Having my best Spriggan Assassin run yet. I'm wondering though:

Skills:
- Which skills should I focus on most? I've got:
* Level 12.4 Fighting
- Level 7.2 Short Blades
- Level 13.0 Throwing
+ Level 16.7 Dodging
- Level 9.0 Stealth
- Level 13.8 Stabbing
- Level 12.2 Evocations

- Related to that, I just found a manual of stabbing, but stabbings already almost at 14, that's enough to one-shot anything anyway, isn't it?
- Do higher levels of stabbing give a chance of stabbing in normal melee?

Missile weapons
Poison needles are starting to lose their effectiveness and I don't yet have paralysis / sleeping needles. What's better for softening things up at range, hand axe of returning (I got two +3,+2 ones in a bailey), or steel darts?

Equipment
Not really needing advice as much as wanting to brag.:
- Trog's very first gift to me was a +6,+8 quick blade!
- Then on Lair 8 I find the +1,+6 quick blade of Fykoqis {elec, str +3 dex-3}. I did NOT know you could have a QB of electrocution, that is massive.
- I use-ID'd a scroll of acquirement, chose armour and got the +0 Robe of Midsummer (rF++ rC+ MR Str-1)
- and a +2,+5 ring of slaying is helping out too.
- Weirdly, I still have not found any other blowguns other than the one I started with. A blowgun of velocity or evasion would be pretty sweet.

This is probably a character that any decent player could trivially win with. I'm sure I'll get overconfident somewhere and get myself killed.

Oh and I actually have one more scroll of acquirement, any suggestions how to use it? Obviously not on weapons, I know, I'm thinking either gold or armour. Maybe I should save it in case I find something really good in a shop.

Re: SpAs of Trog needs gear, skill advice

Higher levels of stabbing don't allow you to stab in normal melee, no. 13.8 probably won't let you one-shot the highest HP baddies, though, so I wouldn't consider the manual a waste.

If your goal is to be a needle stabber, you're going to want to max out Throwing. Before that, you should probably bring Short Blades up to 8 so that your QB is at min. delay. I'd raise Stealth a bit higher too, and pick up Traps at some point too.

You don't mention Shields skill, but you're sporting a buckler. Make sure you train that enough to bring down the penalty.

Your hand axe will do a lot more damage than any kind of dart.

Why carry around potions of berserk rage while worshiping Trog?

EDIT: Troglodytes have the nice ability to get a guaranteed rod by acquiring Staves. You've already got more Evocations than you should have, so maybe roll the dice one? Otherwise, I'd go for a wand hoping for Healing

Re: SpAs of Trog needs gear, skill advice

Thanks for the tips.

Potions of berserk: Duh. I just haven't thought of dropping them yet.

Here's an interesting twist: I just got, for 200 gold in Orc:4, a +7,+4 randart sabre of distortion with +Blink rElec rN+. Wielding that would obviously preclude using my needles too much, but distortion is a cool brand, it's got nice resists, and my throwing skill is not wasted with those hand axes. Would you consider that approach? It has a certain charm of simplicity.

Orc:4 also had:
randart amulet of Clarity with Stlth++
ring of invisibility
amulet of faith

Would you consider an amulet of faith at this point? That would let me spam BiA a bit more, but I've had as much BiA as I really need anyway.

Why would you consider swapping away from a quickblade of electrocution? That is the best weapon you could hope for as far as a shortblades user under trog goes, except maybe for qblade of chaos.

You should buy the ring of invisibility and invisibility stab things and enjoy your win.

Re: SpAs of Trog needs gear, skill advice

For a trog character I would not want a qblade of distortion. Distortion is not really a brand you want to use against everything (unless you can stab everything), but with Trog you don't have much choice but to use it and you can't really stab everything as a sp of trog (invis ring will use too much food if you use it against every enemy group).

I'd only pick up the amulet of faith if you want to switch gods for some reason. Crate's right about invis-stabbing. It trivializes huge swaths of the game.

I'd also not consider a weapon of distortion unless I got stuck with one after wield-IDing or it was getting late and I hadn't found a dagger/qb of elec. (Not quite sure about chaos either, though at least you could unwield it freely.)

Re: SpAs of Trog needs gear, skill advice

Thanks again. Yeah, I actually wield-id'd that sabre of electrocution, so I actually used it to clear Orc. It worked very well, and it rounds out my resistances nicely, but it did make my needles somewhat pointless. When I cleared Orc:4 though I took the chance of unwielding it, fortunately I just got the space warping damage and was not banished, though I probably would have fared okay in the abyss with this character.

Distortion actually saved my butt vs Nessos on Orc:4 (along with BiA). Nessos was kicking my ass, and then suddenly - poof - devoured by a tear in reality. An attack that has a chance of irresistibly annihilating any opponent in a single shot is pretty nice.

All I need now is an evokable source of blink since I have the cTele mutation.

That's great until you run into Nessos in the Abyss while rune hunting. :)

Re: SpAs of Trog needs gear, skill advice

Eventually you will need to max throwing and stealth. Stabbing you can just use the book as you level the other stuff. Put maybe 20% or so in it as you work stealth. Be careful in vaults though. A lucky hit by a stone giant will ruin your day.

Just found a manual of dodging. +4+4 aptitude on a skill I definitely want to max, nice! Should help prevent that unlucky hit by a stone giant.

+Blink on a distortion sabre, while having control teleport mutation and while worshipping Trog, seems pretty nice to me. Can someone post some numbers on how much damage you are giving up with the sabre?

They also get guaranteed manuals when acquiring Books.
