Which item to buy?

I'm A Hill Orc Fighter of Beogh. Not sure if it was good idea choosing Polearms over Axes, but well, I did.
I cleared the Orc Mines (for the first time, actually), and I have some extra gold, and am not sure what I should buy.
Here's my dump:

What I am considering is one of these two:
the +2 hat of the Bear Spirit {Spirit, +Rage rN+ MR+} (1218 gold)
the +3 pair of gauntlets of War {Acc+5 Dam+5} (1802 gold)

I only have ~1500 so will have to save a bit for gauntlets.

So, tips?

Re: Which item to buy?

Buy the gauntlets of war, they're very good. The hat is good too, I'd buy it later.

Re: Which item to buy?

Get the hat, it allows immediate access to infinite berserking if you are ever in trouble, and spirit is good for your characters.

Also, MR is crazy good, I don't know how much bear spirit gives, but just about any is worth it.

Also, rN removes the most frustrating thing in the game: draining. Well, at least that's my personal opinion, I think most people would argue otherwise, butt hats beside the point.

Gloves of war is incredibly good, you will likely use them on 99% of the characters you find them on, but the immediate use of bear spirit seems better IMO. Get them later for sure. That's just me though.

Re: Which item to buy?

FWIW, I do have one source or rN+ (chainmail) and also Amulet of Spirit.

But I do agree that Drain is very frustrating, and rN stacks up to 3, right?

Re: Which item to buy?

Hat of the Bear Spirit has 50 MR. Already having Spirit does make it significantly less attractive (although for the future, know that you should NEVER wear unidentified artefact jewellery! It won't identify when you put it on, so there is almost no significant benefit to doing so, and many possible detriments such as Contam, or, if you leave it on, negative resistances). It basically comes down to how much you like berserking; I would actually get the gauntlets first myself, particularly with your crappy weapon, though of course I would get the hat too later.
The rN+ should not be any sort of factor in this decision at all whatsoever.

Re: Which item to buy?

Lol god do I love I pads.

Anyway, if you are like duvessa and feel confident that you won't be in a situation where you will need to berserk, then I would go with the gauntlets. If you are still going for your first win, I would say berserk is a much stronger tool for you to succeed, at least until later in the game(and by the time that happens, you will have already gotten enough for the gauntlets anyway).

Thanks for the replies.

I ended up reading a scroll which ended up being one of acquirement, and not wanting to risk it and get something crappy I opted for gold and got just nuff to get both of these items.

Be careful with berserk, there is a chance to pass out when it ends.

The bigger reason is that an extra +5 enchantment is really significant on a cruddy vorpal trident - which the character will be stuck with for a long time unless it switches to two-handed weapons (which I find isn't worth convincing people to do anymore). With this character's current skills and stats the gauntlets would increase its damage output by around 25% against a hydra and even more against monsters with better defenses. Yeah, berserk gives a bigger damage bonus but you can also berserk or quaff might/speed while wearing gauntlets of war!
But yeah I would have done gold acquirement and gotten both anyway, so not terribly relevant to the original poster anymore.

Got a Demon Trident of Elec, so, the crappy old thing that you keep bashing is set aside.
