How to present a dungeon crawl let's play video?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

How to present a dungeon crawl let's play video?

So I went ahead and recorded myself playing a NaMo^Chei, up to the point where I've finished lair. There's no sound on the video, and the total running time is 1 hour, 19 minutes. I could play it back at x2 speed, x4 speed, or play some back at normal speed, and speed some other parts up, etc, to cut down the running time. I could record audio commentary, or provide commentary either in a large description/text file, or as annotations over the video, if I bother to figure out how to do that.

What do you thikn is the best way to present something like this? If I did record audio and keep changing the playback speed to x2/x4 boring parts, it would probably show the quicktime UI over my video, which I wouldn't be too thrilled about.

My vote: audio commentary and normal speed.

In the commentary I'd focus on Naga combat tactics, and Chei abilities (when you use them).

I guess you know that Chei would punish you for that?

Make sure you edit out all the boring bits, to the point where it's just a video of guttural screaming. Add yellow text for emphasis.

I would present it as screenshots with text. There is so much downtime in crawl that you don't need to, and almost certainly don't want to, explain why you moved two spaces left when that hob goblin skeleton came into sight (times one million).

Well most let's players record the commentary while playing and if they aren't explaining something about the game because the part is boring they fill it out with talking about whatever comes to their mind that may or may not be vaguely related to the game.

In your case however, I'd edit out the boring parts and play the rest in normal speed and then you imagine you're a sports commentator.

Coincidentally, most let's players are bad.

yeah, they're not bad at all. watched some of the kobold assassin one though, and it bothered me that he's got a quick blade and 25 stealth skill, and still won't memorize EH from the spellbook he's carrying around ;)

So, when and where are we going to see your video? I'd love to see it. I have massive trouble getting a naga started.

Re: How to present a dungeon crawl let's play video?

Honestly?

I dislike Crawl in lets play form, there is so much to read and look at and even commentary is not that good to get an idea of what is going on.

And besides, its not that entertaining when you are not playing, unlike, say, FPS. In DCSS much of the gameplay is boring to look at except when bad stuff happens.

I much prefer the "blog post" format. You post screenshots of important events and threatening situations and comment on them, players get as long as they want to look at them (inventory for instance) without being bothered by video compression. A lot more condensed and interesting, less of a time investment for followers and probably less work for you too.

GIF's (as in, a sequence of a few screenshots rather than video) are probably a great fit for this format too

Re: How to present a dungeon crawl let's play video?

I've recorded the audio tonight so hopefully I can figure out the youtubez and set up an account there (I don't have it cellphone verified so it wouldn't let me upload long videos currently). Hopefully in a hour or two after this post, part 1 will be up.

I can certainly sympathize with people who want a text/screenshot summary, a full play through is very, very long...Maybe I'll try both, but for now, it's going to to video + audio and normal speed for part one.

I should also probably figure out how to reduce the file size of the recording - the default in quicktime captures your screen at 60fps...Once I added the audio, the file is 3GB. I don't think DCSS really needs 60fps...You could probably do 15 fps and no one would even notice ;) Ah well. At least 30 fps for the next one...

It should be up at http://youtu.be/nfeaZqzf4kg once it's done processing. I'll check it tomorrow and maybe I'll make a new thread for it + follow up episodes, but in the unlikely case you just can't wait to see it now, try that link in a little while.

You should try out the Open Broadcaster Software. It has a local recording feature which produces an mp4 output with a fairly small file size. I am looking forward to watch your videos! ;)

This is something I had wanted to do but ended up not knowing where's a good place to find an hour + of simple background music that was both good and not overpowering. I had one suggestion for Olafur Arnalds type music, which would probably be my best bet, I'd take other suggestions if you want. I figure if there's nothing there you could always put on your own background music ;)
