CPA in early dungeon. An early eveningstar from Trog, followed by a fantastically enchanted Great Mace. And then I rebranded the eveningstar and got Vampirism! I'm tempted to pick up a shield and go one-handed, but I'm not experienced enough to know how valuable vampirism would be vs sticking with the antimagic Great Mace.

Advise me, so I can avoid turning this into YASD, please

I would use vampiric eveningstar. Drop some potions/scrolls, they can be destroyed even with conservation. Also you have an unid-ed wand.

Sometime in the future (I'd say xl20+) it will become worth it to start training dodging. Even in CPA. Because once your dodging hits a certain magic breakpoint related to how heavy your armour is for you, it will start incrementing EV as fast as though you were wearing robe thereafter. Don't need to know it now, just an in-advance FYI.

So. V5 is... completely crazy. Immolation took care of the initial party fairly easily; but when you've got 5 stone giants beating on you at once with a few casters floating around in the background reanimating things, even CPA and a 7/7 Vamp Eveningstar isn't enough.

Use your consumables early and often (as opposed to: late, bloodied and beaten!), reverse direction whenever you see something in zot:5 to drag it out for a one-on-one fight, haste and rF+ for every orb of fire fight and you should be good to go.
Also, if you can get out of line of sight of an orb of fire or ancient lich (since it takes about 3 turns to do this swap), swap to the great mace of antimagic for them. After one hard hit they basically can't cast at all while you proceed to beat them down, it feels awesome.

So. Today, I learned that it is NOT OK to ignore bezerking orb guardians. Swapped to the antimagic gmace when aliches started showing. Then, OOF appears. I haste and move to start hammering, everything is going swell.. until a party of guardians and a moth of wrath sneak in.

Good thing is you got there in under three hours, that's pretty damn fast. I always treat Zot as the "final boss" and play extra careful there. It's really important there to lure stuff instead of charging into them. You almost never want to be fighting two or more monsters except if its draconians (though packs should be broken up if possible) or death cobs.

Your choice of words 'move in' implies to me that you walked towards an orb of fire instead of lured it out of the vault. Bad choice, and now you know why - the orb vault is packed full of crap to a fractal level, and you want to disturb it as little at a time as possible.

Only when compared to depths, which are incredibly packed. Also, shield with AC is way better than reflection. Also also, you should have decided on either 1- or 2- handed weapons, not switch between categories. And fighting in the open next to the orb vault is suicidal.
