MiBe going for first rune

Hi guys, I just started playing this game a couple of weeks ago and I got a pretty solid MiBe now. I already cleared the Lair, Orcs and the main dungeon (until the depths entrance) and was thinking of grabbing my first rune. From what I've read Swamps is the easier but, unfortunately, I got Snakes so I'm trying to work my way down there, but I'm having a really hard time past level 4. I could go for Shoals but I've read that you need levitation for that one and I haven't found any levitation boots or rings. Any advice you can give me? I could also use some help in regards to the weapons I'm using.

Heres the char dump:

Re: First rune

Well, for starters I'd be using be using the vampiric battleaxe. It's at mindelay, and you're likely to make back whatever damage you'd receive with a couple swings.

Personally, I like getting my Fighting to at least 15 before training Dodging on heavy armour characters, considering you're going to need 10-15 levels in Dodging before you start seeing any increase in EV.

I'd also id that wand. Might be something useful.

As for needing Flight for Shoals, you don't absolutely NEED it, but it makes navigating it easier as you can effectively ignore the tide changes while avoiding fumble penalties versus merfolk. Usually, I just rush to Shoals:5, snag the rune, and run out; it tends to be too annoying to clear with heavy armour characters I play.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

I would personnaly use this :
  Code:
a +1,+3 vampiric battleaxe

But if you use the exec one, which is fine too, raise Axes to 26, you're not far of it, it will be easy

Put extra stat points in Dex, raise Dodging and Fighting, some Evo can always be useful.

I wouldn't bother with Bows, but that's not crazy to train some

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Yeah I was thinking of using the Vampiric axe but I figured that the extra dmge from the exec axe was better. I wasn't planning on leveling up bows, until I got that one from Trog. But maybe I'll just use it for the blink and raise evo. So do you think I could go for Shoals even without levitation or should I just keep going for the Snake Pit rune?

Re: MiBe going for first rune

This sounds like a good time for branch-hopping. Dip your toes carefully into Shoals, being mindful that the terrain changes with the tides and many enemies move much faster than you when they're in the water and have nasty ranged attacks or status effects. If things get tough, go back to Snake:5 and take out a few more nagas; if that gets tough again, go back to Shoals.

It may also be worth doing some quick searches (ctrl-f) to see if you've maybe missed an un-ID'd ring/potion in a shop or elsewhere that could turn out to be flight.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Ok, so apparently I had seen a couple of rings of flight, they were both on a store on D:9 and the reason I didn't find them before was that, for some reason, I thought they were called levitation rings (damn you Nethack!). I cleared the first 4 floors of the Shoals easily but, right as I got down to the fifth I found some unique that hit me for like 30% of my hp, so I decided that was enough for now.
I went back to the Snake Pits and actually didn't have that much trouble this time and managed to get the rune! I was feeling kinda lucky so decided to give the elven halls a try. The first 2 floors? Not a problem. But the third one? oh my god. 30 seconds after going down there I got cast into the Abyss, but I found the portal pretty quickly so I guess that wasn't a big deal. And right after I got back, I got surrounded by those damn elves. After 2 scrolls of teleportation, a scroll of recharging (for my wand of teleportation), like 5 potions of healing and curing, and a potion of haste, I managed to get out. I guess I won't be going there for a while lol.
I was thinking of giving the Vaults a try, but I've read that vaults:5 is pretty nasty. What do you guys think?

Welcome to Abyssal Airlines. Please enjoy your flight.

The last levels of the branches are usually much harder than the first ones, this includes E:3 and V:5.

Is your magic resistance still only at MR+? That's a guarantee to be sent to the abyss more often which might be deadly. The ability Trog's hand grants MR but the question is how often you can use it without losing (too?) much piety. But of course using this ability is better than being banished.

Also, the difficulty of V:5 has increased a lot recently. The silver rune is no longer the default 3rd rune (as it was for many years). Look at the topic What 3rd rune is easiest for most characters to get? if you like.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Yeah my mr is still the same. I got a elec battleaxe from Trog that also grant Mr+ and Rf+, but the vampiric brand has been working great so I'll keep using that one. Guess for now I'll take a look at the first 4 floors of Vaults, I've read that the loot isn't that great until Vault:5 but at least I'll get some exp. Then I'll try and grab the Shoals rune.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

On the contrary, I think doing vaults is a great idea. Lots of dudes in there with heavy armor and big axes, so you might get decent gear. Also dragons, if you want to go that route for armor. Use Trog's Hand to avoid getting marked by sentinels, but always know where a close chokepoint is in relation to yourself, because you won't make it through the whole think without the convokers/sentinels drawing in help. Kill wardens first when safe to do so to keep lines of retreat clear.

vampiric axe is boss. You might even try a brand weapon scroll on that exec axe to see if you luck into a vamp ex axe.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

In the end I decided to clear vaults 1-4 and then get the Shoals rune, and I did it! yay for me! While on the Shoals I found an artifact plate armour and thought that I could finally get some good defense, but it turned out to be a -8 armour with +2 str, so that sucked lol.
Now I'm really lost about what to do next. I've read some terrible things about the Slimes Pits and Vaults:5 (Those are the "easier" runes right?). There is a shop on D:9 that sells a ring with corrotion protection so I could get that for slimes but I really think I need to get some better armour, I just can't find any.

You have plate armor, what more do you want? You can easily win with the armor you have. I wouldn't do Slime without rCorr though. I would do Elf, Crypt, or Depths before going for a 3rd rune. That antimagic exec axe will be very helpful in Elf.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Welcome Maels! I just ascended my first MiBe (and first char in general) a few months ago. Here's the link to that YAVP (viewtopic.php?t=12104), there's some good advice and links to guides about tactics in there. If you don't have MR+++, you should be spamming trog's hand every time you see an enemy that could abyss/paralyze/some other form of insta-death-sentence you. Piety cost for th and beserk is pretty negligible; bia is more significant, but still absolutely worth using in any situation where you think you might be in trouble. Piety isn't hard to get for Trog anyway.

Both Vaults 5 and Slime 6 can be quite dangerous. Which I choose is a matter of what inventory I have. For Slime, I need rCorr, and I like to have ?summoning and some !haste, !might, and/or !agility for fighting TRJ. For Vaults, I need a way to clear the initial pack--usually blink--a reliable amount of MR (which, again, trog's hand), and then, um, enough other potions/wands/scrolls of get-out-of-terrifying-situation for whatever the level may hold. I also really recommend searching through previous Tavern threads, there are some quite detailed guides on surviving these levels (keeping in mind that V:5 changed recently so that all corners of each quadrant are open).

Also, if you haven't already, your fighting should be trained way higher than 11.5, and at this point it's probably worth training up a secondary ranged attack of some sort, either through weapons or evocables. Ranged weapons are nice with Trog because he will give you a ton of free ammo, and ranged weapons are just really strong anyway.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Thx for the tips! I decided to take a look on a couple of levels of the depths and then probably I'll try elven halls again. I found a golden dragon and now I have his armor haha. It looks pretty good but it really screws with my atk speed. Do I need to pump the amor skill to use it comfortably?

Re: MiBe going for first rune

GDA is generally terrible, it has high AC, yes, and resists, but it absolutely destroys your EV, and requires a great deal of Str to wear, which is usually considered less useful than Int or Dex.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Keep in mind that while you may not do Vault:5 for your third rune, it's generally still a good idea to clear vault 1-4 for experience, probably some shops, and access to the crypt, should you want to run crypt. If you've cleared elf and not yet done vaults, vaults 1-4 should be pretty easy.

I think vaults:5 is still a pretty reasonable third rune, of course, but keep in mind it's quite different from vaults:4.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

Yeah I already cleared Vaults 1-4 and it wasn't that bad, certainly easier than elven halls and the depths. I got an rCorr amulet so I'll give the slime pits a shot and if I can't handle it I'll try vaults:5.

Edit: Well, that was anticlimactic. I just finished the Slime Pits in like 5 minutes haha, the Elven Halls were way harder. Guess I'll now get ready for zot. Anything I should to in preparation before going down there? Should I just use every scroll of enchant weapon and armor I have now o is it possible I find something better as I go down?

Just use the enchant scrolls now, you might find something better, but I wouldn't count on it. Of course, I do tend to just dive Zot.

Damn, I finally died on zot:3. It actually wasn't that bad but my low int killed me, I didn't know that getting 0 on a stat could screw you so much. Oh well, next time I'll cure stat draining ASAP I guess haha

Ah, that sucks! What was statdraining you? Also, I'm with nilsbloodaxe, I've recently started diving Zot unless there is something I desperately need. At that point, I usually have enough XL and everything I need to win, so there's no reason to take any risk of death from clearing every floor. I do try to clear all the stairs in Z:4 though, for stairdancing in Z:5 and quick escape once I have the orb.

Re: MiBe going for first rune

It think it was a ghost moth and a draconian with a draining weapon. I thought about diving for the orb but, as I said, I wasn't really having a hard time. Yes, the monsters are pretty though but I just fought them one at a time and was doing fine. So I figured it was better to clear most of the levels so I didn't find anything nasty when I was coming up with the orb. But then I got the brainless status, and I was pretty much dead. But hey, I learned a lot from this run and I will be a LOT more careful about stat draining in the future haha, maybe put a couple of points in int just in case. The great thing about DCSS is that when you die you don't feel like the game screw you, if you die it was probably your fault. I'll do better with my next char :)

Re: MiBe going for first rune

jffi:
1. Eventually stat drain will recover if you wait long enough. If you get stat-drained to 0 but survive the fight, leave the level and just wait, it takes a long time, but eventually you'll recover.
2. Ghost moths do drain stats, draining weapons do not drain stats (draining weapons give you the "drain" status, and reduce your effective skill levels until you kill enough stuff)

Slight correction of your post:

The thing about DCSS is that when you die below the first few dungeon levels you usually don't feel like the game screwed you, if you die it was usually your fault. There are exceptions.
