YASDx2: Pollen Golem's Stupid Builds Public Series

Even the good builds are stupid because I choose them for the wrong reasons.

I'll announce my http://crawl.s-z.org sessions, and I welcome and enjoy spectators.

(Webtiles lags by about 0.2 seconds, but it's just about acceptable for a turn-based game.)

This KoHu build is meant to be crossbow-dependent.

Are crossbows weaker than they were a few versions back, or is it just me?

I had a breezy time clearing D:1-8 despite many Uniques, because of good gear finds.
A goblin carried a shield on D:3. I didn't know they could do that!
There's a slimey fire dragon armor on sale for 1300 gold.

I have a +1 vampiric flail, but I'm not sure I need it. I have good defenses and an amulet of regeneration. I like switching to the crossbow as necessary. I haven't trained the 0-apt m&f. And I have good short blades - a +1 short sword of electrocution, and a +2 short sword of speed.

I could use some advice on the best way to go about identifying/purging my inventory.
Current plan is to worship Trog.

Identify: use identify scrolls on the potions, and read-ID the scrolls. This is the standard way. The reasoning is that read-ID-ing scrolls won't hurt you (the worst that can happen is that you waste a blink scroll), but don't quaff-ID potions, because mutation can ruin your character.

Weapons: the elec short sword is a great find. Elec is one of the miraculous brands that make even bad weapons good (and short swords are bad). The speed short sword is pretty trashy.

Skills: don't train throwing.

I'm continuing this character in around 10 hours on the s-z server! That's 5 pm UTC.

I have a backup XL5 KoHu ready to join Oka, in 0.16.

EDIT: it's over, here's the dump. Thank you so much to all the people who came out and watched! I had a lot of help especially with making hard decisions. Cleared dungeon, orc, lair, swamp, and snake. No early god abilities was easy to get over. Berserk was rarely even useful until Swamp. At one point it took out probably 20 ogres at once, well berserk and haste to be precise. Snake wasn't very threatening since I had the right resistances and xbow is really good in snake. I can now have rCorr and rN+++ if I want. Does that mean Vaults or Slime Pits? I can go to Slime with rCorr and rC++ plus a ring of either rC or MR+, is that enough to clear at least one slime floor? P.S. webtiles gradually becomes slower and slower for me, until I start actually seeing the messages come line by line. Saving and resuming makes it go back to lag-free. By the way, does shooting bolts of cold from a crossbow of electrocution make you deal cold damage, and electrocute on top of that?

I plan to continue the last character in a few hours. And the questions from my last post still stand. Seriously, I have no idea where to go next - help!

EDIT: Done. I'm afraid of Vaults:5 and Slime:6 but cleared all the preceding levels, and all of Crypt.
Thinking of doing depths and elf, maybe abyss since a treasure vault wants the abyssal rune.
I found a gateway to the abyss. I also have a quickblade of distortion - and a ton of enchant weapon scrolls!
Thanks for helping me escape the cursed toe!
Meanwhile, can I take on Slime:6 where I am currently? Look - tons of tele scrolls and great ranged.

TRJ is a strange fight. You can do it with the strength you have now. Generally, you can always do the TRJ fight if you can make it to him. Also Slime pits isn't a place you clear. Ain't going to find nothing but more awful worthless corrosive monsters and things that mutate you clearing. Slime pits is a dive. Get to the bottom and leave as much shit as you can on the above floor.

The thing of it is, TRJ is weak to a ton of stuff that is kinda dangerous to use. Immolation is great and he starts in the middle surrounded by smaller jellies so you can get the jump on him and bomb him but it isn't enough to kill him. It also makes a ton of noise.

Now, another thing that is really good on a char with rN like yours is torment. I don't know if you have torment scrolls, but again, you are playing with nasty magic. Torment will get him down to half but you will also torment yourself.

Also, you have a stone of tremors (which should be used to blow up your first immolation charge), a fan, trog and a sack for summons and. Why do you have two fans?

Use all your tricks for the TRJ fight, he is monstrously powerful if he gets to you. He is ultimately a really fun fight that is nearly always doable because all you really need is a couple common wands/evokables, a couple scrolls and some god abilites. However, the whole fucking zone is super dangerous with a super dangerous boss that you have some fucked up strats like "i'm going to nuke myself with torment against this super dangerous boss who hits like a train and spits out armies-- and this is a good plan."

The nature of the TRJ fight has a very unique space in crawl, and is my favorite fight in the game. But it is really dangerous, and will kill you multiple times as you get a feel for it.

However,

If you have never won the game before, do depths now. You cleared through vaults 4. Do depths. Then do vaults 5 or abyss if you know how to abyss.

OK, I will leave the royal jelly for a while, then when I come back I will:
1. haste
2. come within 6 tiles of the royal jelly
3. read !immolation
4. read !torment (I stashed these scrolls)
5. blow it all up with stone of tremors
6. read !teleportation
7. pelt the royal jelly with bolts of
a) penetration, or
b) silver (it's vulnerable to silver, but eats the bolts?)

I have this useless scroll of brand weapon, since it could not possibly give me better weapons than I already have.
I guess the only non-artifact weapon worth glancing at is a double sword, in case it is of holy wrath.

I did not know that fans deplete simultaneously.
I don't know how "abyssing" is done. I assume I should make a +9 quickblade of distortion and wander around on A:3, staying out of trouble if possible, until I get a vault, and raid it. That would effectively disable my ranged abilities, but I'd be able to get rid of enemies quickly via distortion effects.

Well, a stealthy but weak character can sneak down all the way to the TRJ. I don't think getting to TRJ is any guarantee on that you can kill it.

Dangerous, yes, but there's no need to die if you are prepared.

Personally I've never used torment against TRJ. Also, I would fight TRJ in one of the central corridors and not teleport away. I would also summon some brothers in arms to help.

Like sprucey says, teleing is not a great part of that plan. I'd roll evokeables (rods, wand of draining/fire/similar) over bolts. You want TRJ to come to you through the fire from immolation towards your army of summons in a vault corridor. Tele away and you lose control of the fight.

You prolly do want to tele away (or just run/other escape) if you actually have lost control of the fight.

Abyss, otoh, is all about teleing early and often. Wearing a cursed ring of teleportation and an amulet of regen, just evoke your ring at first enemy you see and wander away. Repeat until you find a couple paths down and the rune vault and remember to take the tele ring off when you find the vault.

Abyssing has nothing to do with distortion weapons and everything to do with if you feel comfortable travelling through the abyss for an indefinite period of time. When I first started crawl I died nearly every time I got banished and I was terrified of the place.

Both the abyssal and slimy runes have a much lower threshold of "your character must be this strong to do this zone" than vaults, esp vaults 5. However, the threshold is only really lower if you know what you are doing, less so while you are learning. Vaults 5 is way more straight forward. There are going to be a whole bunch of endgame nasties coming at you in v5. Kill em. Kill em all.

Torment + immolation is my favourite way to kill TRJ. Needs some care though.
Distortion is good in the abyss. You can still banish or kill relatively unthreatening monsters, since it is sometimes easier to kill them than tele-ing from them.

As far as I know, it doesn't. The last time I checked, Nessos was the only being in the dungeon that could combine ammunition and a weapon brand.

Supposedly a vorpal or speed brand on the launcher will stack with the ammunition, otherwise ammo brands are used by preference. Edge-case where one is fire the other frost where you get no brand.

Definitely do depths before doing Vault:5 or Slime:6. I don't like KoHu with crossbows because of the -20% hp and how tough it is to use crossbows in the early game (ammo problems). You now have roughly 300 bolts, which isn't terribly high, but you're at least able to use your crossbow when you want to. Your crossbow is incredible, by the way, elec is a very good brand. It'd be nice to be higher than +5 enchanted, but don't let that get you down. Isn't min delay on triple crossbows 26 skill? You should pick up those last two levels when you can, imho.

With no item weight anymore, there's no reason to ever drop ammo - base ammo, at least. If you don't have 6 slots for various brands you could drop some branded ammo.

Rod of ignition you probably want. You were making good use of your lightning rod while I watched and Ignition is quite possibly the best rod. (it fires basically a bolt of fire that creates fireball AoEs each time it hits something.)

Note that while Immolation is fun on V:5, it does wake up a whole boatload of dudes you might rather have left sleeping. Blinking (or teleporting) past the welcoming party and luring them around the edge is, I think, usually a safer strategy.

I quite like the combination to be honest. You come down the stairs and let off some fireworks. Bang, whizz, welcoming party up in smoke. All the heavy-hitters nearby beeline the stair.

THEN you tele out/blink and bail and life is simpler, because most of the nasty is now heading where you just were. If I dont have cTele then I prefer this way, as theres a somewhat reduced chance of me landing on a pile of doom.

Noise, the double-edged sword.

Actually man-moding it... holding the stair until nothing is in LOS, is quite risky yeah. Its still epic though.

Special thanks go out to Berder who helped save this character. It turns out that the restoring of rotted HP has been changed: now, the healing aspect of Heal Wounds is redirected towards healing rot, whatever your current HP/maxHP is. I imagined there might be some kind of difference between zapping and quaffing. Had I understood this, I would have depleted the wand so I'd have more potions and an empty wand to leave behind in my stash.

What I'm thinking to do:

1) quaff both beneficial mutations
2) draw all cards from the legendary "changes" deck
3) enchant wielded evasion triple crossbow to +9
4) go to cocytus, tartarus, dis, use the crossbow

I could keep rebranding the +5 quickblade until I get elec, but it doesn't seem to matter at this point.
I kinda wanted to go with a shield and eudemon/quickblade/rod combination, maybe the randart hand crossbow too, bringing just the penetration ammo. But, triple crossbow seems just more powerful. Oh well, maybe for Pan.
I entered a treasure trove and all it had was scrolls and manuals.
I could apply 9 scrolls of enchant armor to a gold/shadow dragon hide, but the +9 chain mail with regen seems better anyway.

If regeneration is really the problem, use trog's hand more freely. It's roughly the same as three regen+ artefacts, if I recall and that hasn't changed lately. If that isn't enough, something is probably going wrong tactically.

Quickblade and no slaying look hard...
It reminded me recent thread "let's make Hell 1-6 harder, it's too easy after clearing a Zig with Fire Storm, Glaciate and Necromutation" ;)

Edit. I usually use a Long Blade in extended with Ko/Ha, you even have some 14 skill levels there.

Yeah, antimagic quickblade is undesirable, especially with spirit shield and 50+ MP.
OK, got the bony rune quite smoothly. Ereshkigal used healing but not silence.
Digging is absolutely necessary for the other vaults in tartarus:7.

Do Pan Lords always know your location? I teleported earlier, and the Pan Lord found me after a few turns, but nobody else did.

So I saw this Pan Lord approaching me and read teleportation. In the few turns before it kicked in, I took half its health and saw that it was an easy fight. In retrospect, I should have zapped myself with a tele wand to cancel the teleport. But I didn't, and teleported several tiles away, where I am now ^, in view of six Hellions while I'm at 53 HP. Normally I would read a scroll of blinking/fog/holyword, but I was recently mutated to have Blurry Vision, again. Also, I am frozen - encased in ice - from the mighty blast of ice the Pan Lord conjured. The options I see for my next turn are:
1)draw the Elixir card and kick ass
2)move NE, hope black smoke obscures LOS
3)quaff heal wounds
4)wield Lantern of Shadows
5)draw the Placid Magic card - I don't know if this will prevent the hellions from using hellfire on me
6)evoke the disc of storms (at evo 27) - maybe rain clouds will form above lava and make tons of smoke

P.S. bug alert: In the fight with Dispater, he zapped himself with teleport so much that eventually the description said he was "carrying a wand, empty". Even after this, he managed to zap himself, start looking strangely unstable, and eventually disappear. After dying he left a single empty wand of teleportation. Somebody might want to look into this, see if it's reproducible.

EDIT: I guess this bug was fixed in early May: "Monsters can no longer zap empty wands & leave them with negative charges."

Oh, and I now have hard proof that ammo brands stack with launcher brands:

Sorry, I don't see how you can be safe if those Hellions cast Hellfire and/or Pan lord casts Glaciate again. Entering Pan with blurry vision was a mistake IMHO

Edit. Peak depends on server and I believe it is usually evening in corresponding time zone.

I got Blurry Vision literally on this level, a hundred turns ago (by that pierced/frozen cacodemon)

s-z is Eastern Time, so like 6pm to 12am there?

I think this is unique to penetration. Certainly there are luancher/ammo brand combos that do not stack.

Ok, then entering Pan as spell-less character (thus no CBlink) without rMut and enough potions of cure mutation was a mistake. It is possible to land right into that Hellion Island when entering a new Pan level so every character should have a plan for such situation. If the plan is missing or is not perfect, there is a player mistake.

Yes, there are many games on s-z during 6PM-11PM Eastern Time.

PS. Did the character survive?

Edit. Velocity/speed/penetration launchers stack with ammo, flaming/freezing/electro/holy ones don't.

The character hasn't budged. Oh, and it was a freezing launcher that stacked with penetration ammo.
Will it still be possible to land into that Hellion Island after getting the demonic rune and leaving the level?

Not sure about multiple hellion islands, but think you can't get more then one;
once I got demonic rune on some random floor, and few floors after I dropped near hellion island, so I just skipped it

Regardless of whether you can see Hellion Island more than once (I think you can't) you can skip it and get the demonic rune somewhere else.

Yes, if you already have demonic rune, the Hellion Island will not contain the rune but nothing prevents the island from being generated. As far as I remember I got some useful item instead of rune there.

For getting out of your current situation: The elixir card is a full heal over a few turns? I'm not terribly familiar with all of the cards. It's a legendary deck, and you have 27 evocations. This seems like it's probably your best first turn. You will only get 20-30 hp a turn from it I think, I'm not sure exactly how much. Still, it should hopefully be enough to survive the hellfires - they may walk, not cast through each other, etc. Of course if they all roll the smite targeted hellfire, there's nothing you can do. Assuming their damage output is low enough, the question then becomes:

1) walk a step away/hope for smoke and diminished LOS of hellion island
2) Quaff heal wounds to further help elixir heal you
3) read the blinking scroll, wait a turn for it to kick in, and escape

The problem I have with #1 is that you're far, far too close to hellion island. If you could see say 3-4 tiles of the island, taking a step away would remove a lot of that potential damage. But you're seeing 3-4 rows in, which is quite far. In some good news, if you miraculously had two turns, you could go north east, then north, and that wall would help block most of the island from view. But that seems like a stretch.

So, after taking elixir, watch you hp closely. Looks like you're currently at around 35/180, give or take. After elixir, if:

A) your hp goes up decently, say 50+ range - try plan 3 or plan 2
B) hp stays mostly the same - try plan 2
C) Hp goes down - try plan 1. Note that plan 1 is not terribly likely to save you and this is a desperation move. You're mostly hoping for smoke to prevent further hellfires.

Even in case A, I might be tempted to take a heal wounds before reading blinking. I guess it comes to how strong elixir is, which I don't know. I'm basing this advice on the assumption it's strong enough to actually help you in this case. I don't think your other options are all that much better.

Like all medical advice, you should probably get a second opinion before acting :)

After drawing the elixir, I got hellfired once and went from 53 HP to 56 HP. I'm not frozen anymore either, so moving NE is likely the best next move. Quaffing heal wounds is probably counterproductive because I'm rotted by 12 HP (how? what in Pan can rot living characters?) so the first HW won't help me much - it will redirect the restoring of HP into reversing rot. Elixir seems to ignore rot and heal you right through it, because I haven't had any rot restored by Elixir this turn.

If that is the demonic rune blink away, heal, and changed levels. the demonic rune will spawn later if you don't pick it up. If not, link away and lure the Hellions into 1v1. You don't need blinking if you can break LOS with all but one of them in a single step, but I don't see how that is possible. Don't F*** around with hellfire, I lost a character with 14 runes to it.

If you land directly on Hellion Island, you can just kill them all. Kill the pan lord last.

At least, I think this still work.
