Troll Spellcaster Problem

I love trolls and I love using spells. I rarely get runes and have never won. I want to know if using a troll as a hybrid melee/spellcaster can win the game.

My typical "build" for this is to level up unarmed combat, dodging, and fighting in that order of priority until about level 10. The early game isn't hard because being able to (unreliably) use level 1 and 2 spells as a beastly troll gives me most of what I need to survive to the bottom of the Lair and/or Orcish Mines. Depending on what class I go with, I usually follow Vehumet, Sif Muna, or Kiq. Around level 10 is when I start the transition into more serious spellcasting. During this period I feel somewhat vulnerable because playing around against harder enemies with mid level spells can waste one turn too many when their rate of failure is above 15%.

None of this information accounts for other issues with my game. I have plenty of stupid deaths that have nothing to do with the character and everything to do with poor decision making. I still misjudge situations regularly.

My question is this:

Am I doing something unworkable or am I just doing it wrong? What is the easiest way to make a troll that relies on spells work?

Chei is a possibility. Statue form is another. Mixing these can be dangerous unless you're an extremely careful player.

I'd probably recommend going sif, focusing on playing as a monk pre-temple, and only after you get sif, start training magic skills for piety. If you can get up to a few book gifts or find lucky book drops, you can start to get spells that you want. I'd probably try to stick to earth if you can, stone arrow/iron shot/LRD can take care of most anything in the game, and isn't much of an investment. You can also get statue form and haste.

It will be simplier to just go pure monk of course, but if you wanted to go magic, sif/haste/statue/ironshot/LRD is probably the least amount of experience needed to cover any threat in the game. You don't have to go earth, of course. Sif will protect you from your 35% fail miscasts, but the real solution is to just keep training the spells until you don't have miscasts, which yes is slower on a troll. Earth is only -1 at least.

It's likely your problems are in the specifics of what you're trying to do, rather than the generalities of your plan.

Troll spellcasters are certainly viable, what works best is to start with some UC, because troll claws are pretty much better than any other offense you can have as a troll, then grab some defense (this is a step that most people forget, because troll claws tear things to shreds so quickly that you think the game is made of tissue paper, until you just sort of lose all your hps and die) things that help you *not die* are a priority at this stage, getting some low-level defensive spells is a good idea, as long as you aren't *not using regular defenses* like fighting and dodging and shields. If it doesn't help you not-die in the immediate or very-short-term then you should ignore it.

If you can pick up some decent spells that actually *help* your "not dying" plan then you should do so, if they aren't available, continue to increase your other not-dying abilities. If you are like, trying to use conjurations with the aim of ditching your claws,then you should not do that, because troll claws are where it is *at* damage wise and using an inferior source of damage that costs a bunch of XP is just silly..

However not-dying is also largely influenced by using proper tactics, and no amount of proper skill-training will help with that.

Here are the spells that a troll spellcaster should use:

rmsl
swift
apport
butterflies
blink
regen
etc.

If you insist on using higher level spells to deal damage, I would probably just use vehumet or ash to save experience as best you can and use earth magic since you have the least bad aptitude in it. But playing this kind of character is just an exercise in torturing yourself - why would you do it?

Here's an example of a troll of sif muna, at roughly the middle of lair, although I fled lair because I'm not yet comfortable fighting hydras with no large rocks or AC. Have quite a good bit of spells due to some lucky book drops, and got a lot of sif piety because of an amulet of faith, so no real complaints. It is a bit awkward getting spells this early on, your physical skills are a bit low, and I can't really train much dodging, but hey, you asked. A pure fighter troll is easier.

Sif already gifted me regen and haste, although it'll take a bit to get haste online.

It is hard to give specific advice without knowing which background you are going for, or (even more basically) what you mean by "troll spellcaster."

Trolls starting with books are really good, but only if you use spellcasting to support what Trolls do well and shore up their weaknesses, and if you don't rush the spellcasting (or you'll keep your other skills too low).

If you are trying to kill stuff primarily with spells on a Troll early on, then yes that's an intentional challenge and just inviting frustration, as tabstorm says. So long as you aren't doing that, though, a number of book backgrounds are really good starts for trolls. You just need to be willing to countenance somewhat higher spell failure chances than you might be accustomed to when, say, playing an elf (of either elevation), and you may struggle to make good use of spells that really want high spell power.

In general, you should start by training unarmed combat, and unarmed combat alone, and killing stuff with your claws. Keep doing that until UC is around 6. Then focus on getting one or two low level spells from your spell book online. Then more unarmed combat, and defenses. Later on you can pick up more spells from your book, but don't neglect your core skills, UC, fighting, dodging. Keep your spell training focused as much as possible, only picking up new stuff when you are sure you have good enough defenses and UC for your point in the game.

Lots of spells are still pretty good without high spell power/success. A number of those were already mentioned. As far as starting books go, some spells that can be quite (surprisingly, even) effective without that much training and with only poor-to-mediocre spell power include the following:

call imp
repel missiles
ozocubu's armour
summon ice beast
conjure flame
sticky flame
mephitic cloud
dazzling spray
spider form
animate skeleton/dead
regeneration

Some other spells (like Vampiric Draining) do benefit a lot from having good spell power, but since they are single school of the primary type that you start with, that's not such a big deal.

Also troll warpers are really quite good (Shield of Golubria, while not stellar defensively, is better than nothing when you need *something* and portal projectile with large rocks (and blowgun needles) is the bomb, blink lets you get out of trouble (or at least get some space so you can regen hps) and you start with not-abyssmal int, which is very helpful for casting spells.

I wish there was a book start that came with confusing touch, that would be lots of excellent.

It was a lot easier when I could throw exploding potions, but transmuter is my most common class for a troll. What I do from there depends on what I find in the dungeon. If I find a book/item with blink, I'll feel comfortable worshiping Vehumet to give me some ranged damage. Jiyva, Nemelex, or Xom are gods I would instantly choose if found super early. What I mean by troll spellcaster is a troll that uses and relies on spells throughout the game. I don't always do the same thing, so I tried to give a general description of the common elements in my troll game, looking for advice and new ideas that I wouldn't have come up with on my own. I found your response to be among the most helpful in terms of guiding me to look at my game in a new light, and I thank you for that.

So you are training at least 2 spell schools that need rather high skill (transmutations/conjurations)? That might be where your problems are coming from. You can focus on conjurations well enough as a troll of vehumet so picking a conjurations-based book background makes sense.
If you want ranged damage on a transmuter start, I think Makhleb or Qazlal* would be more suitable. They both do a lot more than just give you ranged damage and are less skill-intensive.

I wrote a lengthy guide for troll conjurers last year - it refers to the old conjurer book so it isn't really a Cj guide anymore, but maybe there are still some tips in there that are useful. link A lot of it is applicable Wizard, which also starts with higher INT for what it's worth.
A few things that are wrong/questionable in that guide: how much armour to train (I would train some armour in mottled dragon armour these days), that you shouldn't move during combat with chei (you should in many circumstances, just don't forget that you are twice as slow), Vehumet has been updated to gift at lower piety.

TrTm doesn't sound like a great start in general. Spider Form is pretty useful, but Blade Hands is too exp-intensive to be useful early on. Also, one of the reasons Tm is good is that Book of Changes compensates quite well for low UC damage at low/medium levels for species without claws. That doesn't apply to Tr.

(*only available if you are playing trunk builds, not stable .14 - not as good as Makhleb anyway)

TrTm of Chei was my first win (back in 0.9 I think), but it was a much stronger in that time, I don't think that TrTm is a very good choice now.
TrFi of Chei would be my advice, if you dont mind Chei obviously. UC and shield early on, + large rocks. All you have to do is decide wheter a tough situation needs just a consumable or a tele. Midgame you can start to train magic (likely after reaching at least UC 15 and shield 9 and fighting 10). With Chei you can afford to wear even a medium armor FDA, IDA or PDA.
If you want to be a real caster from the begin I would pick TrWz, focus UC as usual and then get mephitic cloud to a castable level (20-30% fail). Most other spells from your starting book are very useful (as already listed also by "and into") If you plan on doing most dmg from spells Vehumet is clearly the way to go. There is also a slightly outdated guide on the wiki, it's for TrCj but it now fits better to TrWz.
Beware that when mephitic cloud starts to be less effective you'll be far from overpowered...

Like everybody else said, Trolls start with one of the best weapons and the ability to use one of the best ranged weapons. Given that you have an innate ability to do huge damage, augmenting that with spellcasting is dicey and unnecessary. But I think my example is a good one for showing that following a generally sensible plan (Chei for heug stats, Wz for good hybrid-y spells, hit dudes with claws and rocks) makes TrWz^Chei an ezmode combo, even if you, like me, suck at the game.
