(CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

I've been running through many iterations of MfHe lately.. My best IIRC had a trident of venom and died on DL7 to overconservatism ;) (I tend to spend too long trying to find something to chop up rather than eat permafood, and occasionally end up starving to death.).
More recently, I switched to the git version, which currently has a hilariously difficult idea of what monsters to generate -- but also generates significantly better items (and is way prettier) - hence "Hard Mode". To illustrate, one time I went down the stairs to DL2 and died -instantly- to a centaur shooting me with hmm, something flamey.. probably flaming arrows. Another time I acquired a conga line of 12+ assorted monsters on DL1 before I even had a weapon.

My current iteration encountered Prince Ribbit on DL4 -- okay, seems manageable -- and then also encountered Menaure! I don't even have anything flamey to burn him with, no teleport scrolls to GTFO using, and my only unidentified scroll quite clearly isn't Blink (not to mention I haven't even encountered any ordinary mummies at this point). He's immune to poison, so I only really have two options: Evoke my Wand of Lightning, which seems rather unlikely to save me in time - he has plenty of HP IIRC, or hope that one of the two unIDed potions I have is of speed. Divine protection will probably do enough for me that he won't immediately kill me, but I'd still have to get enough distance that I could escape up the stairs without him following.

Edit: Yep, it -was- a potion of speed. Unfortunately after getting some distance from Menaure, an ogre stopped me and fatally bashed me just before I reached the stairs ( I got trapped in a corridor between the ogre and Menaure)..

Edit2: Okay, after restarting, I wandered out of the entry vault, pacified some rats, and fell down a shaft. Yes, on DL1  Pacify worked okay there though, ran into a corridor followed by the 7 monsters that saw me when I fell down, and pacified an adder in their midst. Then shortly after that ran into Ijyb, but escaped before he woke up.

So far I've been opting for Int first on levelups (since I always start with 13 str, 12 int, 11 dex) , but I'm a bit unclear on whether Int actually benefits Invocations. If not, I'll go for Dex instead.

Do I need Armour skill to avoid light leather armour occasionally 'hindering my movements'? My current plan is to train Invocations exclusively until it reaches level 10, then go for some secondary stuff like Dodging, Armour and a bit of weapon skill (hopefully Polearms). But by then, of course, light leather armour should be obsolete. eh?

EDIT3: okay, looks like that run of consistently increased difficulty was just a fluke (or else it was fixed in my next rebuild of DCSS), as I've also had a run of consistently-tame iterations for a while now. Adjusting title accordingly.

Re: (CIP) MeHe + "Hard Mode"

If you look at the map in your chardump, up->up->up left from where you are is a good spot to use the wand of lightning. If you aim it at the wall beyond Menkaure, you can hit him twice with each zap.

It would look something like this:

Re: (CIP) MeHe + "Hard Mode"

Rebounds, of course! Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind for the current iteration. In case it's not clear in the above post, that iteration of the character semi-successfully escaped Menkaure, only to be flattened by an ogre in a single hit. (should have used Divine Protection and then the wand :/)

So Menkaure is not as dangerous as I thought, despite having Torment? or you just reckon that zapping him repeatedly and praying he dies before you is a better strategy than running away ;) ?

His torment is scary, but beyond that he's not so bad.

Also, Elyvilon hates when you kill things while under divine protection.

Re: (CIP) MeHe + "Hard Mode"

Ah, true. I wish I could say that was why I didn't do it :)

Currently going pretty well -- CL5 on DL4, a large stock (35) of poisoned needles but no blowgun, just got access to Greater Healing, Inv @ 6.8

EDIT: ... aaand, dead. Killed by a necrophage on DL5; got trapped between it and a horde of jackals. I realize now that I should have immediately started spamming the wand of digging as soon as I was trapped; as it is my efforts were too late.

EDIT2: Okay, restarted. Nothing of note yet except just now encountering Crazy Yiuf with his quarterstaff of chaos on DL2. He didn't notice me. Think I'll check up on the spoilers for chaos brand before engaging him, at the very least.

EDIT3: didn't want to mess with anything that could emulate distortion brand.. got down to DL6 and was killed in the open due to not being able to pacify some orc priests+warriors in time.. and having no teleport source (and everyone else was resistant to my Wand of Teleportation; wish I could have used it on myself.)

You can. This is in fact, the primary use of that wand. There's a reason why it's one of the rarest wands.

I decided to stay silent on it as that'll get solved with more player experience but since it's been mentioned: this so-called "hard mode" is a delusion. Crawl has always occasionally thrown overpowered enemies/items in early floors. Occasionally. It's just a fluctuation of luck that you only saw this recently.

Re: (CIP) MfHe + "Hard Mode"

to that end, i caught a centaur on D:1 the other day... and a necrophage on D:2. I remembered reading something about people complaining that necrophages should be stronger/appear earlier in the dungeon... i guess we know which way that went. I also agree that the new tiles are really nice looking. especially the new octopode. i love it. also, try a troll in troll leather armor... looks like a radioactive hulk.

Nope, you don't get it, it's consistent. I played 0.11 for many characters, most of which were MfHe, and so far, every single trunk game (10 IIRC) has had more loot, more monsters, more uniques. It's consistently twice as hard to get to the same DL as 0.11

I'm not in the mood to give a lecture on statistical analysis. Short answer: insignificant sample size.

Re: (CIP) MfHe + "Hard Mode"

Allow me to clarify:
The phrase is there -because- I know it's ambiguous. IOW, it's there because trololo. There's always someone who takes meaning far too seriously.

Back on topic, I keep on getting to the point where I have 3 pips of piety, am at DL6, and get trapped and killed by either an orc warrior or an ogre due to insufficient Invocations to pacify them and having no source of teleport/blink (I usually have already used my few scrolls of teleport by then on escaping from uniques I encounter on earlier dungeon levels (DL2 and onwards -- Terence and Jessica are particularly common candidates, and much of the time he has a polearm so even more keeping-away is prescribed), I rarely get scrolls of blink, wands of teleport, or even cursed teleport rings.).
I have a few avenues to pursue:

* I've only recently realized that heavier armour is overall effective for healers. I could look into heavier armours in the hopes that I could tank some of the hits from earlier uniques instead of having to teleport, and conserve teleport scrolls that way.
* Dive much faster, try to find some equipment that will give me more of an advantage. Tricky to do as a healer but worth a few tries.

The best way for a healer to deal with uniques is to just walk away. Not many of them are faster than speed 10.

Since Wand of Polymorph, 30 or so turns ago.

@crate : that's a good point. I think my inclination to explore the dungeon was getting in the way of me seeing that I should just find the nearest stairs when something beyond my abilities appears, and come back elsewhere.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Keeping your advice in mind, crate, I've managed to reach Inv10 / CL7. Going to try to keep going with Invocations as far as I can in the main branch and go for either Fighting or Armour. Ironically, this run, I haven't even found any Teleport scrolls, let alone needed to use them.

Edit: Aaand... Dead again. Even though I immediately retreated when I encountered an orc warrior, I got unlucky (the stairs I went up were part of a set of 2 next to each other, and I managed to pick the other one in the set to go down. With him tailing me and occasionally bashing me, I started quaffing potions madly. But he wiped me out before i got to that un-ided potion of speed. Should've just wandered around on the higher levels a bit to give the OW time to go away. Or actually used Greater Healing. Maybe even on him?)
It is a high score, though -- 1152, which is almost twice the nearest MfHe score I have(584). NEEEXT TIME.

I'm pretty terrible at remembering to ID stuff, but note that you have 4 ID scrolls next to your stash of unknown potions. At the start of the game, potions are basically what ID scrolls are for.

Wow, yes, that would have been smart :). That's one of the most challenging aspects of Crawl for me -- remembering to keep up with the current status of everything, instead of just getting stuck into whatever's happening right now.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

My latest run has been a good one -- about double the previous high score.
I found Sigmund on DL2, came back later, froggified and then pacified him, and collected his excellent scythe of Venom (probably +0,+3 at the time). This made things SO much easier, being able to poison from a distance. Especially if there's deep water around.
Was careful to train Fighting a bit once I reached Invocations=9, which I suspect made things much easier.
Ran around and cleaned up various uniques and two ghosts, but still died a silly death.. I thought I'd easily pacify all the orc priests since I'd been pacifying them readily enough before.. but nooo. I'd just picked up that artifact short sword and was looking at it and the scythe like "YES! YES! Mwahahahaaa! .. NUUU."

I hardly had any excuse, either. Teleportation, healing, polymorph, and fear were all available, and running into the open like I did initially was just silly.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Why would you raise fighting and not polearms? If you're attacking a non trivial amount, it definitely makes more sense to raise weapon skill over fighting.

Now as to if you need to raise weapon skill at all on a healer, I'll leave that to those that have played and won them.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

For the record, Sigmund's scythe is not a good weapon. You should not attempt to hit things with it, even if it seems to have an appealing brand.

Given the choice when playing a healer, in the early game I'd use a fast weapon with electrocution, distortion, or venom if one turns up. It does not need a favorable aptitude; a short blade or whip of electrocution will be adequate even with 0 skill until you can make it to Lair, at which point you've won the game. I usually start skilling up my desired weapon class sometime in Lair, while still using my temporary weapon when I think I need to ensure I get a chunk.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Why would you raise fighting and not polearms? If you're attacking a non trivial amount, it definitely makes more sense to raise weapon skill over fighting.

Basically because I thought all the winning healers I've seen have some Fighting skill and some dodging skill (this is not actually the case!)
Although you have a point in the sense that Polearms should come before Fighting, looking for example at crate's winning HOHe here.. he starts by training both Axes and Invocations (probably the latter being focused); around CL9 he adds Armour and Evocations, then adds Fighting at CL11 and T+D at CL22. Makes sense overall. It's interesting how str is high and dex is low; by the wiki's account, dex is much more useful generally. No doubt there's a good reason for that choice.. probably being able to wear heavy armour.

Sigmund's scythe is not a good weapon

Why do you say that? (I was hitting for more damage, more reliably, leaving aside the whole poisoning thing, than my previous best option.)

My preference was for a short blade with venom until I realised how useful polearms' "reach" could be for a pacifying character (pacify neighbours of a powerful enemy, use 'reach' to attack safely while they distract it. Even better, reach over or from deep water). I haven't found any electrocution weapons yet*. I could consider a distortion weapon, if I have something reducing hunger; as it is I struggle with getting enough chunks.

* Given that I'm playing a Merfolk character, I'm unsure whether it's suitable for a main weapon, as I naturally want to exploit the advantages I get from fighting in water whenever possible. It does seem extremely useful in the early game per the wiki, though.

Aha.

In other news, my latest MfHe strolled into a vault on DL3 and...

The
Fuck.

I'm rather concerned that if I start wading into them, the occasional one will wade into me. It just seems too good to be true for a low-level Ely worshipper. Only better thing would be if they were polearms I could use.

I also noticed that the amount of items that were reported is less than the apparent on-screen number.. so, even more suspicious. Mimic vault?

I found another post on r/roguelikes that suggests this is related to Crazy Yiuf. I'm pretty much used to seeing him in a nature-themed vault with a modest collection of hammers. Huh.

Currently I'm trying to figure out how to take care of the remaining orc warriors. I haven't been able to pacify them so I ended up poisoning them. That way used up too many potions of Heal Wounds, though. Ideally I could find a hobgoblin or something similar to stand in the way while I reach-attack them.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Yeah :)

Previous character (and several iterations after that) have died now. I just haven't figured out a way to deal with Orc Warriors. I can't pacify them with any reliability, it's rare that I get the chance to trap them in a corridor behind a weak monster, they have too much armour for me to do enough damage that I don't get killed in the meantime, and I don't have enough AC that I can just shrug their hits off. I rarely actually die to them, rather, they appear in a cluster of orcs and make it impossible to just pick off orcs one by one; I run away downstairs, usually into another pack of orcs or something nastier, get trapped, and die.

I also usually have trouble with killer bees (because they usually manage to show up in a context where I don't have a spare turn to pacify them), ogres, and giants. Hopefully the two wands of disintegration I got can help with the latter, and in this iteration I was lucky enough to get Poison resistance early, so bees aren't so horrifying.

I should probably get to identifying those rings, scrolls, and potions; maybe I can get a full suite of basic resists if I'm lucky.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Melee brutes like orc warriors, ogres, and hill giants you run away from. They are exactly as fast as you. If they appear as early as normal, the first few will take all day to pacify if you bother trying and they will mash you to a pulp if you attempt to fight them. You need to descend carefully, picking off animals with pacification whenever you see them and hitting whatever other soft targets of opportunity come up. You are not trying to clear levels. You are trying to find Lair, which will give you whatever xp you need to pick up a weapon skill or other way of dealing with hard-to-pacify targets.

Now, obviously you do get some loot in the process, and if you can actually kill off one of these hard-to-pacify targets you'll get a decent xp bump that will make further exploration a little easier. Wands should be used, not hoarded, and blowguns full of poison needles can take down lone melee brutes fairly well if you start showering them at extreme range and start running just before they reach you. Generally the poison will finish them off, and otherwise you run back upstairs and try again from another stairwell.

Killer bees are nasty if they get to you, but they're animals with low hit point values, so they're extremely vulnerable to pacification. It's a judgment call whether you dive for a nearby corridor or just start pacifying them, but once a couple have succumbed they'll start fighting the hostile ones, buying a couple more turns to heal yourself or continue pacifying bees. Remember that you have one panic button that cures status effects and two more that heal your hit points; you should be using them. You also have an invincibility invocation that always works, although it's more expensive up-front than the other options. If you're trying to get full piety before Lair, you're doing it wrong. Piety is for spending on abilities, and you have all the abilities you care about at ***, where you get Greater Healing.

I take your point and have started diving and IDing much more aggressively (and running away a lot more)

Now, obviously you do get some loot in the process, and if you can actually kill off one of these hard-to-pacify targets you'll get a decent xp bump that will make further exploration a little easier. Excellent point.

You also have an invincibility invocation that always works

Do you mean Divine Protection? Plenty of times I've invoked that and immediately died. Does it take a turn to kick in?

, although it's more expensive up-front than the other options.

... No, clearly you don't (Divine Protection's cost is listed as 'free', though of course there is the penalty if you kill anything during that time)
If you're trying to get full piety before Lair, you're doing it wrong. Piety is for spending on abilities, and you have all the abilities you care about at ***, where you get Greater Healing.

I probably am being too conservative about -spending- piety. Not really actively trying to get it though, just trying to get to a state (experience, equipment, ID) where I am relatively immune to sudden-death before Lair.

Divine Protection's cost is listed as 'free'
It's 'free' to set up. It costs a lot of piety if it actually kicks in. The chance it kicks in is dependent on your piety. Unless you are very high on piety, it's basically a gamble that costs nothing but a turn to set up.

I probably am being too conservative about -spending- piety. Not really actively trying to get it though
That sounds... doubly wrong.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Divine protection is guaranteed if you have enough piety (high-5* range). If Ely saves your life with guaranteed protection it is a huge piety cost. At lower piety it is not guaranteed (and doesn't cost nearly as much piety if Ely saves you), but still much more likely than any other divine lifesaving.

Anyway if you get to lair with a healer you basically have won the game, since nothing in lair except some uniques is remotely difficult to pacify, and you can get to 6* piety very easily. Your goal should be just to get to lair, then do whatever you like afterward.

Ah so that's what KoboldLord meant about the cost.
So far I only manage to achieve 3 stars on my better iterations.

Believe me, I get that. In fact, that quote of yours in Henzell was what originally inspired me to create this build.
I still haven't actually gotten there. I haven't even seen the entrance to Lair once yet with this build. I'm close; lowest I've managed is DL8. I
I'll take your post as implying I should try diving really aggressively and will probably get much further than I expected.

You shouldn't dive just to dive (this will not get you a good winrate), but if you for instance run into an orc warrior, don't fight it, you don't need the xp. If it is causing you problems when you try to avoid it, then you can just go down to the next floor.

It's more a situation where I meet an orc warrior and friends, go down the stairs and immediately meet an orc warrior and friends. Maybe I just need to get better at finding the nearest stairs with minimum damage.

When things look that bad, pacify with Greater Healing. It's better to run away and find stairs but if you're stuck in a corner then burn Greater Healing.

Incidentally I'm puzzled why you're gunning for MfHe instead of HOHe or DDHe.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Now you may get why I said I'm being too conservative in using piety: I haven't used Greater Healing once yet. From everything people are saying, it seems I need to start using almost everything earlier (run earlier, heal earlier and more aggressively, use wands, scrolls, and even potions in some cases earlier)

Why not HOHe or DDHe? Nothing terribly complicated: Aptitudes seem OK, and it's been won, but it's not common, unlike HOHe and DDHe.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

HOHe is a lot easier. Extra HP, faster leveling, much better Invocations aptitude (the one skill a Healer needs), bonus to pacify orcs, saprovore (making food management easier), and better Armour aptitude (seriously, you should be wearing the heaviest thing you can find).

It's a much easier way to get familiar with how Healers work than most other races.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

I would seriously not recommend DDHe unless you want to do a pacifist run, aim for a record speedrun, or already know how it works and you actually find it fun. It is not good for learning imo, and additionally I think it's not very fun (and I love healers).

MfHe is fine, it's definitely harder than HOHe but then so is basically every combo in the game that isn't DDHe. Armour apt doesn't mean anything until post-lair for healers (you won't train armour skill until then anyway), and you are just fine not wearing heavy armour in the first place (I won a 26k turn HeHe recently that wore leather, my defenses were not great but they were not bad at all for a 26k turn healer either). Dodging MfHe with spells sounds perfectly fine.

I've finally reached Lair!

(oh, and 4th piety level. I didn't even notice until now.)

The gloves of +3 dexterity helped me hugely -- and then I found a +4 dex ring as well. I could actually hit things reliably!
For a change, I could wipe out stray orc wizard in 6 or so turns, instead of missing half the time :)
Currently wearing semi-heavy armor for its MR. Still looking for convenient rPois (which IMO is much better on a cloak; the armor I have it on is not worth swapping for the extra AC and MR). Thanks to your advice crate, I'll be looking to start training Dodging and Spellcasting as soon as I can (once I've gotten through Lair, if I understand correctly; best use of Lair exp is on Invocations and main weapon[Polearm], right?).

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Usually on my healers I train absolutely nothing but invocations until I get to 20 invo. Then you can do whatever you like afterward.

For this message the author crate has received thanks:

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

Thanks, I'd actually gotten most of the way through Lair by the time I read your message but I've switched now. Probably don't need my current L11 in polearms, but only need 1.3 levels in invocations to achieve L20. Just got a spear of freezing so I should be able to get those levels in the Mines.

Maybe I'll try another character training purely invocations til L20. In previous iterations of this character, I tried it, and I was too pathetic in melee when it mattered, but my strategy has clearly improved since then.

EDIT: Yet another avoidable death (fortunately, I wouldn't call this one stupid, just ignorant). I was unaware there were orc archer 'forts' in Orc:4 and walked directly up to one. A couple of centaurs showed up there and started harassing me with arrows, I thought 'no problem, these guys are pacifiable by now. Then everyone else showed up and started shooting at me too. I should have immediately read a scroll of teleport. As it was, I ran away a bit(getting shot all the while), used Greater healing, read a scroll of teleport. Just before the scroll kicks in, I invoke Divine Protection a giant eyeball paralyzes me.. as I teleport into the middle of a group of three war dogs and Grum. I got protected twice during my paralysis which dropped me from max piety to 4 stars, then Elyvilon missed a catch and I died.

Re: (CIP) Lojbanic MfHe

I've been lucky this time round.. at XL8 having 19 AC (part being +5 from a trident of protection) and boots of stealth.
Except for food. Food has been more 'hellish'. I've just recovered from a bout with starvation, still have no permafood. As a consequence got into penance by accidentally killing a invisible neutral orc wizard as I escaped an orc warrior in desperate search of anything resembling food. Used to have a lot more heal wounds/curing potions but quaffed all but one of my potions in an effort to stave off starvation.

Looking at the dump, it seems this level I just entered contains lair, I should be there. But apparently, CTRL+F lair or visual inspection indicates that I actually haven't seen the Lair entrance yet. Interesting.

Lair: D:8-13

This means you've reached the range of the dungeon where Lair can appear. When you've found the entrance, that will change to D:9, or whatever level the entrance is actually on.

For this message the author BlackSheep has received thanks:
