First time to get three runes

After a tough beginning, and a dire lack of remove cuse scrolls/heal potions I have got my first three runes!

Very nice. I did write you a long reply in the other thread with advice but quick-reply ate it. My best DsEn of Ashenzari died on vaults 5 after a miscast haste slowed him at XL22 so you've already surpassed that. I then started running Deep Elves instead after a followup character got 1-shotted from max HP by a holy branded weapon.

Generally with Ashenzari enchanters I go with conjurations as my second school rather than necromancy, the idea being that if you can't hex it, it can see invis, and dazzling spray is impractical, you can try blowing it up. Bolt spells are also a good way to hit high priority targets you don't have a line of fire to, like summoners and things that use smite and hellfire. Later on when stabbing becomes less relevant you'll want to switch from short to long blades, the crosstraining makes it an easy transition and the increase in damage is huge. With all that necromancy skill I'd recommend picking up some spells (death channel is a good one, dispel undead is very useful especially for Ds who can't use holy weapons) or even reskilling - pain brands also become less relevant when an increasing number of your enemies become immune to negative energy.

Also, Moon Troll + magic shroud = awesome. Placid magic 3 on an enchanter though, yikes, you'll want to find a cure mut as soon as possible.

Don't reskill out of the skill that lets you tab orb guardians (and cast many useful spells, such as Dispel Undead, Agony, Regeneration, Borgnjor's/Death's Door).

Incidentally, how did you get the necromancy skill? You haven't cast any necro spells or used reskilling.

If you want another killing method (for winning now you don't need it, for extended it would be convenient) I'd use long blades and summoning.

I memorized pain and then built up necro but never used the spell. Then as I found the Necronomicon book I stopped Necro for a while and built up other things.Then when I memorized Lich Form and Haunt I started building that up as well as Summons. I won't switch to Long Blade until I find a weapon that is very good. I just got the Slime Rune and the Abys rune. I guess I will try to keep stabbing but also use Lich form to spam summons when that works better. I need to boost my spellcasting but Necro, and Trans are now ok for casting Lich form. I still use invisibility a lot but can take some of Hexes and put into Summons or something. I do want to keep Haste and Invisibility at ok levels. No need for very high levels as I caste it before I go into situations. I think it is still useful because it often lets me one tab kill some monsters even if many have see invisiblity when I am mobbed. But maybe in Zig, Hell, Pand it is not as useful. Haven't been there yet so I don't know. My hexes went up very high because I found a training manual so I can take from there and give other place.

My DemonSpawn mutations are all quite nice. It is always useful to be uncannily stealthy. And having Troll armour and Mana Regenration with very high stealth is very useful. Many times I have been able to duck out and quickly recover. Black Mark is ok. The negative resis is useful. Anyhow I will now go back to Tombs. I had a hard time on the second level and will try again.

But for all that, I like this Character very much. But for the first half of the game I was desperate to find Remove Curse Scrolls. Now I am desperate to find cure mutations potions. :(

I found that cure mutations were very common in ziggurats, if you don't mind entering the one in the depths knowing you won't clear it.

You can only go into each Ziggurat once, but if you keep visiting Pandemonium floors more will generate.

You can visit as many ziggurats as you want and they aren't hard to find in pan. Never do another floor in a ziggurat just because you're worried about finding another.

This time I managed to finish it. (Down to one hp and no mana at the very last one but still survived.) I am sure the xp earned helps anyone but for Ash characters it made a huge difference. Any manual is of use because I can just put that exp into something else and at higher levels xp potions are not that dramatic but they do help. Now I find Hell pretty easy.

From what I read, if I go to a zig after completing one all zigs will be more difficult. In that case would it not be better to stop at level 26? Or should a character be strong enough to take on stronger mobs. It was difficult in the beginning as stealthy stabbers are not the best for facing mobs. But Invisibility/haste/stab did work on some levels so I can't complain too much. Oddly enough I didn't realize I went in without any fire resistance gear. Only noticed that at level 26 by which time it was too late to grab gear for the final level. Luckily didn't need it. But i have very high ev and shields so that helps as well as three sources of regeneration of hp and one of mana. Every little bit helps.

having cleared a zig the same game you got 3 runes for the first time is very impressive, well done.

Thank you. Some was due to what I learned here, some was to Ash for help in building up a strong character, and a lot of luck. I did find shadow creatures to be very important here. Let me figure out how to prepare for the fight. Even being uncannily stealthy was not much use in drawing out a few monsters at a time. I caste shadow to see what type of monsters were around set up any needed items. got closer caste my summons. Edged past them and used wands. Then ran back to little hole caste more summons or used special items, bags of snakes, tremor, etc buffed up, and hoped for the best. Also, when surrounded it is good to leave weak monsters alive if possible. Just tabbing is not a good strategy. Many times I could have one or two weak monsters next to me and focus on the strong ones. But either way Zig is not easy for a stabber but a great way to become much stronger especially with Ash.

8 Runes and 7 to go. So far hell has been easy. Did Iron and the Undead one first. Just dived down buffed and killed the boss. Cold should be ok but will be more careful. Must go back to lair to get my dragon armour for fire resistance. Actually, my stats are healing in Hell. I was pretty wiped out after Zig. (But cleared up my mutations! :D )

Fire resistance is nice, but it won't help as much as you might think in Gehenna, as it does nothing for hellfire.

Thanks for the heads up. I had an easy time with the other three Hell sections but better prepare for hellfire. I will wear my regen ring which also has + to str and dex. Would it be better to go with Troll armour which would keep my EV over 45 and three levels of regeneration or one level of regeneration, higher AC and F+++ with the mottled dragon armour? `I better think this one out. `I see that invisibility will be of some use on this level and better use my sneaking as much as I can. Or maybe even go to Pan for a while and see if I can find a way to have at least two levels of fire resistance as well as regeneration. I was a little worn out after zig and my stats have not gotten back so it might be a good idea to just explore for a while, get my stats up to 100% and build up fighting so my HP are higher. Also, winning this one will bring me up to ten runes and don't want to die before I get all fifteen runes.

Can't you just quaff a restore abilities? I usually have far more of those than I need.

Also I'd go with MTLA over MDA, regen is nice everywhere, more so in hell. rF+++ will definitely help in Gehenna, but I think the MDA is only sticky flame resistance?

Usually I have far more than I need. This game I haven't. I have played this game better than all others. (Obviously as I now have 9 runes.) But until the bottom of orcs I was desperate for remove curse scrolls, after that desperate for cure mutation. Now I am searching for food and restore abilities. I look for these things before I even check armor, weapons, and jewelery.

Survived all of Hell. Now five more runes to finish! First I need to find a few restore abilities potions so will be scrumming in Pan for a while. try to get my fighting and spellcasting up to higher levels. (Although I only train one at a time. Rest goes into spell skills or whatever..)

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
