmerization (but you didn't have any).

Well I didn't know that about noise! Thank you! Yeah I'm kinda bummed, but I got beat by a mechanic I hadn't encountered very much. Do avatars always have bands? Because when I started this fight, it was just her and I'd crept into Venom Bolt range.

If you see a dangerous merfolk appear, assume it has a band. They do wander alone as well, but better safe than sorry.

In addition to noise, also silence breaks mesmerization. But I try to save scrolls of silence for dangerous spellcasters.

Avatars don't always come in bands, but Shoals is very open area and thus noise travels far and attracts other enemies...

On character building.

This character specific.
Mahkleb is really strong. You can hug him through a large chunk of the game on any character. 14 in invo and you can clear everything before sbranches with little help from the rest of your kit.

You didn't know how strong he was when you started this character. As a result, you didn't know how strong your character was.

Similar, venom mage background. It isn't a bad start. It wrecks orc (otr, you never learned it.) Venom bolt is a good spell!

More generally:
Knowing how powerful your character is for the current zone is the foundation of accurate threat assessment. It is also a pillar of character building.
Another important pillar is "how much XP is in this zone?" Zones are not created equal. Lair has a lot of xp. Orc, D15, sbranches are not comparable in the amount of growth that happens for a character. Vaults is the next area after lair where you will get a major jump in xp.

What does this mean? It means you can get a lvl 6 spell up in lair. You can eat all the xp in lair orc d15 to get a tri school spell up (like this game), but your defenses suffer.

The first major boon of XP is lair, and [most] characters will get some core aspect of their character completed in lair. Where lair has lots of XP, orc has significantly less, but it does have gold. As you get to the end of lair and look towards Orc and D 15, set up for sbranches. In this case, you got the major addition to your kit up (poison cloud) and then want to spend the rest of your XP on honest, defensive stats. You are preparing to make further decisions for where to take your character, where to use vaults XP. You want to be free to branch out in vaults, especially as a caster.

Also generally, gods are really strong. Their power curves vary. Some gods you can lean on heavilly and directly (trog, fedhas, makh, yred) to get you through the game. Others have powerful abilities but aren't directly useful in a similar way (sif muna, vehu, dim, gozag, ash.)
