Regeneration Question

Facts as I know them: Rings of regeneration and troll hides both cause regeneration at the cost of hunger.

My questions:

1 - is the hunger equal on both?

2 - Is increased hunger only caused during times of regeneration use (while healing), or is it constant?

3 - How bad is the hunger cost?

Re: Regeneration Question

1- So far as I understand, the regeneration spell, troll hide effect, and ring all increase hunger and healing by the same amount. They all stack as well.

2- The hunger increase only kicks in while you're healing. This is different from the racial mutations, where races that get fast healing also get fast metabolism that runs all the time.

3- It's minimal. I've had a randart troll leather armor on a spriggan all game, with the regen spell too when things got hairy, and I've barely noticed the increased food cost. Still had more than enough permafood to make it through all the main branches and Zot, with chow to spare.

Re: Regeneration Question

So...since you've got a different source of information - do you agree that those hunger increases only apply when the regeneration effect is active (i.e. while wounded?) Or is it always increasing the hunger factor?

Re: Regeneration Question

About the regeneration, i seem to have a problem with hunger and i can't find if it is related to it :

I have read on the bot that :
The regeneration mutations conflict with slow metabolism, but do not otherwise affect your nutrition.

I am currently playing a Deep Elf Air Elementalist, and this lead me to a question : is this statement always valid in 0.8.x ?

Very early in the game, while testing random potions, the character drank potion of mutation that actually gave this character " Regeneration 2 " (You heal very quickly.) and at the point i am currently :

My character is going hungry nearly every 5 minutes, often after a though fight, just resting to full health/magic is enough to get him to reach hungry, and from the Hungry status, going automatically (SHIFT+G) to Lair:1, my stash in which my permafood is stockpiled (considering i am running into the "oh i'm hungry.. to bad my chuncks rotted just a few turns ago" problem very very often) is enough to get him falling into the "Very Hungry" status.

All i can think at that point is that i played a lot with various classes while using the mummy and vampire race before going Deep Elf, so it could have made me used on not noticing the nutrition loss when not using a sustenance ring + amulet of gourmand.

I can't see anything in my dump.txt that has something increasing unnaturally that character hunger to explain why i find him so often running into the hungry status then very hungry when travelling back to my stash.
Out of the Regeneration 2 mutation, but the bot mention it does not affect nutrition.
All my spells are hunger free, so that can't be it, so is there something i am missing ?

Re: Regeneration Question

Your character is going from 'hungry' to 'very hungry' after making the trip all the way from Vaults 5 to Lair 1? This doesn't seem strange to me, that's a lot of turns and you're burning food at the normal rate. The difference between the top of 'hungry' and the top of 'very hungry' is only 533 units of hunger, while the difference between the top of <no message> and the top of 'hungry' is 4,399 units of hunger. With gourmand, the difference between 'engorged' and 'hungry' is 9,400 units.

The regeneration mutation doesn't cause you extra hunger, but you should carry around some permafood anyway. Or go hunt down some yaktaurs; even if you just hit 'very hungry' you should have time to find some chunks.

Re: Regeneration Question

Nice to know that regeneration mutation does not cause hunger, it saved my Deep Elf so many times that i didn't wanted to drink one of my cure mutation potion even despite the -10% health , fearing that bad luck would keep the -10% health and delete my regeneration 2.
If it does not increase nutrition loss, no more thought about those cure mutation potion.

I didn't thought that the difference between each level of hunger were not roughly the same, should have looked that on the wiki. The quickness of the automatic travel too certainly didn't helped to make me notice that it was a lot of turns wasted each time i was going back from a branch to Lair:1.
May explain why from Hungry i was going to Very Hungry everytime then.

It's not like food is a problem in my current game as i cleared Hive, it's just that it's not really entertaining to get back and forth to my stash every time i need food, as my elf does not have much strength i avoid carrying too much permafood to make room for battle equipment, as from what i read going burndened increase the nutrition loss by turn.

Now if only those carried chuncks were not rotting that fast.

Re: Regeneration Question

Perhaps set up a mini-stash at the entrance to Vaults, or wherever you're clearing at the moment? Monsters won't mess with your stuff while you're off-level, so if you have a stash of consumables right on the entry of D they won't bother it. Once you've cleared Vaults down to 7, you can move whatever you want to keep to your main stash in one or two trips, and move your consumables to the next mini-stash in your sequence. The rubbish can be disposed of or left behind.
