CiP DsBe monstrous advice?

Hello there all, I've had a really awesome run on a Ds that was lucky enough to be a monstrous berserker. I've never had a Ds with monstrous potential actually live long enough for the full transformation to be a possibility, and I feel I owe it to cautious play, extremely liberal usage of Trog's Hand, and an artefact ring of regen and slaying +5 found on D6 :p

cleared most of lair, except for branches (didn't get rpois until cleared orc, have 2 choices for it now) orc completely, dipped my toe into elf 3 a bit, found a wizlab! my first one ever! Never even so much as seen one before, and i've been playing crawl since before the removal of mountain dwarves! got some shittacular mutations from fog, but found a super sweet anti mut amulet, and a whole stack of cure mut and mut and benemut. I'm assuming those are guaranteed from the theme of the lab?

Anyways on to the meat of the questions! I've got a lovely antimagic demon whip, and am trying to decide between enchanting this one up, or holding out for a Dwhip of elec, what are y'all thoughts? if I go monstrous, I turn giant sized and can use the infamous giant spiked clubs, right? I am also curious as to what opinions might be of my skilling, and what I should really be aiming for. I know 20 is min delay for great maces, and trog has given me a few, but demon whip with +11 damage from slaying bonuses seems legit. I've got several enchant armors, and like 6 EW2s, and have also found a treasure trove asking for a +4 GDA, am considering trading one i find eventually (you pretty much are guaranteed to find some late game, right?)

My plate armor was a recent find, before that I was rocking a +6 chain of rElec, and also have a +1 of rPois to use for snake / swamp.

I got a whole stack of cure mut and other mutations potions, and I feel pretty damned awesome for ending up with what I got. Based rng! (it helps to have 5 cure mutations as backups!)

I also ended up banished literally twice in a row by the same weapon, which was incredibly wtf. Rupert apparently can have a great mace of distortion, who knew? He banished me, I found my way back, killed him, fought a bunch of elves in the same room and a De conjurer picked up Rupert's greatmace and banished me with it! blew my mind, I thought there was some sort of hundred turn or so resistance to being banished after getting back. apparently not! (edit, in hindsight it was 160 turns between escaping abyss and being banished again, my bad)

Monstrous Ds can't use GSCs. I would likely enchant AM whip, AM is very good.

Also holy shit, 11 slaying and all those aux attacks. Sweet!

(Also you probably don't wanna wear a +1 plate even if it has rPois.)

Yeah the slaying is a bit nuts for sure!

I've started working my way through Spider since I posted, couldn't help myself. found my first ew3, used it on whip, good times. Tried exploring spider with plate, and it was pretty harsh, redbacks are nasty with lots of poison. switched to a +2 chain of rPois, and it's a much easier time. Might have to go back to that +9 plate for the final floor though, iirc emperor scorpions are big huge slabs of hp and damage. Blowgun deals with orb weavers incredibly well too, it's honestly been one of the early game mpv's of the run! well worth dropping the pair of EWs into it early game I feel.

any suggestions for skilling / overall goals of the character? my dex is pretty high so I figured dodging would be viable to train up, but how much /when I have no clue. i know heavy armor makes unarmed attacks slow as molasses, does it affect the aux attacks too? also, am I completely wrong on the monstrous demonspawn turning pan lord sized at high level? I seem to recall reading that at some point, but if all I get is the stacks of aux attacks I will be slightly saddened.

*edit* I have since realised that with antennae talons and claws, I don't actually get any aux attacks with wearing boots and a buckler. >_< I'm not sure if taking off a buckler is worth the extra potential offense, although since there have been no branded boots this game, I suppose the -1 hit to ac might be worth the extra attacks.

Blowguns are amazing but they have pretty good accuracy even when unenchanted and used at zero skill. They completely demolish orb spiders, yeah.
With your stats, I'd say you'd see a steady increase at EV starting with around 10 Dodging.
Aux attacks have a chance to proc every time you attack in melee, so if you're using a whip even the heaviest armor won't slow them down.Also, all your auxes will eventually get to level 3, at which point you won't be able to wear boots, gloves etc. No giant size, though!

Edit: overall goals - you have endgame quality weapon and generally good offense. Trog means no magic, so this narrows it down to getting more HP/AC/EV and maybe dipping a bit in Evocations if you have rods and phials/lamps/sacks. Some people like to get a ranged skill on Be, I usually don't bother.

I like evocables on a Troglodyte. They make life without casting much easier and you can get an almost guaranteed Rod from acquiring a staff. I think the gain from training just a single skill is very much worth it if you find even one decent rod (ie. not striking). Rod of Clouds and Lightningrod are both very powerfull and give a melee brutes easy access to conjurations equivalent. Also the elemental evocables have saved my life so many times that I tend to always train evocations on Troglodytes and heavy armor users.

Heya, I've since cleared both swamp and spider no problemo, had some hairy moments involving the final floor of swamp and whole piles of dragons. (guess I should've went in with resist poison, figured the clarity would stave off the worst of it, but the poison clouds almost killed me three times, even with trog's hand running!)

nothing new to add to my equipment, I've found the evocations is super great, and the sack of spider and fan of gales have saved my arse a time or two. I've got a rod of destruction that fires bolt spells, but I find I rarely use it. I'm not sure if that's me being dumb, or if javelins of returning / penetration are that good.

also, thanks for clarifying how the aux attacks worked. Shame that monstrous demonspawn don't get huge eventually, I seemed to recall that. must've been an old idea that never actually got implemented.

Hi there, I have a couple more questions, if y'all don't mind answering. What do you think is the relative value of a treasure trove? I'm about to go to zot with 3 runes(I'd have 4 but no dig in the entire damn game!) but I'm burning to know what is in this trove. I just cleared elf, found a +9 GDA of Sinv. compared to my current artefact plate which puts me at AC32 and EV 27. the GDA gives me AC36 to EV19. I can train up armor some more in zot, which would likely be helpful in gaining more EV, and the armour is a nice set of resist to cold which I don't have in my standard gear (got a ring of Rc and Rn in stash, was great for clearing out crypt!) one thing of note is that while I punk'd the Royal Jelly and everything else in slime, I was careless and tabbed twice too many times which let me get malmuted by purple eye. I regret that bitterly, as curing the teleportitis cost me my only 2 cure muts, and I lost 2 str, fire resist, and spit strong poison. I feel I got off lucky keeping clarity though for sure! I have yet to find a single goddamn wand of dig though in this entire game, and I've cleared everything except for Zot and extended stuff. Blows my mind honestly. I can't get the royal jelly loot vault damnit, or his rune. i tried to mash random blink, but it appears those walls are unblinkable through. Would a stone of tremors bust down those treasure vault walls? I've got 2 in stash, and i think a 3rd was on elf.

I feel fairly confident this character could honestly just murder his way through Zot brutally, but I'm curious as to the potential of this character to do extended game stuff. Never had a full 15 runer, but this guy is so absurdly murderous that he might just make it. He has yet to run into Mennas though, for which I am VERYgrateful. I did however barely survive a Vault warden with the sword of Jihad, which was a close call, since I didn't peg him as the threat since there were 3 of em.

thoughts on troving the GDA? I'm curious as to what y'all think of this character's chances at Extended. I've got a lot of random stuff ni stash, including at least 2 of every major evocable. Only rod thus far is rod of blasting for random bolts, but i think pene and returning javelins have been a good ranged offense so far. less weapon swapping mostly -_-;

Note that you can get through the wall with disintigration, and wands of random effect sometimes shoot disintigration as well (You can also use iOOD to blow up walls, but that's a no-go for you)

Also stone of tremors evocables will sometimes destroy rock walls.

As far as the GDA goes, it's probably not really worth it, but swap it out and see what your AC/EV/Resists look like and decide for yourself, it's probably an even coin toss either way.

It seems like your STR is way too low to wear GDA effectively, the moderate AC boost + resists is probably not worth the huge EV hit.

I'd think this is a decent character for extended, all that slaying, with all those aux attacks and the antimagic whip means your offense should be ridiculous, and your defenses are pretty good in that plate armor, although honestly you'd probably be better off with a RC or RN plate, if one exists in your game, and you have the EA scrolls to enchant it up.

It sounds like your ranged offense is mediocre, but again, with all that slaying throwing damage should be decent.

I'd say clear out zot, and after that decide if you still want to do extended.

Oh, and for the love of god, drop some items until you're not burdened anymore.

Hey there, thank you for the advice, I ended up troving the GDA, ended up with mostly junk. Artefact large shield was potentially interesting, but I'm not too interested in getting my Sh to 25. Gah. @Damiac thank you for advice, although I have an artefact ring of rN, rC which is groovy. Also, I wasn't going around burdened all the time, just at the moment weighing my options at the Trove.

Vaults 5 was honestly a joke. with rF+++ I read two scrolls of immolate and murdered the entire entry party and everything else that showed up. Couple slightly close calls involving titans + a pack of sphinxes + a fire giant with a battleax of freezing (WAT?) but came through with judicious use of consumables and retreating.

Thank you for telling me about the Stone working in the royal vault! Never had a character with more than 4 runes before, and this berserker is pretty sweet. Even if I can't use much armor, It's the farthest I've ever gotten in an extended kind of game (won like 4 3runers of various types, first time i went to hell with a character that cleared zot, I got rekt)
