YASD level 27 TrMo of Okawaru, amazingly bad luck

So I'm fighting a few bad guys in Zot:3, I'm down to 96 HP but I'm easily in control of the situation (I'm in a good strategic position with options to blink, teleport, heal, or berserk). I hit level 27, then the very next turn a bone dragon pushes me into a previously-undetected Zot trap. I'm paralysed for six turns and I'm dead. This one made me sad. I was seriously kicking ass, shredding orbs of fire left and right.

I've never won with a troll or a monk before. I wonder if taking unarmed combat to 27 was premature, any opinions? Should I have trained armour or dodging higher? Should I have worn heavier armour?

...Yeah, seriously, wear better armour next time; FDA or something. Don't worry, casting in FDA is still pretty easy, especially if you're following Oka (spam Heroism to reduce the failure rate).

That steam dragon armour looks ok but if you're going to wear it you want more dex and more dodging.

In 0.12 you should get to 8.6 traps so you will 100% of the time detect any traps that are adjacent to you.

Shields on a troll: Heavy shield get 15 skill. If you don't want to invest that much (still mid game?) get a regular shield and 9 skill.

You can use a shield with less than those values, and the penalties are pretty small, but that will remove all penalties.

Heavy armor you can't remove all penalties, but having 10+ is fine for anything up to -3EV. Late game getting it even higher is a good idea, but early on you don't need too much. 27 unarmed is a very good idea, although if you are worshipping okawaru you do have the option to leave it at 22 and use heroism for the last 5. I'd probably still get it to 27 eventually, but that's personal taste.

Troll unarmed combat damage is already very high. Personally I don't see much reason to get more than ~20 in a 3-rune game in which I cast spells. The apt isn't amazing and the last levels are really costly while not making that much of a difference.

It is impossible to remove shield penalty for UC. You still will get a random 0-0.1 aut delay

That's a pretty small delay, isn't it? Particularly since a large shield is so useful on this build.

This really shouldn't be your highest spell skill

Why wear this when you have an rF ring that *doesn't* have negative slaying? I'm also assuming this is on right now for zot and it's normally a swap.

I guess I mean both, but more the latter. Putting xp into throwing won't be that helpful for you compared to putting it somewhere else, but it's still perfectly reasonable to throw a couple of large rocks or something every now and then. You might also have noticed that you were getting some rock/javelin gifts from okawaru, which slightly dilutes your other gifts.

Why not? I used a dagger of venom in the early game. And the war axe had sInv; it was only for unseen horrors.

Basically, the main draw of a troll is its considerable unarmed damage. If you have, say, 6 unarmed skill, which is attainable early on, you should be doing about 9 damage per turn, which outpaces a dagger of venom.

Probably this supply could be managed better. Having these as your endgame potions is far from ideal.
