Going through the backgrounds: [CIP] DrSk, low MR
I find I always end up playing the same old combos. So to mix things up a bit, I'm working my way through all the backgrounds (or until I get bored), playing each with a different species until I get a character to Lair. Results so far:

Latest guy was a troll artificer of trog:
I've never played an artificer before. They seem really strong - the wands make the most difficult part of the game way easier, and evocations 6-10 or whatever doesn't feel like a wasted skill at any stage. Later I segued into the large rocks as my ranged option, and it was mostly plain sailing.
Except Vaults 5! I really need to get a better strategy for melee characters on Vaults 5. Ended up in serious trouble to vault wardens, who I think are the most dangerous enemies in the entire game. My plan of javelins of penetration just didn't bring them down fast enough. Ended up getting swamped, made a lucky uncontrolled teleport with Mark at about 50HP, and surrounded myself with brothers and scroll-summons while the assorted evils of the level (including Mara and Mennas) tried to finish me off. Scary times. Escaped, did elf to level up a bit and regain favour, and then went back and cleared V5 veeeery carefully.
Any tips on clearing Vaults 5 (or picking up any other third rune) safely as this character? That is, a Trog-troll with decent but not great defenses, and strong unarmed and throwing damage. Even thinking back, I can't see how to clear it without serious risk - mostly because a vault warden out of LoS can come in and curse the stairs before you have a chance to get away.

I've never played an artificer before. They seem really strong - the wands make the most difficult part of the game way easier, and evocations 6-10 or whatever doesn't feel like a wasted skill at any stage. Later I segued into the large rocks as my ranged option, and it was mostly plain sailing.
Except Vaults 5! I really need to get a better strategy for melee characters on Vaults 5. Ended up in serious trouble to vault wardens, who I think are the most dangerous enemies in the entire game. My plan of javelins of penetration just didn't bring them down fast enough. Ended up getting swamped, made a lucky uncontrolled teleport with Mark at about 50HP, and surrounded myself with brothers and scroll-summons while the assorted evils of the level (including Mara and Mennas) tried to finish me off. Scary times. Escaped, did elf to level up a bit and regain favour, and then went back and cleared V5 veeeery carefully.
Any tips on clearing Vaults 5 (or picking up any other third rune) safely as this character? That is, a Trog-troll with decent but not great defenses, and strong unarmed and throwing damage. Even thinking back, I can't see how to clear it without serious risk - mostly because a vault warden out of LoS can come in and curse the stairs before you have a chance to get away.
