I've come to uncertain grounds as to where to optimally take this character. So far he seems pretty powerful, and I'm thinking I'll go into needlestabbing for the endgame, but I don't know if I should be focusing on throwing or defenses first, or where to go with armour.

Steam Dragon Armour or Mottled Dragon Armour would be the best.
Your defense is good enough, I would train Throwing immediately to start getting needles gifts.

nice find on the quickblade. Looking at your skills, it looks like you are making all the right choices. I would follow Sandman's advice here. Pearl Dragon armour is the best for your build, but very rare. Later I'd also definitely train up evocations because you will be finding the very useful lamp/phial/fan or stone .. or rods. You will definitely need them later with the "no spellbooks/ no magic" Trog handicap.

If you can't find good armour, the Enchantress will be wearing the armour you need, if Enchanted Forest shows up for you.

Training any skill because you will maybe probably find something that will use it later is rarely a good idea in Crawl.

To be fair, what you are saying is totally true, it's just that evocations as a trog worshiper is widely accepted as a fun and interesting supplement for ranged combat/magic.

Well yeah, you are just definitely are not guaranteed rods. New evocables are somewhat common but 10-ish Evo is usually enough for them.
(What I would probably train on that guy now is Fighting.)

To be clear, I didn't say to train evocations now, I said "later".. to me more clear, I should of said, later when you find some cool evocables , training evocations is a good idea. And yes, evocations higher than 10 is a good idea for a Trog worshipper, especially. (since you won't be putting any skill points in magic or even in invocations) The power of the evocables do greatly scale in power (damage/duration) and reduced hunger cost when you have 15-27 skill levels in them. Halfling evocation skill aptitude is +2, so that really helps too.

Also, I never said you are guaranteed rods. The chance for rods rises if you come across the Labyrinth (I wouldn't be surprised if the Labyrinth guarantees a rod or 2, but maybe that is just my experience).. In my present game I found one rod in the Spider's Nest, and another rod in Crypt:5, but I didn't find any Labyrinth. .. In another game I got 4 rods from the Labyrinth. But I never remember clearing the Labyrinth and not getting a rod in the newer builds.

I think the chance of getting a rod is 100% if you use a scroll of acquirement to get one(as long as you are worshipping trog, that is). However, getting a scroll of acquirement isn't exactly 100% either, and whether or not its worth it depends on what you are trying to play.

Anyways, like they said, fighting would probably be the best choice.

Finished Swamp, while training up throwing. Needles+low HD Nagas let me breeze through snake 1-4, and now I'm in Vaults.
I found a nice rod that I'm considering charging up, and I'm debating between Mottled and Fire dragon armour, or b -the +3 troll leather armour of Distant Worlds {Acc+2 Dam+4 Curse} that's in a shop. I found a manual of fighting in a shop, as well, so I'm thinking that's my next place to skill for a while.

Did Vaults 1-4, Snake 5, and a bit of Depths.
Picked up a Mottled Dragon armour, noticed a trove that wants a +2 storm dragon armour (I have 1 EA scroll and the hide)
Picked up a wand of hasting as well, but I'm still a little light on needles, which is annoying.
I'm getting to the point that some of the monsters in Depths are hard to deal with while conserving needles, trying to figure where to go next.

That's one of the best rods to find, honestly. Freezing Cloud will make your life so much easier.. especially on long narrow corridors. I'd definitely now train more evoc too (with fighting), it will greatly reduce the hunger cost and make the Freezing Cloud much more powerful (as well as the fans/phial/lamp you found).. with +2 apt on evocations you should be at 15-20 pretty quickly. You will love it if you decide to do Elf:3 later (not now, you need more MR or you will be visiting the abyss.) .. I would definitely use a scroll of recharging or 2 on the rod , but only after you deplete it in battle.. recharging will not only recharge it, but make the idle recharge rate faster. Even if you know most of this, I put this out there in case its helpful to someone.

Wow your throwing skill is almost maxxed.. Personally I think high dodging is more important than throwing. If you find that you are no longer one-shotting sleeping monsters, you should train more short blades.

When you examine your rod, it will tell you how much spell power /hunger each spell has. As you get evocations higher, you can start to see that power bar go up and the hunger go down.

Is there a Crypt in your game ? Or is it Enchanted Forest? If it is Enchanted Forest, I would definitely do that next. You don't have any rN+, so that would make Crypt a challenge.

You are very lucky to find that Fighting manual.. Looks like the rng is very kind to you.

I can kill monsters if I stab them, but more and more things either see invisible or have too many HD for me to sneak up on reliably. I'm guessing I'm going to have to start using up my needles until I've got better evo. Oh well, not the end of the world.

If you just want a win, you can get the Orb at this point, and not worry about mutations. Especially if you have a potion of cure mutation that you could tactically quaff if needed on your run.

oh, a bit of bad luck with the faerie dragon armour, your old armour will probably be better once you find more enchant armor scrolls.. or you find an armor with resistance(s)...

If you want more runes, I really think you could benefit from clearing Elf:3 .. you could be lucky with some better equipment. The only worry with Elf is that you can get banished to the Abyss, but I think at this point, the Abyss should not be a problem for you, and while you are there you could get the Abyssal rune. But yes, mutation can be a problem in the abyss.. how many potions of cure mutation do you have? At least halflings have 66% mutation resistance, so that helps.

In fact, its entirely possible to clear Elf without being banished simply because you have freezing cloud, and evoc at a high level. Elf is optional, but so was Forest, which is arguably more difficult than Elf:3.

But if you want to do more end game stuff, Elf:3 may have the amulet of rmut.. and with it, you could even clear Slime, if you want multiple runes.
Congrats on finding a wand of hasting too, that's probably the best place to spend future scrolls of recharging.

This won't be my first win, just my first online. I'm debating between winning now, but currently my highscore on runes is 5, and I think I'd like to do more. I only have one !mut, and my best resist armours are all robes. There is a d - [D:7] the +2 leather armour of Inquiry {rElec rPois MR++} (661 gold) in a shop, would that be enough to get me through Elf?

I've got a single EA scroll, if I get 2 more I can enchant my storm dragon hide and get a trove, not sure if it's worth it.

Crosstraining might also let me switch my main weapon to a - [Zot:1] the +5,+9 scimitar "Ninimyff" {slice, +Inv rF+ MR++ SInv}, but we'll have to see how things turn out. I'm at least going to clear Elf 2 before deciding what to do.

Ha has 27*3=81 MR at XL 27, Trog's Hand adds another 70 so it is 151. I've heard no monster can affect playing character with MR 178 so you would need MR 27 from other sources. That means any source of MR is enough, even the weakest armour of MR.

1-shot a couple pan lords, beat up the Royal Jelly, looted some Elves. Probably going to go Abyss, and then decide whether or not to do Hell. Still have no clue how to beat Tomb.

Congrats, you have gone far. Once you have 15 runes, you probably will want to try a Zig.

I would definitely do Abyss and all of Pan before doing Tomb. I think some players even do Tomb last, even after the Hells.

I completed Tomb for the first time the other day but I had Kiku as my god, and playing Gargoyle, both of which help shield torment (and Kiku shields death curses)

You can try the waters there. 2 simple tips:

1) try to take on the Greater Mummies one at a time
2) wear an amulet of stasis to prevent being slowed by death curses. Your high MR should be fine for Sphinx, but sphinx can paralyse. I don't think MR prevents being slowed by death curse. But, I could be wrong.

It's not so bad, with your stealth so high, you may even be able to stab them while they sleep like you did some of the Pan Lords.

With my character, I had to get them to follow me away one at a time from unexplored areas, to avoid more Greater Mummies joining the fight. Your guy is much stronger than I was when I cleared it, just expect to be tormented and smited.

The one cool thing as another poster mentioned, the Tomb layout is pretty much the same every time, so there are few surprises. It's only the first time that is a challenge.
