Get to name the next combo - challenge

I'd like to introduce an idea of slightly different (realtime) combo challenge:
Be the first one to win the current combo, and get to name the next combo! (and lots of fame and glory of course)

Rules:
1. First one to win online the stated combo and post morgue in this thread gets to name the next combo (Species and background)
2. Winner is excluded from the next round (can participate after that normally again)
3. If several wins are posted to thread, winner is the earlier post (despite what was the chronological order of wins, so post fast after winning)
4. No other wins than exactly stated combo are considered
5. Same species & background combo cannot be used twice
6. God can also be specified. If so, changing gods during the game is not allowed
7. Impossible combos are ignored (Mu of Zin, etc)
8. 0.16.1 and newer version only (including trunk)
9. Combo games eligible for win must have been started after the combo was announced
10. Winner can optionally specify required amount of runes for next combo (default = 3, if not specified)
11. Consecutive combos must have different species and background.
12. Winners can specify extra requirements to be met, as long as they're somewhat reasonable (see le_nerds first win below as example).
13. If challenge is not won during exactly a week (168 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds), first poster (winner of previous challenge or anyone) can specify the next combo (which they cannot take part themselves, similar to winner of previous challenge)

Not sure how much take-up you'll get on this if you're insisting on choosing gods as part of the combo; many players would prefer to choose gods depending on what altars they find early in the dungeon.

Fixed god is part of the challenge, i figured otherwise there might be too much Trog.
Also, i suppose sadistic winners might want to state particularly hard combos for others as winner is exluced from the next round anyway... Which is not encouraged officially of course ;)

I was involved in similar running combo challenges on a different board for a couple years. They were very fun for a long time (though everyone involved has since burned out on them). However, some suggestions: I agree that fixing the god probably isn't a good idea. We had no problems at all with too much trog, so I think this concern is unfounded, and also depth of the relevant altar adds a huge random factor which I think most players will want to avoid. Also, I'm not sure I recommend realtime fastest win (or post) as the criteria. The reason is that, for these to be fun, you want a bunch of people to be playing them. But if you go by realtime speed, among regular participants you'll have one person ready to start a new combo (who by these rules can't even participate), and a whole bunch of players somewhere in the middle of a character who will then have to decide what to do with that character. We used high score in weekly increments, and then later biweekly increments as momentum slowed. (It's also easier to setup sequell keywords with fixed time intervals and so on.)

I added to rules that if winner does not specify a god, it's free to choose and your extra specification is also OK and valid.

Well, I'm going to finish my OpWn, since I have 2 runes, etc. Another tip for the SpWz start; it's probably the third easiest Sp start behind En and VM. Mephitic stabbing and CjFlame will kill everything through a rune or two.

Well I learned a lot about them at least. But it's a pretty hard sell... ;) OTOH, I kind of like the Wn start. That was both my first Op and Wn ascension, so... definitely worth doing.

Next: FoAs

I am bad at both formicids and assassins, so I have no good advice, but I guess that digging must make for some nice and entertaining surprise stabs.

3 runes are enough, but please take the abyssal one. In my experience it is often a formidable challenge with formicids, and I would like to see how experienced players do it.

This is a really hard one for me. I keep splatting. I think it's the combination of the sort of unfocused Assassin start with the Formicid lack of panic buttons.

Key to victory might be that the rules don't force you to play by the background (unless previous winner dictates so), so you could play FoAs as fighter / hunter with a free blowgun and needles to soften up enemies before they're in melee range.
Fo probably should start using a shield ASAP when they find one, and heaviest armor RNG has generated on the floor.
And probably something else than short blades. Staves being my new favorite, since if you have found a quarterstaff, weapon acquirement will almost certainly give you a lajatang.

Well yes that's what As background is technically - my hint was to try heavy armour, big weapon and shield instead of short blades, light armour and stabbing (as in stereotypical image of an assassin).

How is this count? 3 mutations from one potion is 3 or 1? What if I have rMut mutation from Xom (I actually have)?

Indeed, does the attempt to mutate count or do we need successful mutations? And suppose there was bad luck with mutagenic monsters/!Mut in Dungeon, can we just get malmutated by shining eyes?

Yes, that's the correct way to play the As background: Enjoy the free blowgun and darts and cloak, then pick up a good weapon and armor from the floor.

Beneficial mutation and helix count. Monster malmutations don't count.

It needs to be verifiable in the character dump, you just need 5/10 total successful voluntary mutations.

Note that you can use contamination if you're desperate, but as far as I know this is more likely to give bad mutations.

Yes, quaff-id is fine, and you can get multiple voluntary mutations from the same source and they will all count towards your 5.

Upon encountering a Chei-altar (which you must actively seek out, eg. trough entering temple and searching it) you must convert to cheibriados, and not leave until you die/win the game. You may worship other gods beforehand.

The UC-condition is as follows: The submitted morgue file must have a simple majority (eg. 50.01%) of all actions from the melee plus cast categories be melee (unarmed.)

So if you fond a dagger of distortion and used it for lair to switch to UC afterwards, that would totally work, since the majority of actions come after lair. And if you were to use IE as background, that would also probably work if you switched to UC at some point in time.

i began as spas for an easy start, and didn't get around to training unarmed until about when i entered lair branches, so i compensated by punching through abyss for my 4th rune. abyss with chei... never again.

next up, i'll treat you all to my favourite combo: feck. may not abandon xom.

I got through most of lair, but lost my last life when freaking xom hasted an 8 headed hydra right next to me.

haha, sorry, that may have been harsh. i was probably quite lucky with the one i won (i think it was my 7th try). let's get rid of the "may not abandon xom" rule and see if that helps?

OK, just had my best character die after going down the stairs in the OM, and then immediately back up after getting hit by a knight and surrounding entourage. So frustrating, and I even had ~10 in fighting, and much more in dodging.

Tip for anyone else still on the hunt for this win:
Instead of training offense first as is the usual advice, train Stealth to 4-5. There are monsters you just can't handle early game. The first few gnoll packs usually, for instance. It really lets you avoid fights and pick your battles in two important ways.
  • You can choose to walk away before they spot you.
  • They will lose track of your location after you run away and walk around 3 corners, letting you disengage.
On top of that, Xom teleport rides change from potentially life threatening to useful with 4-5 stealth because almost nothing will notice you, but you get valuable info.

I have better survival this way at least...

early stealth is definitely a good idea. play as a stabber as much as the game allows you to. :maledictions is a great find, as is :frost, or any form of defensive magic really.

i don't think there's anything you can realistically do to manipulate piety, except that wearing faith makes xom act more often, for better or worse (more good than bad on average, but that doesn't matter if the bad kills you).
