I'm not sure if you're seriously considering using that axe, but if you are:

While it's certainly an interesting axe, and not completely terrible, the +12 only adds on average 6 damage. Hand axes have a base of 7 damage, and that base is increased by your axe/fighting skill. So your broad axe will pretty easily do 2-3 times the damage. Healing on hits is very, very strong, but not worth giving up that much damage.

Generally people use 2H axes over 1h axes. Battle axes are quite good, and executioner's axes are powerful if you can train that much axe skill. But Op have such terrible AC I can understand wanting a shield, so I'm not suggesting ditching the shield, just that usually OP will pick a different weapon type than axes. Since you already have a lot of axe skill, don't switch now.

M&F, Short blades, Long blades, Polearms all work quite well with or without a shield on a OpBe, Staves and axes work quite well if you don't need/want a shield. UC also works quite well (Particularly if you are using some sort of ranged weapon or throwing in conjunction with it) with or without a shield.

If you go unarmed, I'd recommend a shield fairly heavily - octopodes are unique in that they get to keep using their offhand punch with a shield. You still get the 50% chance of 1 aut extra delay, but that penalty alone is pretty small.
