Hello everyone, I've just recently come back to Crawl after taking a break of something like 1.5 years.

As you can see, I'm currently wearing this quite nice +3 leather armor of rCold. However, I managed to slay an ice dragon in Lair and obtain its hide, and I'm now wondering whether I should enchant it to make an IDA. An IDA would boost my AC further as well as guarantee at least one pip of rC regardless of my body temperature which would be quite nice. However, my strength is not that high and unless I miscalculated, with the new AEVP formula I would get 3 points of AEVP with 13 STR, and I'm not sure if 3 extra AC would worth the -3 EV and the spellcasting/stealth penalties.

Also, I've found two elemental evokers recently. Since those apparently got completely reworked in trunk, and I haven't played the game in forever, I'm not sure how should I respond to this find. I've heard that the new elemental evokers are great, but should I invest exp in Evocations just for them? And if I should, how much?

If you have xp to spare its definitely worth investing some EVO for the new evokers. I usually aim for somewhere around 13 skill if I'm going to be using them frequently. They are still useful at lower skill levels but you don't get as many minions summoned per use.

A +0 IDA is just 3 more AC than your +3 leather, but eventually you'd be able to enchant it up (to +8 I think?) while +3 is the most that leather can get. In addition, training Armour skill will give you more bonus AC if your base AC is higher. So yes, I would go for IDA. Maybe not right away but eventually for sure. In my experience, 12 STR is perfectly fine for FDA/IDA/PDA, but you can still choose to level up STR if you find it lacking.

Played some more today. Finished Orc, found a randart ring with +3 str in a labyrinth, so I decided to enchant the hide. Unfortunately, I discovered that even with 14 base strength and the +3 str ring, wearing the IDA still gives -6 to my EV!

In the end, I decided that the +3 AC isn't worth dealing with all the penalties. Maybe I'll wear the IDA after I've enchanted it a bit and have some spare xp to put into the Armour skill. Until then, I think I'll stick with the leather armour.

Well the ring gives rF+, rN+ and Stealth++ as well, the +3 str is mostly a nice addition :)

Well, in this case I suppose that you can keep the ring !
Are you relying on your spells or weapon to deal with monsters ? That changes the impact of spell failure due to IDA...

Decided to wear a MDA instead. rC++ is nice, but I kinda like having EV.

Tabbed my way through Swamp, and cleared Spider till the last level. Kind of lost as to where to visit next, though. How does the new Vaults (1-4) compare to Depths in terms of difficulty?

I'm wondering if I should do Forest when I find it. I know people think doing Forest isn't worth it, but I've never been to there and I feel sorta obliged to do it at least once. Forest isn't that bad with stasis and fireball... Right?

Also, with evokable sources of Dmsl and haste (and a crapton of recharge scrolls), is there any reason to train Charms at all?

I'm a little worried about my ability to killdudes. The pain trident is nice, but I can't really fight orbs of fire with it.

Now that evokable items are actually good, inventory management has gone from tiresome to absolutely maddening. Even with dropping all unnessary items, I still find myself constantly running back to my stash. Also, am I crazy or are low-temperature LOs much better than high-temperature ones?

Vaults is easier than Depths, generally.

Kiku gives you tools, like corpse delivery + Simulacrum. And anyway, as LO you have plenty of rF so OoF's will have a tough time killing you.

Well at high temp, you lose some AC, get cold vulnerability, and can't read scrolls, balanced against rF+++ and fire enhancer. The first 2 drawbacks are mitigated by IDA (which is why IDA is generally the best armour for LOs), and you have wand of tele so losing scrolls is less critical. On the other hand, maybe you're not getting much use out of the fire enhancer, though it should have a noticeable effect on Fireball at least.

Hmm... Haven't thought about receive corpses + simulacrum. Wouldn't simulacrums die rather quickly against OoFs due to rF-, though?

The extra AC at low temperature is the main reason I think low temp LO is better than high temp LO. That and being able to use scrolls. The heat aura and rF+++ at high temp are of course nice to have, but well, suffice to say, I'd choose a perma-cooled LO over a perma-heated one any day!

Simulacrums do in fact die very quickly against OOF, however OOF's will pretty much always attack you rather than the simulacrums, So typically you can maneuver so you have a few simu's behind the OOF, doing damage while you're attacking from the other side.

Simulacrum is a very short-lived spell anyway, so the fact that they die quickly isn't a big deal, the damage output in that short amount of time can be *very* high. Think of it as more of a direct damage attack spell, one that works best at short range.

I see. Still, with -8 aptitude in ice magic, getting simulacrum online might prove... tricky. :) I'll probably go with the tried-and-true method of "tab it with a bardiche" instead.

In other news: Depths are brutal! I'm on Depths:3 and I've already killed four golden dragons and four tentacled monstrosities. I don't recall these dudes being this common on D:27!

How the hell am I supposed to deal with vault wardens on V:5? The old Vaults ending was hard, but now that vault wardens exist it's almost as dangrous as Zot:5.

You need to be prepared to take out Vault 5 without stair dancing. There are several ways to do this, but probably ?blinking + !speed is safest and easiest among the options that are nearly universal. Get into one of the hallways with the scroll, haste yourself with the potion, and put some distance between you and the central area, so you take out the guards in small groups at a time in the main corridor, then clear outer perimeter, slowly moving toward middle and clearing that, then go into and clear out each quadrant one-by-one.

Control tele and ?magic mapping also works but is riskier and more finicky, in my experience.

You don't need blinking for that, unless you have like 20 max hp. Just haste before going downstairs and walk through one of the gaps in the vault guards.

That's generally true (assuming not a naga) but sometimes nastier guys aside from the guaranteed vault guards can make that dicey. There are no restrictions on teleporting in V5 as you know. Then again it is always preferable to have a scroll of blinking, regardless.

In any case, Scalding Steam, just getting into one of the corridors as fast as possible is generally the safest way to handle V5 entrance. Stair dancing V5 takes unnecessary risks anyway, even not taking wardens into account.

This seems like a reasonable strategy. However, I'm not sure I can take on 24 vault guards at the same time even when buffed (though I suppose corridor + lamp of fire will deal with that rather nicely), and besides, I'd be screwed if something with smite (say, a sphinx) shows up.

I think my main mistake was that I made too much noise (note to self: torment + immolation is not a viable V:5 strategy, LO of Kiku or not). However, a sentinel's mark would have still made everyone on the floor come for my ass anyway. Truly, those new Vaults monsters are dicks. :?

In my last game I was wearing 2 rings of magic protection for Vaults 5 despite having much better rings. Maybe it was a bad idea but it worked nicely as I was not a tank and really wanted to control number of monsters in LoS at least in open terrain.

Yeah, get into the side corridors and fight things there, fighting in the entryway just brings doom to your head. There's a lot of ways to get out of the ring of guards, blink being the easiest and most obvious, but there are some other ways. Regardless of *how* you do so, getting down the side passages and around a corner makes surviving MUCH easlier.
